Editorial Table of contents In recent magazines we have been reporting on a few of the larger projects we have carried out. These are jobs that show how we can easily adapt ourselves to different situations, even in circumstances that might at first glance seem too complex to allow in-situ work. This might give readers the idea that we only mobilize when such major challenges come up, but this is not the case. We treat every assignment with the same professionalism and enthusiasm, whether it is the replacement of a giant azimuth thruster or an underwater inspection. The articles in this magazine focus on some of the smaller jobs, which are also dealt with in a skilled and proficient manner. If a problem arises, no matter how big or small, it is important for you that it gets solved as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Solving problems is exactly what we do, so do not hesitate to contact us for advice on dealing with both unusual and typical situations. Permanent underwater insert repair in Norway gements for the needed equipment were made in close cooperation with the local support base while a Hydrex diving-technician team was mobilized to Bergen. After arrival on site and installation of a workstation, both an on-board and an underwater inspection were made of the damaged area. This revealed that a 600 mm x 300 mm insert plate needed to be installed. An 800 mm x 600 mm mobdock was therefore constructed to seal off the affected area from all water ingress during the operation. Small holes were drilled at the crack ends to indicate the location where the mobdock was to be placed on the outboard side of the hull. It was then installed and all water was pumped out to create a dry environment. Onboard preparation prior to insert repair Hydrex was contacted to carry out a permanent insert repair on board a research vessel that had suffered a crack in the bow section of its hull plating. The work was carried out during the vessel s planned stop in the port of Bergen, Norway. The next step was to cut out the frame around the crack to the same size as the insert, which was then welded with a deep penetration weld accor- Because it was essential for the customer that the ship could keep its sailing schedule, he greatly appreciated the flexibility that Hydrex offers. The company has a worldwide network of offices and service stations and can therefore mobilize a team and equipment very fast to service a vessel at the most feasible stop on its schedule. A repair procedure was devised by the Hydrex technical department and once a location had been chosen all arran- Newly installed insert before deep penetration welding 4 All Hydrex welders are certified by class
New insert after deep penetration weld ding to the class approved Hydrex procedures. After completing the weld seam of the insert plate, an ultrasonic test was performed by a local UT inspector. Frame re-installed over new insert after leakage test During the repair, the team was asked to inspect one of the pipes on board as it was thought to be damaged. Luckily the damage was found to be limited to the pipe valve which was consequently repaired. Because all Hydrex divers are trained to perform a wide range of operations this unexpected inspection and the consequent repair was performed swiftly without unnecessary loss of time or quality for either this additional or the main operation. The Hydrex team performed a permanent repair instead of installing a more common temporary doubler plate and this was all done within a very short time frame. This solution means that this area of the ship will not require further repairs during her next drydocking. In the meantime additional services were performed for the customer without any lengthening of the operations. The vessel could sail on time as the repair was carried out well within the available time frame. Worldwide network of offices and service stations 5
Fast underwater ship hull cleaning on largest container vessels in the world Hydrex hull cleaning equipment loaded onto workboat Recently Hydrex Spain mobilized men and equipment to perform cleaning work with the in-house developed Hydrex equipment on two container vessels, each with a length of almost 400 metres while they were at anchorage two kilometres off the coast of Algeciras. The operation was performed with the largest cleaning unit in the set: the MC313 Typhoon. This is a most advanced and versatile machine and is designed to adapt easily to the shape of a ship s hull. Ultra large vessels like these container ships can therefore be serviced much faster than by any other comparable unit. Preparation of hull cleaning equipment prior to departure to container vessel 6
Hydrex diver ready to start hull cleaning Underwater hull cleaning of ultra large container vessel Hydrex Spain and all Hydrex offices and service stations are equipped with a full set of these hull cleaning units which can be mobilized rapidly to any port. All divers are trained to achieve the fastest possible cleaning rates without losing the high quality Hydrex is known for. During the operation in Algeciras the team split up so that they could have two units in the water working non-stop. This combined with the extremely fast hull cleaning rate of the Typhoons enabled them to finish the entire operation in only 11 hours. The unique design of the Hydrex series of hull cleaning units provides the efficiency and durability demanded by the harsh underwater environment. All systems are carefully constructed to minimize the occurrence of damage on the underlying paint layers while still removing all types of fouling. This restores a vessel s performance as close to its optimum condition as possible and offers ship owners a considerably saving in fuel. Ultra large container vessel dwarfs Hydrex workboat 7
