Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 MESSAGE FROM SAM ROSSI It was a good time for Mike Koen to ask me to write an article since, in talking with many of you, I have been told there are times when our members have become uncomfortable when playing golf. As many of you know, I say what I mean and mean what I say. I am kind of a thickskinned person, and for the cause I will get involved totally. The issue is conduct on the course, especially cursing, throwing clubs, bending clubs and damaging the golf course. Many have approached me stating they don't want to play with certain members because of their conduct. I understand and appreciate their position, and I am requesting everyone to read this and if it applies to you and your behavior, please try to use less cursing. And there is NO REASON to throw a club, bend a club or destroy the golf course. SBRMGA has a code of conduct, if this applies to you, you need to read it. Robson has rules about damaging the golf course. BUT the most important penalty for me would be that no one in the Men s Club would want to play golf with me if I behaved in any of the ways discussed above. I urge us all to take this seriously and Let s Play Golf!!! SAM ROSSI 2
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 HITTING A DRAW Many golfers strive to hit a draw shot with the driver. For a righthanded player, this means the ball curves moderately from right to left. The draw is the preferred shot off the tee, because it adds distance to your drives. Learning to hit a controlled draw off the tee also helps you have a better chance of hitting the fairway on right-to-left dogleg holes. Employ a Strong Grip If you look down at your hands when you grip the club, you will notice the index finger and thumb of each hand have formed a rough V shape. Turn the V s a bit to the right and you have what instructors call a strong grip. This grip makes it easier for you to curve the ball from right to left. Experiment with just how far you want to turn your hands to create the gentle draw you are looking for and not cause a snap hook that goes too far left of target. Aim Your Feet Right of Target At address, align your feet and shoulders so they are pointed to the right of your intended target. Aim the club face directly at your target a closed club face position. The ball should start out going to the right, and then turn back left so it ends up exactly on target. Some golfers believe it is easier to hit a draw if they drop the right shoulder slightly at address, creating more of an upward shoulder angle. 3
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 Make a More Rounded Swing Draw an imaginary line that shows where your shoulders and feet are pointing at address. On the take away, the club moves inside this line. Coming at the ball from an inside position promotes the right-to-left ball flight. Don t pick the club up. Take it back low. Imagine your swing with the driver to be more rounded or less upright than you would use with your iron shots. Visualize the Correct Club Position In his book My Golden Lessons, Jack Nicklaus says it helps to have a mental image of the toe of the club moving ahead of the heel through the impact zone and moving farther ahead as the followthrough continues. This is the slightly closed club head position you need to execute a draw. The Forearm Roll When hitting a draw, as you near the impact zone, the left forearm rotates or rolls under. The rotation closes the club face and creates the right-to-left flight path of the ball. In Breaking 100, 90, 80, instructor Janet Coles suggests wearing a wristwatch with the face turned to the inside of your left wrist. If you rotate your left forearm properly through impact, the watch face will be visible on your follow-through. Make sure your grip pressure is not too tight. You want your hands to release through the ball. If they don t, the ball may start out going to the right and keep going right. 4
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 PLAY DURING OVERSEEDING During the time when the RANCH GOLF COURSE was closed, due to overseeding, our weekly events Chairmen Harley Schlachter, went above and behind to arrange play at two of the outstanding golf courses in the area. Both StarrPass and Ventana Canyon are both extremely attractive, challenging and are in great condition. When you see Harley give him an atta boy, shake his hand and let him know how much we appreciate the work he does for the weekly events and the special arrangements he made for these offsite events. Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT GOLF BALL I recently came across an interesting golf tip. It was created by the well known golf instructor Hank Haney. He does mention a particular golf ball but setting that aside I think you will find his perspective interesting. My intention is also not to promote Hank Haney but just to pass on this interesting tip From Hank Haney Boy, have golf balls gotten complicated. There used to be two basic choices the soft, high-spin balls played by pros and low-handicappers, and the rock-hard distance balls preferred by less-skilled golfers. Today, there are endless variations that account for a golfer s swing speed, launch angle and numerous other factors. So, how do you know which ball is the best fit for your game? I ll explain in today s free video tip (below). One thing all modern golf balls have in common they all go a long, long way. Now let s make sure you get the most for your equipment dollars: How to pick the right golf ball -Hank Haney 6
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 ADOPT-A-HOLE With the golf course on schedule to open early this week following over seeding, it s time to once again resume the Adopt-A-Hole duties. All golfers, residents, and the golf staff appreciate your efforts. I would like to invite any new/current residents to join the program as well. You don t have to be a golfer to participate. If you are unfamiliar with Adopt-A-Hole I will explain. You choose and/or are assigned a hole (we try to spread the manpower around to cover all holes) to care for. Care includes using the provided sand to fill fairway/teeing area divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. Additionally, if you want you can police the teeing area by picking up paper, broken tees, etc. and discarding. The frequency is up to you. Ideally you would cover your hole weekly. If that doesn t work make your own schedule that is convenient for you. Some holes have more than one assignee which is the ideal situation. For new participants, I would be happy to explain how to properly fix ball marks and fill in divots. As an aside, Robson golf management provides an annual hospitality event for all participants to show their appreciation for our efforts in keeping the course looking its best. For current participants please respond to (paul.lap@live.com) to let me know if you are still participating and which hole you care for. I have a spread sheet and would like to update and keep current. Thanking everyone in advance and looking forward to seeing you this fall! Kind Regards, Paul Lapotosky 7
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Oct 2016 GOLF HUMOR One beautiful fall Sunday afternoon, a man staggers into an emergency room with two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor and nurses run up to him and ask what happened. "Well, I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife. She was teeing off on the last hole when she sliced her ball into a pasture full of cows. She's afraid of the beasts, so I went to look for it," the battered man explained. Meanwhile, the emergency room was becoming busy, and the doctor was growing impatient. The man continued, While I was rooting around, I noticed that one of the cows had something white in its tail. And I carefully walked over and examined it up close. Sure enough, there was my wife's golf ball, stuck right in the middle of the cow's butt." The harried doctor, now losing his patience, says, So? I don't understand what this has to do with the nature of your injuries. The man continued, That's when I made my mistake. I pointed to the cow's posterior and yelled to my wife, 'Hey,this looks like yours!' 8
