The Skyhawks are turning to their most experienced pitcher in the home opener, as head coach Brad Goss hands the ball to redshirt senior Alex Boshers for his 65th career appearance and 23rd career start. UT Martin received an inspired start out of Boshers last Wednesday at No. 27 Ole Miss. Making his first appearance since having Tommy John surgery in March 2013, he tossed four innings while allowing just two hits and one earned run. He retired the first eight batters he faced but was tagged with the loss after his lone run allowed scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. LEADING OFF The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team opens the 2014 home portion of its schedule with a midweek contest against a familiar rival in Southern Illinois at Skyhawk Field. This marks the 10th consecutive season that the Skyhawks and Salukis have locked horns for a home-and-home series. UT Martin has won two of the last three meetings against Southern Illinois held at Skyhawk Field but fell 8-4 by an 8-4 margin last season. The Skyhawks will make the short 130-mile trek to Carbondale in mid-april. UT Martin is coming off its first win of the season and first win in the young career of interim head coach Brad Goss, as the Skyhawks bested Eastern Michigan by a 5-3 margin on Sunday. Freshman Ben Upton continued his red-hot series with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, scoring a run while driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. Stu Jones earned his second career win out of the bullpen while Houston recorded his first career save in a game started by Alex Martin (5.2 innings, two runs allowed). Against the Salukis, the Skyhawks will give the starting nod to redshirt senior right-hander Alex Boshers (0-1, 2.25 ERA). In his first start after Tommy John surgery last week against No. 27 Ole Miss, Boshers conceded just one run over four innings of work. Southern Illinois rolls into Skyhawk Field on a three-game winning streak, turning away defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Austin Peay (14-4), Western Illinois (10-3) and Nicholls State (8-7 in 11 innings) last week. The Saluki lineup features five regulars who hit over.300, including seniors Cody Daily (team-high.450 average) and Donny Duschinsky (team-best two homers and eight RBI s). Redshirt freshman righty Connor McFadden (0-0, 18.00 ERA) is listed as Southern Illinois probable starting pitcher. McFadden made the start at Austin Peay last Tuesday, yielding four runs on two hits and five walks over two frames.

INTERIM HEAD COACH BRAD GOSS Brad Goss was appointed UT Martin s interim head baseball coach on Sept. 4, 2013. A nine-year member of the Skyhawk coaching staff, Goss became the university s first-ever full-time assistant baseball coach in 2007-2008, when Cates tabbed him for the job. Goss had spent the previous year as a volunteer assistant at UT Martin and two years before that as a graduate assistant. As the Skyhawks hitting and third base coach, Goss worked to develop the hitters, train the catchers and spent five years as the program s recruiting coordinator. Goss has been an influential member of the resurgence of the Skyhawk baseball program over the last four years. With Goss as an assistant, the Skyhawks have produced either a Major League Baseball draftee or a MLB free agent signee in four straight years. In 2010, Wes Alsup signed with the Atlanta Braves organization after setting the UT Martin single-season record with seven saves. One year later, infielder Trey Karlen was drafted in the 33rd round by the Washington Nationals after becoming the first player in program history to hit at least 20 home runs and steal at least 50 bases in a career. Then in June 2012, Alec Mills was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round after he ranked amongst the Ohio Valley Conference leaders in innings pitched (6.36 per game), strikeouts (74), least walks (2.63 per game) and ERA (3.94). Dan Tobik was then chosen by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 39th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Despite spending two of his seasons as a full-time starter, the 6-4 right-hander is the Skyhawks all-time saves leader with eight. He also ranks second in UT Martin history in career strikeouts (263) and appearances (80) while ranking third in innings pitched (275.0) and seventh in games started (30). In 2012, Goss coached one of the program s all-time greats in Jordan Owen. He ranked first in UT Martin history in games played (204), second in hits (224), home runs (35) and at-bats (742), third in doubles (43) and runs batted in (134), fourth in triples (seven) and eighth in runs scored (112). Goss also helped mentor Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomers Sonny Mastromatteo and Nico Zych during the 2012 campaign. In 2011, Goss and the Skyhawks broke five team records and made their second-ever appearance in the OVC Tournament, producing their first victory in the event with a 6-2 win over Eastern Kentucky on May 26. He also coached Phil Sorensen, who made the Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team while earning OVC first team and All-Freshman honors. UT Martin produced 24 wins in 2010, its most since joining the Division-I level in 1992-93. His hitters also broke the all-time school record for at-bats (1,901), hits (579), doubles (115), home runs (75), runs batted in (347), total bases (933) and times hitby-pitch (60). The 2010 Skyhawk offense also ranks in the top-five all-time in runs scored (380, second), slugging percentage (.491, fifth), bases on balls (195, fifth), stolen bases (84, fifth), and hits per game (10.53, second). In 2009, Goss helped lead the Skyhawks to their best Division-I regular-season finish (21-30) until the 2010 team broke the wins mark. UT Martin produced its most amount of OVC victories in a single-season (10) since joining the league in 1993. Under his tutelage, the Skyhawks set the all-time benchmark in UT Martin history in hits (572), home runs (57), total bases (865) and hits per game (11.22). The record for hits, home runs and total bases were later wiped out by the 2010 team. Four of Goss hitters were named to the All-OVC postseason team in 2010, a single-season UT Martin record. Ty Nelson, Trey Karlen and Jordan Owen were named to the league s second team, while Brent Morris was a member of the All-OVC freshman squad. With Goss as an assistant coach, the team has produced some of its all-time great hitters. Cody Terry graduated as the program s all-time leader in hits (226), runs scored (145) and doubles (47), while Wes Patterson tallied program highs in home runs (39) and RBI (171) while becoming one of three members in Skyhawk history to collect 200 career hits. A 2011 MLB Draft selection, Karlen became the program s only player to amass 20-plus home runs (23) and 50-plus stolen bases (51), despite only playing two seasons. Goss came to UT Martin from Arkansas Tech, where he earned his bachelor s degree in 2004 and was a three-time All-Gulf South Conference selection for the Wonder Boys. A four-year starting catcher for Arkansas Tech, he played for his father Billy Goss and was named to the South Central All-Region team in 2003 and the GSC All-Tournament team in 2001. He was also a four-year member of the GSC Athletic Honor Roll. At the time of his departure, Goss held eight Arkansas Tech career records, including most hits (220), runs scored (152), runs batted in (169), home runs (29), doubles (58), total bases (373), walks (110) and hit by pitch (39). He sported a.350 career batting average during his days at Tech. In the summer of 2006, Goss coached in the Alaska Baseball League, where he assisted former San Diego Padre slugger and West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx (AA) skipper Phil Plantier. As an assistant coach for the Athletes in Action Fire, he had the opportunity to work with some of the nation s top prospects. Goss earned his master s degree in education from UT Martin in the fall of 2006. In July 2009, he married the former Anna Moore of Trezevant, Tenn., a 2007 graduate of UT Martin and second grade teacher. The couple resides in Martin.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN After unplayable conditions at Skyhawk Field forced its scheduled home series against Eastern Michigan to be moved to Belmont s ES Rose Park, UT Martin now will play 16 of its first 17 games away from home. After the Skyhawks home opener against Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Feb. 25, the team hits the road for eight road games in the span of 10 days. UPTON UNSUNG HERO AGAINST EMU Freshman Ben Upton was a revelation for the Skyhawks against Eastern Michigan, posting a.909 slugging percentage and.583 on-base percentage after not seeing time at all in the season-opening series at UAB. He scored and drove in at least one run in all three games against Eastern Michigan, clubbing the team s first homer of the year in Game 1. In the series finale, his RBI single in the bottom of the eighth led to the go-ahead run in UT Martin s first win of the season. SKYHAWKS COMPETE EARLY Despite the 0-4 record, the Skyhawks have been very competitive in the first four games of the season. UT Martin either led or trailed by two runs or less after seven innings of play in all four games (three at UAB, one at No. 27 Ole Miss). STARTING PITCHING ON A ROLL EARLY The Skyhawk starting pitchers (Taylor Cox, Dalton Potts, Alex Martin, Alex Boshers) posted a remarkable 1.17 ERA in their first four games (23 innings) in 2014. Cox posted one of the best starts of his career, conceding just one unearned run on only six hits and zero walks over a careerhigh seven innings. Potts was masterful, shutting out the Blazers for seven innings wihle conceding just four hits and one walk. He registered a career-best nine strikeouts and departed the game with a 2-0 lead. Martin also minimized the damage out of the UAB bats, allowing only two earned runs over five frames in his debut. Making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2013, Boshers retired the first eight batters before allowing one earned run (on a wild pitch) in four innings at No. 27 Ole Miss. ZYCH NAMED PRESEASON ALL-OVC BY COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS Nico Zych was recognized as a Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference second teamer by College Sports Madness. Zych is the only Skyhawk returnee to have started in all 51 games last season. Zych hit.283 in 180 at-bats in 2013, batting primarily out of the No. 6 spot in the lineup. He tallied seven doubles, a triple and two homers, driving in 17 runs while scoring 17 runs himself. He led the DIAMOND CUTS UNIVERSITY INFORMATION Location: Martin, Tenn. He boasted a.952 fielding percentage at shorstop, the toughest defensive position on the diamond. POTTS WINS CAPE COD SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Over the summer, junior southpaw pitcher Dalton Potts helped the Cotuit (Mass.) Kettleers to a championship in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Cotuit finished the 2013 campaign with a 31-20 overall record under head coach Mike Roberts, claiming the 16th championship in franchise history in the nation s premier summer baseball organization. Potts didn t join the Kettleers until July 27 but he was very instrumental in the team s journey to the championship trophy. He allowed just one run over five innings to earn the victory over the same Bourne squad in Game 1 of the Western Division Championship series. That concluded a busy summer for Potts, who had previously earned All-Star status while playing for the Front Royal (Va.) Cardinals in the Valley Baseball League. He pitched well enough to make an appearance in the Valley League All- Star Game, pitching 0.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the North squad. Potts accomplishment marked the second straight summer in which a UT Martin baseball player had helped his team to a Cape Cod League title, as Dan Tobik was a valuable member of the Wareham Gatemen, the 2012 champions. He begins his windup with his glove placed on his right arm. After he releases the ball, he quickly switches his glove to his left hand during his followthrough in preparation to field a comeback grounder. After receiving the ball back from the catcher, he holds the ball in his left hand and places the glove back on his right arm. Smith was named a recipient of the second-annual Tom Walter College Baseball Inspiration Award in 2012. SKYHAWKS CHURN OUT YET ANOTHER MLB DRAFTEE Dan Tobik, a four-year member of the UT Martin baseball team from 2010-13, was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 39th round (1,177th overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft. The Skyhawk baseball program has now produced MLB Draft picks in three straight years. In 2011, Trey Karlen was drafted in the 33rd round by the Washington Nationals, while Alec Mills was picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round of the 2012 MLB Draft. TWO ADDITIONS TO COACHING STAFF Eric Ebers and Chris Gillies are both in their first seasons as assistant coaches at UT Martin. Ebers serves as the pitching coach while Gillies primarily works with strength and conditioning, as well as defense with the infielders and outfielders.
