Friday 6 th October 2017 Barfield News Website: www.barfieldschool.com Email: admin@barfieldschool.com I was well and truly astounded by the standard of entries this week. We had triple layer mini Victoria sponges (Ava), intricate chocolate lattice work (Lucy), cupcakes in the style of perfect miniature hamburgers (Jasmine), fresh fruit used in cakes and for toppings (Ines), delicate pastry work (Phoebe and Izzy) and many light and superbly presented cup cakes (James and Sacha). The judges were reluctant to tuck in and ruin all the hard work the children had obviously put into the creations, but they had the best Break time ever, tasting and scoring them!! After much deliberation the scores were added up and the winner, by one point, was Lucy Sproule, who made three amazingly professional sponge medallions which were iced and decorated with fresh fruit and surrounded by a lattice chocolate wall. A huge well done to Ines for her second placement and to all those who took part. A spectacular array of treats! Good luck to those taking part in Year 5 whose qualifying rounds are taking place on the 9 th and 16 th October. I am sure your entries will be just as professional. Barfield Reception Classes of 2017 Please note that these Reception photographs will appear in the Herald Reception Class feature which will be published on 12 th October.
2017 IAPS HEADS' CONFERENCE I spent a very pleasant three days last week at the Annual Conference of IAPS Heads, which this year was held at the International Conference Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland. An excellent blend of speakers and seminars had been arranged, and across the event we heard about, and were able to discuss, the latest thinking and trends in education. We also received important information relating to matters such as inspections, legal updates and how The Independent Schools Council is working with the various political parties to understand fully their views on Independent Education. While the timetable for each day was full, there were still opportunities for Heads to chat informally with each other and to enjoy the Annual Conference Dinner in the impressive surroundings of The National Museum Of Scotland. I travelled by train via the East Coast Line and the return journey afforded me the opportunity to look out from the Northumberland coast across the sea to catch a glimpse of Lindisfarne - The Holy Island, not the rock band from the 1960s / 1970s! The scenery as one drives down the M4 motorway next year to Celtic Manor may not be quite as stunning, but the venue and its surroundings should provide adequate compensation, and I am sure that it will be another beneficial Conference. You've heard of graffiti in the general sense of the word. It's the scribble of lines you see on some walls. Often, you find yourself staring at the outrageous design to figure out what it says, but to no avail and you end up walking away. This form of public art has been around for centuries - in fact Anya was right when she spotted that it played a large part in the caveman era. Today, graffiti is seen as an eyesore and as defacement of property. I got the girls to talk about graffiti for its artistic beauty and then they created wonderful pictures and individual designs to express themselves. We do, of course, promote the 'do not try this at home' line of thought and expect the children to keep this style of art limited to paper! Settling into term has been fun for everyone, but there has also been a great deal of commitment to learning and a need to adopt a resilient work ethic. Many of the children are revelling in successful marks, proud moments and good grades, while some are experiencing disappointments, frustrations and are determined to better their achievements. I asked a few children to think about how they are feeling towards school and their quotes included the words: 'happy', 'it's hard work', 'active', 'sometimes worried', 'tired', 'lots to organise' and 'brilliant'! They then helped me to find posters to which they could relate in some way. Above are a few that made them stop and think. STAFF NEWS You may recall that, a couple of years ago, Mrs Milton had a shoulder operation. Unfortunately she has had to return to hospital for further treatment and she will be absent from school until after halfterm. I am sure that you would like to join with me in wishing her a speedy recovery and a swift return.
Year 3 Step Back In Time On Tuesday 26th September, Year 3 spent the day at Buster Ancient Farm. The children are currently learning about The Stone Age in their History lessons and the trip gave them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the topic and find out what life was really like during that time. They made clay pots, created chalk carvings and built wattle fences and were able to explore Stone Age longhouses. They even had the chance to take part in some archaeology, carefully digging to uncover precious artefacts. We were extremely lucky with the weather as it was sunny all day and we all had a fantastic time! Alex Bouckley OLD BARFIELDIAN NEWS We are delighted to pass on the news that Seth Thomas has been appointed 1st XI Hockey Captain at Monkton Combe School. James Reid
MATCH ROUND UP Wednesday 4 th October Football v Lyndhurst U11 (H) Barfield A 4 0 Lyndhurst A Blake-Pead, Aydin (2), Littlefield Barfield B 7 0 Lyndhurst B Slatford (2), Brown, Heaton (2), Birkbeck (2) Barfield A/B 4 1 Lyndhurst A Littlefield, Slatford, Blake-Pead (2) Barfield C 5 0 Lyndhurst C Henman (2), Gurung (2), Howells All of our Year 6 and Year 5 boys took part in this excellent afternoon of football. All of our teams demonstrated the skills and tactics that Mr Taylor and I have been working on with them in Games and, as a result, produced a pleasing set of results. Our forward play and finishing was particularly good with 9 different players scoring goals throughout the afternoon. However, the Man of the Match award goes to Jerome Sturridge who, although he didn t score any goals, was responsible for stopping the opposition scoring on many occasions and worked tirelessly all afternoon to win back possession of the football. Well done to all involved. Steve Hollands Boys Challenge Training Match v Lyndhurst U9 (H) All boys from Year 4 and Year 3 were divided into 4 separate teams, while Lyndhurst brought a group of 10 boys and girls to take part in this event. After dividing their children into our teams, different coloured bibs were issued and we began with 2 games of 7-a-side football. The children then participated in a timed log race challenge carrying the Barfield Log the length of the main field and then back again to the start line - a distance of 200metres. We then finished with all the children having a game of Aeroball followed by a command task. A great afternoon was had by all. Netball v Lyndhurst U11 (H) Barfield 12 3 Lyndhurst Barfield played well from the start, maintaining possession and getting the ball quickly to the shooting circle. The shooters, Ava Rice, Sacha Mullins and Lucy Sproule, worked extremely well together and demonstrated excellent accuracy when shooting, giving us a 9-2 lead at half-time. Although Lyndhurst picked up in the second half, the Barfield girls continued to work efficiently as a team, moving well, with the defence making it difficult for Lyndhurst to score. Well done girls for a great performance and congratulations to Lucy Sproule for being chosen as Player of the Match. Ray Taylor Alex Bouckley N.B. Wednesday saw the first outing for our new boys and girls match kits and so far the new kits have a 100% success record! Ed.
Football Tournament at Alton Convent U9 MATCH ROUND UP (continued) Thursday 5 th October The boys and Gabriella Bailey played well in all matches. Unfortunately Oliver Metcalfe, our goalkeeper, sustained an injury in our second match and had to come off for treatment mid-way through the game. The opposition was able to take full advantage of his absence and scored these goals in fairly quick succession. After some tlc, Oliver returned to the pitch and we were able to secure a draw and a victory in our last 2 matches. The following results were achieved: Barfield A 0 Barfield A 1 Barfield A 0 Barfield A 0 1 Alton Convent A 0 Alton Convent B 0 Sherborne A 3 Sherfield A Ray Taylor Well done Evie!
