JOHNNY JONES HEAD COACH 4TH YEAR AT LSU (16TH YEAR AS HEAD COACH) Consistency and Improvement. The two watchwords of the first three years of Johnny Jones tenure as LSU men s basketball coach. 19 wins. 9 SEC wins in 2013 20 wins, 9 SEC wins in 2014. NIT bid 22 wins, 11 SEC wins in 2015. NCAA Tournament appearance. Top 3 in the SEC. In three years, Jones has won 61 games overall and 29 in the Southeastern Conference. That s more than any coach at LSU has won in their first three years on the job in Baton Rouge. Jones is also the first LSU coach to take his team to two post-season events in their first three years as the head coach. Now as Jones prepares for his fourth season at the helm as head coach of the LSU Tigers, he prepares to bring in a recruiting class that some publications has named No. 1 in the country. There is No. 1 overall high school recruit Ben Simmons, who grew up in Australia and played at Montverde in Florida. No. 14 player Antonio Blakeney also of Florida and Mr. Basketball of Louisiana, Brandon Sampson of Madison Prep in Baton Rouge. Throw in New Orleans native Craig Victor who has transferred from Arizona, seniors Keith Hornsby and Josh Grey, along with junior Tim Quarterman and several players with a year s experience in the program and the consistency and improvement is set to continue for LSU Basketball. For Johnny Jones, his head coaching tenure is cementing his legacy at LSU after 21 years involved with the program: Four years as a player. 13 years a member of Dale Brown s coaching staff. In his fourth year as the head coach at LSU. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and served as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. Jones in his three seasons have put on the floor teams that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that THE JOHNNY JONES RECORD /-OVERALL/ /CONF./ YEAR SCHOOL W-L PCT. In his opening statement after being hired, Jones brought back the HIT philosophy of LSU Basketball that Coach Dale Brown used when Jones played and coached. The HIT philosophy stands for Hard, Intelligent and Together. More than anything, Jones, since his hiring on April 13, 2012, has gone out of his way to embrace all aspects of the community, traveling throughout the state on the LSU Tiger Tour and speaking to civic groups and youth organizations. Included in his points in all his stops was how much he wants people to embrace LSU basketball. It s not only fans he wants to hear that message but high school coaches who are excited again to have LSU coaches visiting with them on a regular basis. LSU and Coach Jones has a successful booster club that gathers before each game for food and scouting reports in the practice facility prior to each home game, Jones is also hosting public luncheons each month to talk to fans about their basketball program and the luncheons are drawing strong crowds each month during the season. Besides basketball, there is life outside the arena and academics is an important and successful part of LSU life. Every senior in the LSU program has graduated during Jones tenure and in two of the last three years, the basketball program has posted a perfect 1,000 APR score. This is Jones third career head coaching position he has served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the 1999-2000 season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the 2001-02 season. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. The player would turn assistant coach and be with Coach Dale Brown for another 407 contests. As a player at LSU, besides playing on the 1981 NCAA Final Four team, Jones started 54 career games. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, asst.) in an NCAA Final Four. Johnny Jones and his wife Kelli, have two children, John and Jillian. JIM HAWTHORNE S FINAL SEC BROADCAST JOURNEY CONTINUES; THE LAST TRIP TO ONE OF LEAGUE S NEWEST MEMBERS There have been some memorable games involving Texas A&M that Jim Hawthorne has called, some of them in post-season play before the Aggies joined the Southeastern Conference. LSU had to defeat A&M twice on the same day in baseball in a doubleheader at A&M that stretched from day to night in 1989 in an NCAA regional that advanced LSU to the College World Series. Then Hawthorne called the Darrel Mitchell long-distance shot that game LSU a win over the Aggies in basketball in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, a year LSU would advance to the Final Four. Now Hawthorne will broadcast his final game from Reed Arena Tuesday night as part of his final tour of SEC arenas in his storied broadcasting career. Adding to this final season was the chance a week ago Monday to stand on the steps of the state capital as John Bel Edwards Master of Ceremonies for the inauguration ceremonies for the new Governor of Louisiana. Hawthorne is concentrating on what is now the final regular season games of his final season as Voice of the Tigers. He signed off from baseball at the College World Series last June and from