The Mavericks also average 38.7 rebounds per game in away games compared to 32.4 at Baxter Arena. Second-Half Success Omaha has averaged 42.8 second-half points this season, up from 37.9 first-half points per game. The Mavericks have seen second-half success from 3-point range, shooting.415 (81-of-195) in the second stanza compared to.314 (64-of-204) in the first. Senior guard Marcus Tyus has been particularly effective in the second half, shooting.529 (46-of-87) from the field compared to.391 (34-of-87) in the first. Tyus is bolstered by.526 (20-of-38) 3-point shooting in his second-half performances, an improvement from.375 (18-of-48) in the opening half. Tyus Joins 1,000 Point Club He entered the 2016-17 season having not played a game since Feb. 7, 2015, but senior guard Marcus Tyus is now the most recent Omaha player to join the prestigious 1,000-Point Club. Over four active seasons (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17), he has amassed 1,044 career points to rank 32nd in school history, spurred most recently by a 34-point performance Jan. 7 at South Dakota State. Tyus is the 37th UNO player to reach the 1,000 points milestone. Omaha s active career leader for 3-pointers, Tyus moved up to 12th on the Mavericks career triples chart at SDSU. His career total of 130 passed Denny Johnston (2004-08), who had 125. Next on the list is Troy Kloewer (1993-97), who had 131. History-Making Hollins Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins is Omaha s all-time single-season steals leader, and he joined the top 20 for career steals on Feb. 6, 2016. Hollins moved up to fourth in school history Jan. 4 vs. Fort Wayne, passing Devin Patterson (2013-16), who had 175. Hollins now has a career total of 181 swipes, needing just 10 to tie Calvin Kapels (2002-06) for the school record of 191. Hollins 196 assists last season were the second-highest single-season mark in school history. He broke into the alltime top 20 for assists Nov. 19 vs. Rice and is now 10th with 303, having passed Richard Jones (1993-96), who had 299. Hollins now needs eight more to tie for ninth on the list, which would match Patterson, who had 311. Hollins had one of his finest performances of the 2015-16 season vs. Fort Wayne on Jan. 16, 2016, finishing with 23 points, a season-high 13 assists and a season-best eight steals alongside five rebounds. He claimed Omaha s singleseason steals record (then 81) in the game, clearing the previous mark of 80 set by Vernon Manning (1981-82). Hollins was also the first Omaha player in six years to record a double-double off points and assists. Tracking Tre Shawn After 30 blocked shots to his credit as a freshman and 35 more as a sophomore, junior forward Tre Shawn Thurman made his way into the top 10 in school history with 65 career blocks. Midway into the 2016-17 campaign, the Omaha Central product now sits at sixth on the list with 80, having passed Matt Hagerbaumer (2010-14), who had 79. His next hurdle is Levy Jones (2003-05), who had 83. Thurman most recently inked his name in the Omaha record books for career rebounds, joining the top 20 in school history on Dec. 21 at Pitt. He currently sits at 18th on the list with 514 boards, having passed Sam Singleton (1962-66), who had 508. Thurman's next target is Bill Haas (1964-67), who grabbed 518. Thurman is also on the brink of becoming the second Maverick this season to join the 1,000 Point Club. With 949 points to his credit entering this weekend, he needs 51 more to become the 38th 1,000-point scorer in school history. Solid at the Stripe Omaha has been strong at the free throw line this season, hitting at a.752 clip. The Mavericks have shot over.700 12 times, and Jan. 7 at South Dakota State went an unblemished 21-of-21 at the line in the second half. Earlier this year, Omaha fired at over.900 in back-to-back games --.923 (24-of-26) Nov. 26 at Eastern Michigan and.926 (25-of-27) Dec. 30 at Cal State Fullerton. The last time a Maverick team shot.900 or better at the stripe in backto-back games was 2007-08 vs. York College (.926 on Jan. 12, 2008) and Nebraska-Kearney (.900 on Jan. 14, 2008). Marcus Making His Mark Senior guard Marcus Tyus tallied his third 30-point game of the season Jan. 7 at South Dakota State. Previously, Tyus had a career-high 37 points Dec. 10 vs. Montana State, which tied for the sixth-best scoring performance in school history with Calvin Kapels vs. St. Cloud State (Jan. 26, 2006) and Devin Patterson at Duquesne (March 16, 2016). Tyus also dropped 33 at USC on Nov. 13.

