Sophomore Shay Selby came off the bench against Marquette and played a season-high 15 minutes, while totaling nine points, three rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot. She also took her fi rst charge of the season as the Blue Devils won 74-43. She hit 4-of-6 fi eld goals and 1-of-3 from downtown in the contest. Through six games, Duke has been huge on the boards as the Blue Devils are averaging 47.5 rebounds a game and are outrebounding opponents by a 13.8 margin, which ranks second in the ACC. Duke has registered a total of 285 rebounds in those contests, which is the fi fth-highest total in school history. In 1984-85, Duke had 302 rebounds, 1985-86 and 1987-88 the Blue Devils had 291, in 2006-07 there was 289, in 2008-09 Duke had 288 boards through six games. What Is Next?... Duke will remain at home for a second consecutive home contest on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:00 p.m., against Southern California. The Blue Devils will then be off the next week for exam break before traveling to Palo Alto, Calif., to face secondranked Stanford on Dec. 15. Thomas Selected Naismith Candidate... Duke junior Jasmine Thomas has been named one of 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith National Player of the Year trophy. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2009-10 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Women s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. Cheek Nets Honor... Duke senior Joy Cheek has been named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classifi ed as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition. Cheek, who is a native of Charlotte, N.C., has been a very steady performer for the Blue Devils over her career as she has played in 101 games, while starting 40.
