BGSU WOMEN S BASKETBALL VS. EASTERN KENTUCKY NOV. 27, 2001 PAGE 3 HEAD COACH CURT MILLER Curt Miller is in his first season at the helm of the BGSU women s basketball team. Miller was named the seventh head coach in the program s history on May 8. Miller came to BGSU from Colorado State University, where he spent the past three years as associate head coach. During the 2000-01 season, Miller was listed as one of the top 10 assistant coaches in the country in an article in the Women s Basketball Journal, as voted by his peers. Miller, a native of Girard, Pa., has ties to Ohio and the MAC as well. He graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and spent a year as a graduate assistant, working with the women s basketball staff at Kent State University. Miller helped Colorado State to an overall record of 81-20 over the last three seasons. The Rams, guided by head coach Tom Collen, a 1977 BGSU graduate, finished with a 25-7 record in 2000-01. CSU won the Mountain West Conference Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney. The year prior, CSU qualified for the WNIT and advanced all the way to the final four of that tourney, losing to eventual champion Wisconsin. In 1998-99, Miller s first season in Fort Collins, CSU won the preseason WNIT title and the Western Athletic Conference championship. The Rams posted a 33-3 record, the best in school history, and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. That squad was ranked as high as fourth in the nation. Miller s responsibilities at Colorado State included serving as defensive coordinator. Additionally, Miller was the recruiting coordinator and scouting coordinator, and his responsibilities also have included academic counseling, scheduling, player development and administrative coordination. Prior to Colorado State, Miller spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse University (1994-98). The Orangewomen shared the Big East Conference championship in 1995-96. Miller was an assistant coach at Cleveland State University for three seasons, and was the youngest top assistant in the country upon his hiring in 1991. Prior to his stint with the Vikings, Miller served as a graduate assistant coach on Bob Lindsay s staff at Kent State University. The Golden Flashes finished 17-12 that season (1990-91), and KSU enjoyed the second-best turnaround in the nation, with a 12-game improvement over the previous year. In Miller s 10 years as recruiting coordinator, Colorado State, Syracuse and Cleveland State combined to sign all-state players from 17 states, Canada and South America. That list includes a Gatorade Player of the Year from the states of Maryland, New York and Connecticut. Miller received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and business administration from Baldwin-Wallace in 1990. He has taken courses toward his Master of Arts degree in sports administration at KSU. BGSU WOMEN S BASKETBALL VS. EASTERN KENTUCKY NOV. 27, 2001 PAGE 5 of the Gatorade Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Fla. SMITH STEPS UP Freshman Sakima Smith, a native of Detroit, came off the bench to post a solid game in her hometown... in just her second collegiate outing, Smith scored 13 points and added eight rebounds, including a game-high five at the offensive end of the court... Smith also had a blocked shot in her 26 minutes of work. LEWIS MAKES DEBUT The Falcons other freshman, Tene Lewis, saw the first playing time of her BG career at UDM... Lewis, a high-school teammate of Sakima Smith at Detroit CMA, did not play in either the exhibition game or the YSU contest... she provided a spark off the bench Tuesday, and had two points and a steal in eight minutes... Lewis had five points vs. Colorado, and made her first collegiate start in the Yale game. GRIECH S THIEVERY Junior Kim Griech hit double digits in scoring for the second consecutive game, with 13 points at Detroit, but she really showed her prowess at the defensive end of the floor... Griech had six steals, setting a career high, in the contest... that total is the most by a BGSU player in nearly two years, since Jaymee Wappes had six thefts vs. St. Bonaventure (Nov. 22, 1999). EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS No, Bowling Green is not eligible for the Horizon League championship... but, the Falcons compete against five of the nine Horizon League (formerly the Midwestern Collegiate Conference) institutions this season... BGSU played its second opponent from the league in as many games, having opened the season with games at Youngstown State and Detroit... the Falcons also will face Butler, UW-Milwaukee and Wright State this year. GO WEST The 2001-02 season marks the final campaign for the Falcons as a member of the MAC s East Division... in October, the MAC welcomed the University of Central Florida as a member for the sport of football only, beginning in 2002... the league placed UCF in the East Division... BGSU is being moved to the West Division for all sports, beginning in the 2002-03 academic year. NICE DEFENSE The Falcons held Detroit to a field-goal percentage of just.303, after limiting Youngstown State to a.323 success rate in the season opener... last year, the Falcons held only one opponent to less than 35 percent shooting during the entire 29-game campaign... BG s defense held UDM to just seven baskets in 40 attempts (.175) in the first half of that game. TAKE CARE OF THE BALL Last season, the Falcons averaged 20.4 turnovers per game... but, BG had just 10 turnovers in the win at Youngstown, including only three in the first half... the Falcons 10 turnovers marks the team s lowest total in a game since Feb. 19, 2000 (committed nine in an 82-79 home win over Miami)... the Brown and Orange turned the ball over 13 times vs. Yale (Nov. 24), but only twice in the second half. FRANCINE MILLER ON PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM Senior Francine Miller has been named to the Preseason All-MAC Team for the second consecutive year... Miller, despite missing all of six games and parts of several others due to injuries last year, averaged 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals... she was an all-league second-team pick... the Preseason All-MAC Team also consisted of Ball State s Tamara Bowie, Western Michigan s Kristin Koetsier, Miami s Kim Lancaster and Eastern Michigan s Stephanie Smiley. 2001-02 BG MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION MILLER HONORED BY PEERS, TOO Late last season, the Cleveland Plain Dealer conducted a survey of team captains of each MAC women s basketball team, asking various questions about their peers in the league... Francine Miller topped two of the six categories... she was listed as the Best Finisher in the league... the article stated, if this player gets free in the open court, get out the camera... perhaps more importantly, Miller was the overwhelming winner in the category The Last Shot... the question read, With the game on the line, who in the MAC can take it and make it?... the article stated about Miller, Because she can get where she wants, when she wants and is a 3- point threat to boot, Miller s peers had no qualms about picking her as tops in the clutch. MILLER MOVING UP SCORING CHARTS Francine Miller looks to continue her move up the BGSU career scoring chart... with 1,105 career points, Miller is the MAC s active career scoring leader, and she ranks 13th in school history... she scored her 1,000th career point in a win over Marshall last Jan. 17 (as part of a school record-tying 35-point game)... in that game, she became just the fifth player in BGSU annals to reach 1,000 career points as a junior... Miller is ranked third all-time on the BGSU career scoring average list, with a points-per-game average of 13.81... her next target on the BGSU points list is 12th-place Andrea Nordmann (1,164 points; 1989-93).