his final football broadcast at the Texas Bowl in Houston. Hawthorne missed several November games in basketball and three football games after a medical procedure he described at a recent press conference in NYC, where he received the prestigious Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation, as a bump in the road. When he began as the voice of basketball at LSU, he commuted for two seasons from his then home in Shreveport. He sat out the 1981-82 season before moving to Baton Rouge to fully take over the job of basketball play-by-play beginning with the 1982-83 season and eventually would add football and baseball to his assignments becoming the voice of more than one generation of LSU fans. Since 1979 he has been on the basketball call for six SEC title teams (1981, 1985, 1991, 2000, 2006, 2009) and three NCAA Final Fours (1981, 1986, 2006). Among Hawthorne s broadcast highlights away from LSU include broadcasting much of the career of seven-foot center Robert Parrish at Centenary and the play-by-play voice of the Shreveport Steamer of the World Football League in 1975 with a soon to be more famous color announcer -- talk show host Larry King. Chris Blair, who has called Georgia Southern sports for over a decade, has been chosen as Hawthorne s successor as Voice of the Tigers and will begin calling CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES TIM QUARTERMAN (4) Game Date Pts Reb/Ast 2014-15 (2) vs. Southern Miss 12-29-14 12 14R vs Ole Miss 2-28-15 18 10R-10A 2015-16 (2) at Houston 12/13/15 27 10R vs. Kentucky 1/5/16 21 10R JOSH GRAY (1) Game Date Pts Ast. 2014-15 (1) at Ole Miss 1/14/15 14 10 BEN SIMMONS (13) Game Date Pts Reb. 2015-16 (13) McNeese 11/13/15 11 13 South Alabama 11/19/15 23 16 Marquette 11/23/15 21 20 NC State 11/24/15 10 (ast.) 14 at Charleston 11/30/15 15 18 North Florida 12/2/15 43 14 at Houston 12/13/15 13 14 Gardner-Webb 12/16/15 11 12 Wake Forest 12/29/15 21 12 Vanderbilt 1/2/16 36 14 Kentucky 1/5/16 14 10 at Florida 1/9/16 28 17 Arkansas 1/16/16 16 18 ANTONIO BLAKENEY (1) Game Date Pts Reb.. 2015-16 (1) McNeese 11/13/15 22 10 AARON EPPS (1) Game Date Pts Reb.. 2015-16 (1) Gardner-Webb 12/16/15 10 11 CRAIG VICTOR II (2) Game Date Pts Reb.. 2015-16 (2) Kentucky 1/5/16 15 12 Arkansas 1/16/16 16 12 2015-16 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

Victor played 20 minutes, hitting 4-of-7 field goals, including 1-of-2 three-pointers to score 10 points with five rebounds, one blocks and three steals. Victor had one of his shining moments in the game against Arkansas (1/16) with the game winning offensive rebound and baskets, but the game was a pretty good showing with his second double double in nine games with 16 points and 12 rebounds with three blocks, 1 steal and no turnovers in 34 minutes. SIMMONS MAKES MIDSEASON LIST OF 25 FOR WOODEN AWARD Freshman Ben Simmons of LSU is one of two freshman named by The Los Angeles Athletic Club which announced last week its John R. Wooden Award s Midseason Top 2. Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 25 student-athletes who are the frontrunners for the sport s most prestigious individual honor, based on their performances during the first half of the 2015-2016 season. The leading candidates will be further pared to 20 top players in early February. The ten-man Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. Joining Simmons as freshman on the top 25 was Jamal Murray of Kentucky. The SEC has three selections with Simmons and Murray joined by Tyler Ulis, also of Kentucky. SIMMONS NAMED MIDSEASON FOY BY SPORTING NEWS This past Tuesday, Ben Simmons was named the midseason Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News. The web site for the long-standing magazine writes: Simmons has been spectacular enough to make one wonder if there are any other freshmen in college basketball. There are some fine ones Brandon Ingram at Duke, Henry Ellenson at Marquette but only one who has been dominant. Simmons leads his team in scoring, rebounding and assists. He get twice as many rebounds as anyone else among the Tigers. He not only is a prolific passer, but the most spectacular in the college game and perhaps the best as his size to ever play the game. BEN SIMMONS HAS 20-POINT SCORING STREAK STOPPED VS. UK WAS FIRST TIGER SINCE 2013 WITH FOUR STRAIGHT 20-PT GAMES With his 36 point game at Vanderbilt (1/2), Simmons became the first LSU Tiger to record four consecutive games of 20 points or more since Charles Carmouche did it at the end February and into March of 2013. Simmons had three straight 20-point games in November and made it four straight in this streak before it was snapped vs. UK (1/5): Vs. Oral Roberts 24 pts (12/19) Vs. American 23 pts (12/22) Vs. Wake Forest 21 pts (12/29) At Vanderbilt 36 pts (1/2) Simmons posted his ninth game of 20 points or more at Florida (1/9) with the third best scoring game of the year, scoring 28 against the Gators... He has 13 double doubles this year, 12 in points-rebounds and the infamous rebound-assist