2016-17 OMAHA MEN S BASKETBALL 5 Action Jackson Sophomore guard Zach Jackson is second on the team for rebounding with 5.1 boards per game and third for scoring with 11.6 points per game this season. In Omaha s season opener Nov. 12 at UCSB, he scored 14 points and pulled down a career-best and eight rebounds and has matched the rebounding performance twice more -- Nov. 15 at Kansas State and Dec. 3 at Iowa. Jackson also put up a career-high 21 points against the Hawkeyes, and he has scored in double figures in all but four games this season. Jackson started 24 games in his freshman campaign in 2015-16, averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. A native of Wichita, Kan., he was the first Omaha freshman to start a season opener since CJ Carter in 2011. Jackson also had the distinction of making the first basket in Baxter Arena history, nailing a jumper 52 seconds into last year s season opener vs. UC Santa Barbara. Feelin Hahn, Hahn, Hahn Sophomore forward Mitch Hahn is averaging 9.8 points per game, the most of any Maverick coming off the bench. The Fremont, Neb., native had an impressive debut Nov. 12 at UC Santa Barbara, leading all scorers with 15 points in reserve with five 3-pointers. Hahn was the first Maverick to knock down at least five triples in a season opener since former Maverick Jeff Martin did so in 2009-10. Hahn scored a season-high 18 points Dec. 18 vs. Cal State Fullerton, helped by his 10-of-10 showing at the free throw line. He is also third on the team for threes made this season with 20. Double the Trouble, Double the Fun Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins (20 points/10 assists) and junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman (15 points/12 rebounds) both had double-doubles Dec. 18 vs. Cal State Fullerton. It marked the first time this season UNO has had two double-doubles in a single game. In 2015-16, Omaha had three such showings, with double-doubles from two Mavericks vs. Fort Wayne (Jan. 16, 2016), vs. Simpson (Dec. 16, 2015) and vs. Eastern Michigan (Dec. 1, 2015). Looking to the Bench Omaha s bench outscored Buena Vista s bench 60-28 on Nov. 22. The last time the Mavericks bench enjoyed a scoring margin of 30 or more was March 1, 2014, when UNO outscored Fort Wayne s reserves 59-26. The 2016-17 Mavericks are averaging 25.6 points per game by bench scorers, the highest of any Derrin Hansencoached team. The next highest average is courtesy of the 2013-14 squad, which had 26.5 bench points per game. Erickson Granted Sixth Year of Eligibility by NCAA Senior guard Kyler Erickson was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA to play in 2016-17, it was announced in May. The waiver was granted after the university submitted a request for an extension of eligibility beyond Erickson s five-year window. Erickson began his collegiate career at Northwest Missouri State, redshirting in 2011-12 before playing the 2012-13 season. Upon transferring to UNO, he sat out the 2013-14 season in compliance with the NCAA s one-year residency requirement for transfers. Erickson then played in 2014-15 and 2015-16 for the Mavericks, moving into a starting role in the middle of the latter season. As a senior at Millard South High School, Erickson had witnessed a shooting in his school s administration office on Jan. 5, 2011. Nearly a year and a half later, he suffered the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and since undergoing successful treatment, he has become a vocal advocate encouraging others to seek assistance for mental health issues. Erickson runs a website, KylerErickson.com, that details his story, and his videos have garnered widespread attention with over 120,000 views in 114 countries. Erickson s message of turning tragedy into testimony encourages people in all walks of life to confront mental health challenges they may be facing. For his dedication to community service, Erickson was named to the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works team. Over the last five years, he has served as a speaker, member and volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and spoken to over 20 elementary, middle and high schools in Omaha and San Diego. He also starred in an episode of The Harbor TV, a hope-filled homeroom program for high schools across the country and has mentored several mentally ill students and residents in the Omaha area. Additionally, Erickson has volunteered with multiple local charities, organizations and schools. Stacking Up Nationally