BRIAN KING President The Cabrillo College Men s Basketball Team begins the 2007-2008 season as defending Coast Conference South Champions. The championship last year was the first in Cabrillo s history, but will not be the last for a program on the rise. Coach Tony Marcopulos has lead the Seahawks to a winning record in each of the last five years with an emphasis on tough defense. Good defense is all about effort, and the young men who play for Coach Marcopulos play hard every game. I am very proud of our student athletes, many of whom will go on to study and play basketball at four-year colleges and universities. Go Seahawks! DALE MURRAY Director of Athletics Welcome to Cabrillo College Men s Basketball. The 2007-2008 schedule brings together some of the best basketball teams and players in Northern California. All of the athletes have combined academic and athletic talent to bring you a level of competition that exemplifies quality achievement under expert leadership. Enjoy the intensity of the competition and keep in mind that Cabrillo College encourages both the participants and spectators to conduct themselves in the true spirit of sportsmanship. 4

2007-2008 Season Preview: An Interview with Head Coach Tony Marcopulos What will it take for this team to defend the Coast Conference Championship you won last year for the first time in school history? Marcopulos: First, we are not defending anything. Last year was last year and this year is this year. No one can take away from what last years team accomplished. You only defend things that can be taken from you. Regarding this years team..it will be very interesting to see how our league shapes up. West Valley has some transitioning to do with a new staff. San Jose City is coming off a very poor year and everyone is anticipating they will bounce back strong. Gavilan has some good players returning. DeAnza as well. Hartnell has lost a lot of players as well as Monterey. We have the nucleus of our team back from last year but that means nothing if we don t work and prepare. Speaking of that nucleus from last year. You should be the odds on favorite to win the Conference with almost your entire team back that won a share of the Conference Championship. You have to feel good about your team going into the 2007-2008 season. Marcopulos: I do feel good about this team. They have worked extremely hard this summer. I believe that work will pay off for them in more ways that one. We have talked about and continue to talk about the importance of not taking each other for granted. To continue to get to know each other better on and off the court. I think experienced groups have a natural tendency to assume that they know each other and as a result maybe don t communicate with each other as often or as effectively as they could. Our efforts in this area are key in my opinion if we are to continue to grow as a team. Having the majority of the group back entitles us to nothing. There is a lot this group wants to accomplish and can accomplish, but they must do the work and stay together for that to happen the way they want it to. Last year you drastically changed the style of play from anything we had seen in the past. Will you continue to play the same way this year.? Marcopulos: Yes. The change was dramatic and was something very difficult to do especially when I had coached that way my entire career. Very scary to say the least. However, having said that, it was also fun to prepare myself for the change. It was the best decision for the players we had at the time and is the best style of play for this team as well. I d like to think that with a year under my belt of coaching this style I might have learned a few things about it. I feel like I did. I think our players did as well. I feel as if I m better able to teach some of the offensive and defensive concepts better. I better understand how our opponents might attack our pressure. In the end, it won t be about what I know or don t know. It will be about how well our players play together, how un selfish they are and how hard they play. 6

HEAD COACH TONY MARCOPULOS HEAD COACH 8th Season CSU Stanislaus B.A., 1987 University of the Pacific M.A.T., 1990 When Tony Marcopulos became Cabrillo s head coach on April 3, 2000, he envisioned a bright future for the Seahawk basketball program. His years of experience, first as a player and then as a NCAA Division 1 assistant coach had prepared him for the task ahead: Taking over a program that had been losing for the last two decades and turning it into a winner. Seven years later, the Cabrillo Basketball Program is thriving under Marcopulos direction. His teams are successful both on the court and in the classroom. Plus, many former Seahawks have continued their education and playing careers at 4-year schools. Coach Marcopulos knows the important role community colleges play in the development of young student-athletes. He also knows very well what Div. I programs across the country are looking for in a student-athlete. His experience, knowledge, passion and work ethic have made him an excellent addition to the Cabrillo College Athletic Department and an invaluable asset to the men that he coaches. AT CABRILLO 2006-2007 was a history making year. For the first time school history the Cabrillo College Men s Basketball program won the Coast Conference South Championship. Since Marcopulos arrival in 2000 the Seahawks have made the steady climb from what was one of the worst California Community College basketball programs in the state. For five consecutive seasons the Seahawks have won 14 or more games. For five consecutive seasons the Seahawks have been.500 or better. The Seahawks have been to the playoffs in five of the last seven years. Two of those five appearances have been to the Regional Finals. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Marcopulos was a full-time Division I Assistant Coach for 12 seasons (1988-2000). He began his coaching career at the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA), where he worked alongside Head Coach Bob Thomason for 11 seasons. Then, he joined the men's basketball staff at the University of Portland for the 1999-2000 season. Coach Marcopulos has first-hand experience in building a basketball program. When he joined Thomason in Stockton, UOP had enjoyed only one winning season during the previous nine years. That quickly changed. During the next eleven years Pacific had eight winning 8