double up versus North Carolina State He leads the SEC in double doubles and is T5 nationally in double doubles. He is the leading freshman in the NCAA in double doubles by three. Now in its sixth year, the program consists of 48 NCAA Division I men s basketball coaches competing for fan votes in a four-round contest that helps raise money for charities of the coaches choice. Coach Jones has chosen as his charity recipient, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Donations throughout the competition will be made totaling over $345,000. The further the coaches advance in the competition, the more money is raised for their respective charities. The winning coach will receive $100,000 to benefit his charity of choice. Fans will decide who the winner is over the next 10 weeks, casting votes on a custom online microsite at www.espn.com/infiniti. Voters can cast one vote per day for a coach s charity. The site is now open for voting. The first round of voting is underway through Jan. 24. There is a guarantee of at least $1,000 to each coach s charitable organization. JONES TIGERS VERY YOUNG Now the number skewed up a bit with Keith Hornsby and Craig Victor playing, but LSU shows a playing experience number of 1.13 in Kenpom.com and that ranked 328 out of 351 teams in Division I in terms of experience. The present Division I average is 1.70 years. Only Missouri and Kentucky have younger and lower numbers than the LSU average. FAST-PACED, HIGH SCORING TIGERS LSU has averaged over 70 points each of the three seasons that Johnny Jones has been at LSU, last year averaging 73.4 points per game. FREE THROW SHOOTING It was just another one of those nights against Arkansas at the line as the Tigers made just 9-of-18 free throws in the first 20 minutes. LSU was able to improve things a little in the second half, making 8-of-13 (61.5%) to finish at 54.8% for the game, making 17-of-31 LSU has had five games of less than 56 percent at the free throw line, including the Gardner-Webb game when LSU was just 12-of-29 at the line (41.4%) But LSU has gotten to the line in good numbers, especially with the play of Ben Simmons. The Tigers are 301-of-452 for the season (66.6%), making 50 more free throws than opponents with 76 more free throw attempts. LSU is ninth in the league in free throw percentage. Only Ole Miss (308) and South Carolina (340) have made more free throws in 17 games this season. A total of 30.8% of Simmons 340 points have come at the free throw line. HORNSBY PROVIDES THE SENIOR LEADERSHIP; 8 GAMES DOUBLE FIGURES Keith Hornsby is one of the two seniors on the team and it was obvious once he was able to begin playing after pre-season internal surgery, that his toughness and ability would make him a leader on this team. Hornsby started his return with six straight double figure scoring games for the Tigers. Although he only had 9 versus UK (1/5), he helped LSU to the win with two treys, two assists, a block and two steals. In his debut game against Houston (12/13) at Hofheinz Pavilion, Hornsby entered in the first half and made six treys, hit 10 field goals and had no turnovers in an amazing 32-point performance Hornsby made a trey with seven seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. In another road game at Vandy (1/2), Hornsby again had a 20-plus number, hitting 8-of-13 field goals (4-7 treys) and 3-4 at the free throw line for 23 points. With some stat help from his Grammy Award winning father, Bruce Hornsby, the 32-point effort was a college career high At UNC-Asheville, Hornsby had 27 vs. Liberty and 26 vs. Ohio State. His previous LSU high was 25 against Tennessee on March 4, 2015 Hornsby had 10 plus-20-point games at UNC-A before coming to LSU. The Vandy game (1/2) gave him a total of 16 games of 20 or more points. In his 10 games, he is averaging 14.2 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and has 17 assists and 12 steals. He is shooting 48.4 percent from the field (45-of- 93) with 19 treys (42.2%). He is also very good at the free throw line, hitting 33-of-38 (86.8%), going 7-of-7 over the last three games at the stripe. Hornsby went over 1,000 combined career points at the two schools in the Auburn game last year in the Southeastern Conference Tournament Hornsby hit 72 treys a season ago and averaged 13.4 points a game for LSU as a junior He now has 91 career treys. TIM QUARTERMAN OVERALL GOOD SEASON Junior Tim Quarterman had one of his best overall games of his season against Kentucky (1/5) as in 31 minutes he hit 9-of-15 field goals, including two treys and a free throw to finish with his fourth 20-plus point game of the season (21 points). It was his sixth 20-plus point game of his LSU career. He also had 10 points for his fourth double double of his career and even more importantly, seven assists and no turnovers. It was his 17th game of five assists or better at LSU, fifth this season. Quarterman has come off the bench the last two games. He had 14 against Ole Miss in 20 minutes (1/13), but Josh Gray s strong