As a team, Omaha ranks ninth nationally for free throws made (324), 17th for free throw attempts (431), 38th for scoring offense (81.8), 39th for free throw percentage (.752) and 44th for total steals (127). Individually, senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins is the nation's leader for total steals (54), third for steals per game (3.2), seventh for total assists (107) and 14th for assists per game (6.3). Individually, senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins leads the way in steals (54) and assists (107) for the second straight season. Tre'Shawn Thurman is also first for defensive rebounds (105). Compared to the Opposition Over the first 17 contests of the 2016-17 season, Omaha has: More or equal field goals made compared to its opponent five times More or equal 3-point field goals made compared to its opponent seven times More or equal free throws made compared to its opponent 12 times More or equal rebounds compared to its opponent seven times More or equal assists compared to its opponent six times More or equal steals compared to its opponent eight times Fewer or equal turnovers compared to its opponent seven times More or equal blocks compared to its opponent seven times Man of Steal In 2015-16, Tra-Deon Hollins led the nation in both total steals (127) and steals per game (3.97), well ahead of the second-ranked player, Hameed Ali of Texas A&M Corpus Christi (88; 2.67). Hollins finished one steal shy of averaging a full 4.0 steals per game, and he was the first player in more than a decade to tally 3.5 steals per game while appearing in at least 25 contests. If Hollins can surpass last year s steals output in his senior campaign, he can become just the 12th Division I player to average 4.0 steals or more for a season. The last time it happened was 2002, when Alabama A&M s Desmond Cambridge averaged a nation-leading 5.52 spg and Providence s John Linehan had 4.48 spg. Hollins has long been regarded for his defensive prowess and is no stranger to pacing the nation in steals, as he led all players in the NJCAA with 4.1 swipes per game while playing at Central CC in 2013-14. The Division I Years The Mavericks have led the Summit League in scoring three consecutive years, averaging 79.9 ppg in 2013-14, 76.8 ppg in 2014-15 and 85.3 ppg in 2015-16, respectively. Hollins, Erickson and Thurman -- all three Omaha natives -- tote previous starting experience, as Hollins and Thurman started every game in 2015-16, and Erickson got the nod in the last seven games of the year. Fly, Eagles, Fly Omaha's starting lineup includes senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins and junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman, who were previously teammates at Omaha Central High School. The duo played three years together at Central, winning a trio of state championships (2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13).

2016-17 OMAHA MEN S BASKETBALL 7 Hollins and Thurman are the first pair of former high school teammates to start a game at UNO together since John Karhoff and Caleb Steffensmeier (Creighton Prep) in 2013-14. Transfer Trio Brings Past Division I Experience Omaha s roster includes a trio of transfers with previous Division I playing experience with junior guard Daniel Norl, sophomore forward Mitch Hahn and senior guard Renard Suggs. Norl began his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky in 2014-15, appearing in 11 games in reserve for the Colonels. Last season, he played at Mineral Area CC, where he averaged 10.5 points per game and shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent at the free throw line. Hahn, a Fremont, Neb. native, sat out in 2015-16 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules after playing his freshman season at Holy Cross. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game and shot.447 from the field. Suggs joins the Mavericks after playing at Washington State in 2015-16. He appeared in 25 games for the Cougars, averaging 5.