TONY MARCOPULOS seasons. Those 11 seasons included many highlights; two separate 16 game winning streaks (1997-1998), the 1997 Big West conference championship, the 1998 Big West Western Division championship, the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in almost 20 years (1997), the school's first ever NIT tournament appearance (1998), and the second longest home court winning streak in the country behind Kansas at 32 in a row (1998). Pacific also boasted a 90% graduation rate over that same time period. After the 1998-1999 season Marcopulos left Pacific for a similar position at the University of Portland. Marcopulos joined Head Coach Rob Chavez s staff in August of 1999. The Pilots (a member of the WCC (West Coast Conference)) went 12-16 on the year. After nine months in Portland Marcopulos was hired as the new Head Coach at Cabrillo College in June of 2000. PLAYING CAREER Marcopulos is a native of the Bay Area and attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. As a point guard, he led the Dons to four league championships and a four-year record of 89-10. Upon graduating high school in 1982, Marcopulos went on to Columbia Junior College in Columbia, California (82-84) where he played for Bob Thomason and recorded seasons of 17-14 and 27-7. He then accepted a basketball scholarship to attend Carroll College in Helena, Montana (84-85) before following Coach Thomason to California State University, Stanislaus (Turlock, CA) (85-87) where he helped lead the team to a conference title and a Division III NCAA tournament berth in 1987. EDUCATION Marcopulos received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Stanislaus State University. He later earned a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching (Physical Education) and a secondary school teaching credential (Physical Education) from the University of the Pacific. A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Tony and his wife Stephanie live in Aptos with their daughter Emma. 9

What Division 1 Coaches Are Saying About Coach Marcopulos and Cabrillo Basketball Stan Morrison Athletic Director UC Riverside Bob Thomason Head Basketball Coach University of the Pacific Seth Greenberg Head Basketball Coach Virginia Tech University Jamie Dixon Head Basketball Coach University of Pittsburgh "The manner in which Coach Marcopulos has improved the program year after year at Cabrillo College does not surprise anyone who has ever known him as a coach and man. He has a plan and is willing to pay a great physical and emotional investment to see the plan through to a championship conclusion. I would have wanted my son to play for Tony Marcopulos. I cannot pay him a higher tribute." "Tony (Marcopulos) was a great asset to the University of the Pacific during his 11 years as my assistant (coach). He truly understands the game of basketball, but more importantly he understands the players. Tony is a great communicator which has helped him get the most out of each and every player. Tony is also a tremendous worker. He puts 100% into everything he does. Whether it is changing a flat tire in the rain or putting together a game plan to beat Georgetown, he is always working hard. Most importantly, Tony is a great person. He cares deeply about all his student-athletes and wants to see them succeed in basketball and in life. "Tony Marcopulos is the total package. He can teach, develop players, and is committed to their fulfilling their academic potential. He has the unique advantage of having what it takes to help his players play at the next level and has the expertise to help them achieve their goals." Tony (Marcopulos) has been around a successful team his entire career. He has taken programs to heights never before reached. Having known Tony since he started at Pacific, I look for the rise at Cabrillo College to continue. 10

