The Game The Murray State women s basketball team will be hosting its final home game of the 2011-12 season, when UT Martin comes to the CFSB Center, Thursday, Feb. 16 for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The night will also feature the annual Senior Night to honor seniors Kayla Lowe and Mallory Schwab. Scouting UT Martin The Skyhawks are 17-8 overall and 11-1 in OVC play after winning their last eight games. UTM has two players that stand out on the season box score. Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome are not only averaging double-digits, they are both averaging around 20 points per game. Butler is contributing 22.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing, shooting.422 from the field,.411 from beyond the arc and adds 38 steals. Newsome is netting 19.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, shooting.448 from the field,.333 from three-point range and adds 136 assists, 47 steals and 15 blocks. The duo accounts for 52 percent of the overall and 50 percent of three-point shots made this season. While the rest of the team may not be averaging as many points, they are still threats, as the Skyhawks are making 43 percent of their shots this season and 36 percent of those from beyond the arc. Their strong shooting has rubbed off on their opponents, as they are making 43.5 percent of their overall shots and 33.3 percent of those from three-point range. The game may become a threepoint shoot out with the Racers. UTM is averaging 9.8 three s made per game, while MSU is netting 7.6 per game. Against the Skyhawks When the teams met 12 days ago the Racers dropped an 85-67 decision to the Skyhawks at the Elam Center. MSU was led by red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess, who tallied 26 points and added seven rebounds. Junior Kyra Watson tallied a career-high 13 rebounds and added eight points. Senior Kayla Lowe was the other MSU player in double- digits in the point s column with 16. UTM was led by Heather Butler, with 29 points. Jasmine Newsome added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Skyhawks. Free throws and rebounds were keys to the game. UTM went 15-of-21 from the charity stripe, while MSU was just 9-of-14. The Skyhawks also earned a 49-39 advantage in the rebounding column, including a 15-11 mark in offensive boards. Those offensive rebounds were key, as UTM scored 16 second-chance points to MSU s seven. The Series The all-time series is currently knotted at 32-games each after the Skyhawks have been the victors in the last four games. The Racers currently have an 18-12 lead in the series when playing in Murray. GAME NOTES Joining the 500 Club The Racers became the sixth team from the OVC to record the programs 500th victory when they defeated SEMO, 63-62 in the CFSB Center. The game was also the team s 108th win in the CFSB Center. MSU is now 500-643-2 in their 47th season of basketball. The Racers join Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee Tech in the club. Taking Charge of Monday Night After spending most of the first half of the season on the road the Racers are finally returning home and Monday nights are a big part of the action. Each Monday night for six weeks (Jan. 9-Feb. 13) MSU s women s basketball team has hosted a game at the CFSB Center. When the OVC schedule changed to have Saturday- Monday games for the women s teams in the conference the league implemented Taking Charge of Monday Night where each team is featured on OVCSports.com and the game they are playing will be featured free on OVCSports.TV. The Feb. 16 (Thursday) game against UTM is the Racers featured night. Elkins Doubling Up Junior Tessa Elkins made a diving play at the end of the game against Tennessee State (Feb. 6) that resulted in her first career double-double. The Cincinnati, Ohio native threw the ball to a waiting teammate and then went out-of-bounds, but it recorded her 10th rebound of the game to go with her 14 points, two assists, one block and one steal. 1,000 Point Club Membership Junior Mariah Robinson earned her membership in the 1,000 Point Club at Murray State, Feb. 1, 2012 against Morehead State. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native became the 18th member of the club and the ninth Racer to do so during her junior campaign. Robinson took 79 career games to reach the milestone and is the eighth fastest in MSU history. She currently has 1,032 points and is 15th on the career points list at MSU. Making Move Up or On Top-10 Lists Three members of the team are currently on three top- 10 lists at MSU. Junior Mariah Robinson is currently ranked No. 2 on the three s made chart, with 164. She is 46 from No. 1 (210-Amber Guffey). Senior Kayla Lowe also joined Robinson on the list, with her 134 career triples, tied for the No. 4 spot. She is nine from No. 3 (143-Ashley B. Hayes). Fellow senior Mallory Schwab also earned her way onto the blocks top-10 list. The Martinsville, Ind., native has 53 blocks and is tied for No. 7. She needs one more to move up to No. 6 (54-Karen Johnson). Three Point Season The Racers have made 197 triples this season, 85.0 percent of the school record for the most three s in a season (232). MSU has a season-high of 15 made in a single game (vs. Mid-Con) and has recorded the same or more triples than its opponents in every game this season. Of the 12 active players on the team, only one has not attempted a shot from beyond the arc and 7-of- 11 have made at least one. Nifty-Fifty Head Coach Rob Cross reached his first coaching win milestone with the Racers, 76-72, win over Tennessee Tech at the CFSB Center, Jan. 14, 2012. The win gave the fourth-year head coach his 50th career win in just his 108th game coached. Shaking Up the Line-Up The Racers have now used 11 different starting lineups this season, the second most for a Division I team this season. The only other team with more this season is Austin Peay with 14 different starting line-up combinations. MSU has also started nine of their 12 players on the team, with only Erica Burgess earning a starting role in all the Racers games this season. High Pressure Defense The new high-pressure defense that the Racers are playing this season has forced three of their opponents into 30+ turnovers and eight more into 20+ turnovers. This is the first time since at least 1996-97, when individual game stats are available, that the team has forced more than one opponent into 30+ turnovers. The most forced during that span was 39 (Nov. 18, 2009) by Mid-Continent. So far this season MSU has forced Mid- Con into 33, Ball State into 32 and Evansville into 31. Jessica s Missing for the Season Both of the Racers players named Jessica, Jessica Winfrey and Jessica Holder, will miss the 2011-12 campaign due to injury. Winfrey was a key starter for the Racers last year, while Holder was sidelined for most of the 2010-11 campaign due to injury as well. Up Next The Racers will play the final two regular-season games on the road at Tennessee State (Feb. 23) and Tennessee Tech (Feb. 25).