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists over 12.6 minutes per game minutes per game. Suggs scored in double figures in the first three games of the season and posted a career-high 14 points off the bench in WSU s upset of No. 25 UCLA. He will sit out in 2016-17 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. Robinson s Ready Freshman guard KJ Robinson is the only true freshman on Omaha s roster this season, and he comes armed with a list of prep accomplishments. At Blue Springs South High School in Blue Springs, Mo., Robinson received a threestar rating from Rivals and helped the Jaguars win their first state championship in 2015. He was a three-time firstteam all-conference, all-area and all-district selection over his career and earned all-state accolades as a senior after averaging 25.0 points per game. Additionally, Robinson played AAU ball for Team YOBO, coached by former Oklahoma State standout Victor Williams. Robinson made his career debut for Omaha in the Nov. 12 season opener at UC Santa Barbara, finishing with seven points on 2-of-3 shooting off the bench. In UNO s win over Buena Vista on Nov. 22, he tallied a season-high 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting with three 3-pointers. Norl Notches in Double Figures Junior guard Daniel Norl, a transfer from Mineral Area CC who began his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky in 2014-15, put together his first double-figure scoring effort vs. Rice on Nov. 19. The Clarksville, Tenn., native posted a season-best 11 points off the bench vs. Rice, which also marked his highest-scoring Division I game. Norl s previous Division I high was eight points for EKU vs. Cincinnati Clermont College on Nov. 22, 2014. Hitting the Century Mark Omaha hit the century mark for the second time this season in its 101-93 win at South Dakota State on Jan. 7. Over the 12-year Derrin Hansen era, the Mavericks are 20-2 when scoring 100 points or more in a game. MAVERICKS VS. Omaha s 2015-16 season marked its first with full Division I postseason eligibility, and the Mavericks delivered an 18-14 (10-6 Summit League) record and a third-place finish in the Summit League standings. Tra-Deon Hollins earned a spot on the All-Summit First Team and All-Newcomer Team and was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and Transfer of the Year. Patterson and Jake White were both named to the All-Summit Second Team, and Patterson added NABC All-District Second Team honors. Before Omaha s move to NCAA Division I in 2011-12, Hansen guided the Mavericks to two Division II Tournament appearances and conference championships in the MIAA (2010) and the NCC (2008). Hansen has coached five players to all-region plaudits, and one All-America honorable mention. Twelve of his players have won a combined 20 all-conference awards, with eight All-Summit, eight All-MIAA and four All-NCC. OMAHA IN THE HANSEN ERA Season... What Makes Up the Mavericks UNO returns 45 percent of its offensive production from last season, as this year s returners accounted for 1,216 of the Mavericks 2,729 points. The returners are also credited for 51 percent (581) of last season s 1,132 rebounds. Junior forward Tre Shawn Thurman and senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins are UNO s leading returning scorers after averaging 13.9 and 12.5 points per game, respectively, both of which ranked among the top 15 scorers in the Summit League. Hollins also led the league in steals (127) and assists (196). Senior guard Marcus Tyus, who last saw action in 2014-15, averaged 13.0 points per game to rank 12th in the league that year. Hollins played the most minutes in 2015-16 of any returner on this year s roster, averaging 32.4 minutes per game. UNO s 2016-17 roster has four seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, two redshirt freshmen and one true freshman. The Mavericks hail from eight different states. Six are from Nebraska and three are from Minnesota, while Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Montana and Colorado are all represented once on the roster. Omaha Overseas Four former Mavericks have gone on to play professionally overseas in the last two years: forward Mike Rostampour (Slovakia), guards CJ Carter (Macedonia) and Devin Patterson (Lithuania) and guard/forward Randy Reed II (Tunisia). Carter and Rostampour, both 2014-15 graduates, won league championships with their respective teams last season. Carter s MZT Skopje Aerodrom team captured the Prva Liga title, while Rostampour s BC Prievidza squad won the Slovak Extraliga crown. Two members of the 2015-16 graduating class also signed professional contracts after last season. Patterson joined the BC Šiauliai club, which plays in the Lithuanian Basketball League and Baltic Basketball League, while Reed signed with Jeunesse Sportive d El Mensah in Tunisia s Ligue 1. 2015-16 Mavericks: The Comeback Kids Omaha overcame a double-digit deficit for a win five times last season, including down 21 at IUPUI (Jan. 9).