Alan Major Asst. Basketball Coach Ohio State University Randy Bennett Head Basketball Coach Saint Mary's College Stew Morrill Head Basketball Coach Utah State University "It is not surprising that Tony Marcopulos is doing a such a great job at Cabrillo College. His time spent at Pacific was a great training ground for him to become a Head Coach. I'm sure that Cabrillo Basketball will continue to rise to another level." "Tony Marcopulos is a tireless worker. His work ethic and persistence as a Head Assistant in Division I have translated well as Head Coach. He is a rare commodity in this day and age, and I am excited to witness the progress of his committment at Cabrillo College." "I have known Tony Marcopulos for a long time and I have watched him grow as a person and a coach. He has always impressed me with the way he teaches his philosophy of the game of basketball. His players have always demonstrated a great deal of discipline on the court and in the classroom." Want a Cabrillo College Basketball T-Shirt? www.cabrillo.edu 11

A SSISTANT COACH BEN SANDERS ASSISTANT COACH 1st Season San Jose State University B.A., 2005 Ben Sanders enters his first season at Cabrillo College after spending the previous three seasons at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. Cabrillo Head Coach Tony Marcopulos says... "I am pleased to have Coach Sanders here. I had the opportunity to get to know Ben during his time at Pacific. When Ben approached me about the possibility I felt very comfortable about what he might be able to add to our program. Ben is a good person and someone that I know our players will like being around. What Coach Sander says I am excited to be a part of the Cabrillo family and work under Coach Marcopulos. I believe in Coach Marcopulos's philosophy; there are a lot of small details that add up to being successful. I think our style of play will be very entertaining to watch. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Sanders, was a graduate assistant with the San Jose State Spartans in 2003-2004 before moving up to full-time assistant for the 2004-2005 season. At SJSU, he coached under Phil Johnson (now an assistant at USC). He joined the men s basketball staff at the University of the Pacific in 2005. In his first season with the Tigers, Pacific won the league championship and went on to the NCAA tournament. Coach Sanders got his first coaching job from his former coach Phil Johnson. Phil was returning for his second stint as head coach of the Spartans, after spending three years as an assistant for the Chicago Bulls. Coach Sanders learned many defensive schemes, as Phil Johnson kept San Jose State competitive in the Western Athletic Conference. He spent two seasons as a member of the UOP coaching staff. In his second season, Sanders gained valuable experience in the post season for the first time. The Tigers at 24-8 for the season, lost in double OT to Boston College in the first round of the NCAA tournament. PLAYING EXPERIENCE After averaging 25ppg for Westchester in Los Angeles, Sanders received a full-scholarship to UNLV. While at UNLV, he spent two seasons red-shirting, before transferring to Fullerton Junior College. Sanders finished his playing career at San Jose State University. In his first season with the Spartans, the school had one of the best win to loss turnarounds in the country. EDUCATION Sanders received his undergraduate degree in Criminology from San Jose State University. 12

THE CABRILLO BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE Cabrillo head basketball coach Tony Marcopulos was hired to lead the Seahawk program on April 3, 2000. In the short time since, he has made significant progress in building a foundation for both present and future success. Prior to beginning his 7th season, he discussed his thoughts regarding Cabrillo College, his team, his program and just what can be expected: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COLLEGE? MARCOPULOS: The location of the campus and it s close proximity to the beach obviously stand out as tremendous assets to this college. Cabrillo, as an institution of higher education, is one of the truly outstanding community colleges in the state of California. We have instructors here that are committed to the growth and development of students. Lastly, Cabrillo is the kind of place where a student-athlete can get an outstanding two-year education at an affordable cost, play intercollegiate athletics and enjoy college social life in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. WHAT WILL YOU PROMISE A STUDENT-ATHLETE IF HE COMES TO CABRILLO? MARCOPULOS: What first comes to mind is what I will NOT promise. I will not ever promise a recruit playing time...ever. They are promised zero minutes. They will earn whatever amount of playing time they get. However, there are some things that I m willing to make promises about. First, I promise that they will go to class each and everyday. Although I can t guarantee that each player will graduate, I will say that only one player who completed all four semesters with us failed to graduate. In my eighteen years of collegiate coaching I have only coached four student-athletes who did not graduate who finished their eligibility. I promise they will attend and be in an atmosphere that will be conducive to attaining a degree. Second, I promise they will be a much better player when they leave Cabrillo than when they came. They will work harder on their game and be in better shape than they have ever been in their life. They will be coached everyday. Lastly, I promise they will be better people when they leave us than when they came. Not because they are hanging around me everyday, although I do intend to have a very positive impact on their life, but because I will surround them with teammates that are good people. It stands to reason that if you are surrounded with good people, people of character, then that will impact you in a positive way. Clearly, the opposite is true as well. Our teams are recruited based in large part on an individual s character. Go to class, get better, be a better person. Other than that, I don t make promises. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MARCOPULOS: Our commitment to the development of our players is easily our biggest strength. Student-athletes in this program will be challenged to excel in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. We make every effort to ensure that our players receive the best college basketball experience possible. WHERE DOES CABRILLO RATE AMONG COAST CONFERENCE CONTENDERS? MARCOPULOS: Our conference is one of the best in the state. The Coast Conference South is perennially advancing several teams deep into the post conference tournament championship. We will contend for the conference championship. Winning it and advancing to the State Championship is our only goal. 15