play limited him to just 10 minutes against Arkansas (1/16). Quarterman has had eight double figure scoring games this season. For the season, Quarterman is averaging 10.9 points per game with a 4.6 rebound average Earlier this season he became the 31st person to have 200 career assists at LSU (234 now). He is 13 away from joining the group of LSU players with 100 career steals. QUARTERMAN S NUMBERS EARN NOTICE Quarterman s near triple double of 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists drew the attention of ESPN Stats and Info who posted the following after the game on Jan. 5 versus UK: Tim Quarterman joined Denzel Valentine as the only 2 players with a game with at least 20 pts, 10 rebs & 5 asts vs a Top-25 opponent this season. JOSH GRAY STARTS LAST TWO GAMES WITH GOOD SUCCESS IN WINS LSU s other senior Josh Gray has taken advantage of moving back in the starting lineup at point guard the last two games with good performances against Ole Miss (1/13) and Arkansas (1/16). Against Ole Miss, Gray is 2-of-2 from the field, including one trey, and 2-of-2 at the free throw line to post seven points with four assists. Versus Arkansas in 30 minutes, Gray was 6-of-8 from the field with three free throws and three assists in a 15-point night. ANTONIO BLAKENEY The freshman class at LSU is not just Ben Simmons there are two more very capable freshman Antonio Blakeney of Sarasota, Florida and Brandon Sampson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Both have started at various points of the season and continue to be top contributors to the squad. Blakeney has been almost a regular part of the LSU line, starting 14-of-the-17 games and is averaging 9.7 points per game. Blakeney struggled from the arc in late December and early January, but has hit two treys in each of the last three games. Against Ole Miss and Arkansas last week, he came off the bench and responded with important double figure efforts in both games. Blakeney had 15 points against the Rebels (1/13), including 7-of-7 from the free throw line with three assists and two steals and 10 more against Arkansas (1/16). Those were the freshman s first double figure scoring games since Dec. 19 and he now has nine for the year. Twice against McNeese State (11/13) and South Alabama (11/19), Blakeney had 22 points. Epps played 14 minutes at Florida (1/9), hitting his only field goal attempt with three rebounds. He scored four against Ole Miss, playing 12 minutes with four rebounds. Bridgewater in the nine games is averaging 3.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. ELBERT ROBINSON III While he was dressed but DNP in the games against Charleston and North Florida, the sophomore did start at Houston (12/13) and versus Gardner-Webb (12/16) In fact he has started seven of the 10 games in which he has played. LSU is 281-40 in non-conference games in the building with the Wake Forest loss (12/29) stopping a 15-game non-conference home win streak In SEC games in the 45th season of play, LSU is 241-139. AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED TEAMS With the win over Kentucky (1/5), LSU has 77 wins all-time against teams ranked in the AP poll. LSU has recorded 37 of those 77 wins against top 10 teams. LSU s last win against a top 10 teams in the AP poll came on Dec. 19, 2011, as LSU defeated No. 10 Marquette, 67-59, here in Baton Rouge. Coach Johnny Jones is 5-6 against ranked teams. The 18-point win was the largest margin over a ranked opponent by LSU since Jan. 29, 2000 when LSU defeated No. 5 Arizona... It is the highest ranked win for LSU over UK since the 1986 NCAA Regional Final when UK was ranked No. 3. TIGERS GOING FOR FIFTH CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASON With 22 wins last year, the Tigers easily earned their fourth consecutive winning season (18 in 2012, 19 in 2013, 20 in 2014 and 22 in 2015). That tied for the fourth longest run of consecutive winning seasons in program history: 11 1982-1993; 6 2002-2007; 5 1977-1981; 4 2012-present; 4 1932-35 LSU s 22 wins tied for 10th most wins in a single season with the 1992-93, 1969-70 and 1952-53 seasons A total of 13 teams at LSU have won at least 22 games in a season topped by the 1980-81 team which won 31 games. SIMMONS HAS EARNED BOTH SEC WEEKLY HONORS Ben Simmons has the distinction of having won both SEC weekly honors in the first four weeks of the basketball season. In week two, he was named the league Freshman of the Week for LSU s play in the home games against Kennesaw State (11/16) and South Alabama (11/19) Simmons averaged 22.