COLORADO AVALANCHE MTS Centre Sunday, October 6, : PM (CT) Game 8 (-5-) Home Game 5 (--) GAME PREVIEW The Winnipeg Jets (-5-) and Colorado Avalanche (--) renew their division rivalry on Sunday in the first matinee game of the season at MTS Centre. The Jets will wrap up their five-game homestand tomorrow afternoon having recorded a -- mark over this stretch. The Avalanche are on a one-game road trip to Winnipeg. The Jets had a record of -- versus the Avalanche in last year s season series. Jets leading scorer last season Blake Wheeler amassed (5G, 5A) of his 69 points last season against the Avalanche. TEAM NOTES Breaking the seal The Jets managed to convert a power play goal for the first time this season on Oct. versus Tampa Bay (- L). Winnipeg had been unable to score on their previous opportunities on the man advantage. Team goal leader Bryan Little converted the Jets first power play marker of the year during the third period versus the Lightning. This recent dry spell contrasts Winnipeg s start to the - season when the Jets scored a PPG in each of their first six games. Both the Buffalo Sabres and Minnesota Wild have yet to score on the power play. The Jets most prosperous stretch on the power play last season was from Dec. -/ when Winnipeg scored nine power play goals over eight games (9-for-8). PK power Despite allowing a power play goal in each of the last three games, the Jets penalty kill remains one of the most effective in the NHL. Winnipeg holds a penalty kill percentage of 9.% which ranks third in the NHL as of Oct. 5. Detroit remains the only team in the NHL to not allow a power play goal. Jacob Trouba is the Jets leading penalty killer, spending :55 TOI per game while shorthanded. He s also tied with Mark Stuart for the team-lead in blocked shots at. Better draw Through seven games, the Jets hold a team faceoff percentage of 5.% which is a marked improvement over Winnipeg s faceoff success last season. Winnipeg has won 7-of- faceoffs and Bryan Little leads the group with 6 wins. Newcomer Mathieu Perreault sports a team-best 58.% success rate. Winnipeg ranks sixth with an average of 7. shots against per game. Winnipeg has also done well to get shots on the opposition s net averaging.6 shots per game which ranks eighth in the league. The Jets reached a season-high shots on net on Oct. versus Tampa Bay (- L). Forwards Blake Wheeler (8 shots) and Michael Frolik (7 shots) led the way in that category on Friday. Winnipeg has held the shot advantage in five of the last six games. PLAYER NOTES Toby s point tally Defenceman Toby Enstrom registered two assists on Oct. versus Tampa Bay (- L) and jumped out to the Jets point lead with six assists in seven games. Enstrom was on a similarly good roll to begin - when he opened the season on a five-game (6A) assist streak. Little goal lead Centre Bryan Little scored the Jets first goal of the season on Oct. 9 in Arizona (6- W) and then scored Winnipeg s first power play goal on Friday versus Tampa Bay (- L). In between that, he s collected two other goals and now leads the Jets with four so far this season. The 6-year-old had a hot start in - as well, collecting seven goals in the first month of last season. He ended the year with career-bests in assists () and points (6). Little s personal best for power play goals in a season is which he registered in 8-9. Your every day Pav Ondrej Pavelec didn t go the distance in Winnipeg s last game on Friday versus Tampa Bay (- L), but in starting the game he remained one of three goalies in the NHL to play in every one of his team s game so far this season. In six starts and seven appearances this season, Pavelec has a record of -- with a.7 goals against average and.899 save percentage.