Season Recaps: The Marcopulos Era 2006-2007 SEASON For the first time in school history the Cabrillo College Men s Basketball team won the Coast Conference Championship. The Seahwaks finished the season with a 19-9 overall record and a 9-3 conference record. The 9-3 conference record earned the Seahawks a tie with Hartnell for a share of the Conference Championship. Aaron Patterson was named the Conference MVP and First Team All-State. Chris Sharp was named to the Second Team All-Conference with Aaron Pearson and Dom Dunham both earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. The Seahawks were seeded 9th in Northern California and traveled to West Hills College in Coalinga, CA for the first round playoff game. The Seahawks lost by two at the buzzer to end their history making season. 2005-2006 SEASON With an overall record of 14-14, Cabrillo finished the season with a record of.500 or better for the thirdstraight year. Despite late season injuries, the Seahawks finished the season strong, winning 9 of their last 14 games. With a record of 7-5 in the very competitive Coast Conference South, Cabrillo earned a 3rd-place finish behind only top-ranked West Valley College and #7 San Jose City College. A season-ending ankle injury to point guard Jeff Scott was a critical blow in the middle of conference play. The Seahawks, who were tied for first place at the time of his injury, were not able to maintain that same high level of play. Mike Scott, Jon Fontenberry, and Aaron Patterson each earned All-Conference recognition. Once again the Seahawks were one of the best defensive teams in the state, ranking 7th out of over 90 teams by allowing only 64.1 ppg. 2004-2005 SEASON One of the Cabrillo basketball program's best seasons in a long time ended with the Seahawks having earned 17 victories, the most wins under Head Coach Tony Marcopulos. Cabrillo's winning percentage has improved in each of the 5 seasons with Coach Marcopulos at the helm. For the 2nd time in 3 years the Cabrillo College Seahawks played their way into the Nor Cal Regional finals before losing to top-ranked and eventual undefeated state champion Fresno City College. The Seahawks finished the regular season ranked #10 in Northern California and 20th in the state. Cabrillo finished 3rd in the extremely competitive Coast Conference South. 2003-2004 SEASON For the first time in over a decade, the Seahawks finished the season with a winning record, 14 wins against 13 losses. However, budget cuts reduced the state tournament field from 64 participants statewide to only 32. The Seahawks would have been the 17th seed in Northern California and were therefore not included in the field. This was the first time in Marcopulos' tenure that his team did not made the play-offs. 2002-2003 SEASON The 2002-2003 season was a breakthrough season for the Seahawks. For the first time in California State tournament history, the 28th seed advanced to the Regional Final as the Seahawks scored upset wins over 5th-seed Feather River College and 12th-seed Skyline College. The Seahawks finished with an overall record of 15-18, the most Cabrillo wins since 1985. Their 62-55 win over San Jose City College was the first victory over that school since 1970. All four sophomores continued their education and basketball careers at four-year institutions. On the academic side, the team s year-end GPA was 3.1. 2001-2002 SEASON For the first time in school history the Seahawks made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. The 17 wins in the last two seasons are more wins than the previous 5 seasons combined. Myree Bowden, who was selected First team All-Conference, was the first Cabrillo player to earn such honors in over 15 years. Bowden also signed with the University of the Pacific, the first Cabrillo College player to sign a Division 1 scholarship in over 25 years. 2000-2001 SEASON In his first campaign as head coach of the Seahawks, Coach Marcopulos was able to lead Cabrillo into the playoffs for the first time since 1995. Cabrillo s eight wins equaled the total number of wins during the previous three seasons! 24