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and three steals in the two wins. Then on Dec. 8, he was named the player of the week after averaging 29 points, 16 rebounds, 5.5 assists, three steals and two blocks per game against Charleston and North Florida. The 43 points in the North Florida game was the most by an SEC freshman since Tennessee s Allen Houston had 43 points against LSU on Feb. 10, 1990. He was again named Freshman of the Week a second time on Jan. 4 for his effort against Wake Forest and the conference opener at Vanderbilt. BLAKENEY WAS FIRST SEC FRESHMAN OF WEEK Freshman Antonio Blakeney s 22 point opening contest against McNeese (11/13) earned him co-sec Freshman of the Week honors announced on Nov. 16. Review of previous opening games by freshmen show that Blakeney s 22 points equaled the 22 points that New Orleans native Randy Livingston scored in the opening game of the 1994-95 season. Livingston also had nine assists in the game. The 22 points was the most by any player in an opening game since Johnny O Bryant III scored 25 points in the 2013-14 season opener at UMass. IS THE 5 BY 5 STAT LINE ACTUALLY POSSIBLE? SIMMONS CLOSE AGAINST NORTH FLORIDA WITH 4 BY 5 Olgan Uluc of Fox Sports Australia has raised the question in a column if Ben Simmons can be the first D1 college player to accomplish the improbable stat line of 5 or more points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals in a game. Uluc wrote: In basketball, the double-double is an impressive, yet somewhat common, statistical feat, where a player accumulates a total of at least 10 in two statistical categories. The triple-double is less common The quadruple-double is extremely rare, and the quintuple-double is essentially unheard of. The five-by-five It would be the ideal achievement for a player like Simons. The statistical phenomenon is so rare that no college basketball player has ever achieved it, and only 10 NBA players have ever managed to put together the stat-line (Julius Irving, Hakeem Olajuwon 6 times, David Robinson, Derrick Coleman, Vlade Divac, Jamaal Tinsley, Andrei Kirilenko, Marcus Camby and Nicolas Batum). In the preseason game against Southwest Baptist, Simmons was just a steal away from achieving the statistical phenomenon; posting 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, six blocks & four steals. For the second time this season, against North Florida, he was 4 by 5 with 43 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. He 2015-16 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

had three steals. SIMMONS AND THE FOULS DRAWN The fouls drawn was something not really thought much about by this program until an August trip to Australia. The FIBA box scores not only show fouls committed, but fouls drawn. In three of the games there, Simmons was fouled 11 times in one game, nine in a second and eight times in a third game. With Simmons shooting buckets of free throws in some games, the fouls drawn category has shown itself as recently as the Florida game on 1/9 when he was fouled 13 times and made 14-of-16 free throws. He was fouled 13 times against Wake Forest (12/29) and made 11-of-16 free throws. In the conference opener at Vandy (1/2), he was fouled 12 times and finished 16-of-19 at the free throw line. For the season, he is 105-of-142 at the stripe or 73.9 percent. WILL IT BE ANOTHER 23 YEARS When Tim Quarterman posted a triple-double of 18 points. 10 rebounds, 10 assists versus Ole Miss in the Maravich Center on Feb. 28, 2015, it marked the first triple double in just under 23 years. On March 19, 1992, in the NCAA Tournament first round game against BYU, Shaquille O Neal of LSU posted the points-rebounds-blocks triple of 26-13-11 It was the sixth and final one of his career and he currently has the record along with Michael Anderson of Drexel (1985-88) for most triples in a career. There is also one recorded triple-double for Pete Maravich from 1969. While it may have been expected Ben Simmons would be the next triple double, Quarterman himself provided a lot of the power to flirt with one against Kentucky when he had 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. THE DOUBLE DOUBLES LSU had three players with double doubles against UK (1/5): Tim Quarterman 21 points, 10 rebounds; Craig Victor II 15 points, 12 rebounds; Ben Simmons 14 points, 10 rebounds. The last time three players doubled up was last year at Ole Miss (1/14/15): Josh Gray 14 points, 10 assists; Jarell Martin 18 points, 14 rebounds; Jordan Mickey 11 points, 11 rebounds. The last time three players doubled up with all three having points and rebounds only was Dec. 10, 1991 vs. Nicholls State: Harold Boudreaux 11 points-10 rebounds; Vernel Singleton 15 points-10 rebounds; Shaquille O Neal 23 points-13 rebounds. IN TUSCALOOSA, OF COURSE THERE WILL BE A PARADE THEN SOME BASKETBALL So the road week will continue for LSU with a Saturday 1 p.m. game in Tuscaloosa against the University of Alabama. And, since Nick Saban was introduced many years ago at Coleman Coliseum when he took the job at halftime of an LSU-Alabama game, why shouldn t the national championship football parade in Tuscaloosa take place prior to the LSU-Alabama game. That s what was announced late last week as the 10 a.m. parade and ceremony will lead into the contest. The game will be televised on ESPNU and broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network. LSU returns home on Jan. 26 against Georgia.
