Great Hockey. Guaranteed. PRESS RELEASE Noah Smith Director of Media Relations Hockey East Association 591 North Ave #2 Wakefield, MA 01880 Phone: (781) 245-2122 nsmith@hockeyeastonline.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 23, 2006 WEEKLY RELEASE #16 BC BUILDS LEAD WITH BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS UMass Matt Anderson caps dramatic win at UNH with overtime goal As expected, not very many goals were scored in this past weekend s series between Boston College and Vermont. The two hottest goaltenders in Hockey East were going head-to-head, and BC s Cory Schneider came away the victor, shutting out Vermont in back-to-back games. That makes it five shutouts in league play for Schneider this season, a new Hockey East record. The Eagle offense was led by Brian Boyle and Chris Collins, who each had a hand in all five BC goals against Vermont goaltender Joe Fallon in the two-game series. BC has now won eight straight league games, and boasts an eight-point lead in the Hockey East standings. Boston University has won five straight, thanks to a weekend sweep of Merrimack. Kenny Roche notched a hat trick and one assist to lead Friday s 5-3 win. John Curry did the honors Saturday by stopping all 20 shots he faced in the rematch. Rookie Brandon Yip had five assists on 10 BU goals on the weekend. Despite a sub-.500 record, UMass continues to put the heat on ranked teams and did it again with a spirited split vs. UNH. Goaltender Gabe Winer stopped 75 of 80 shots faced against the Wildcats, but was edged by Jeff Pietrasiak s 27 saves in Friday s 3-1 UNH victory, the last goal an empty-netter. Winer got the win Saturday when teammate Matt Anderson capped a four-point weekend with a goal with just four ticks left in overtime. Providence and Maine swapped wins in Orono as the Friars tagged the Black Bears with a 4-0 shutout Friday, only to drop a 5-2 decision in the rematch. PC s Torry Gajda set up two scores in each contest. Northeastern continued to claw for points with its fifth tie of the season Saturday at Lowell, as goaltender Adam Geragosian stopped all 12 shots in the third period and five in overtime. At the other end, Peter Vetri was equally spectacular, totalling 63 saves on 66 shots in the two game series, gaining a win and a tie. TEAM NOTES Boston College: BC has killed all 25 opponent power plays over the last five games... BC has eight straight wins in league play, the most for any Hockey East team since Maine and UNH did it in the 1998-99 season. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 31-6 in that span... Chris Collins 14 goals in league play matches the total of last year s Hockey East leaders. Boston University: BU has won five straight games and seven of the last eight... Freshmen accounted for eight of the 12 points versus Merrimack Saturday... After scoring five or more goals on just three previous occasions this season, BU has five goals in each of its last three games. Despite giving up three power play goals on the weekend to the Friars, Maine still has the nation's best penalty kill at 91.9 percent... Maine has four players with 20+ points this season. University of Massachusetts: UMass win at UNH s Whittemore Center was their first there since March 2, 2001, and just the second all-time. UMass Lowell: Danny O Brien registered his second straight game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Northeastern Friday. He has five goals and seven points over his last four games... Rookie Mark Roebothan was a factor in two of UML s four goals on the weekend, setting up the game-winning goal on Friday and scoring the first marker on Saturday... Defenseman Cleve Kinley missed the first game of his collegiate career Saturday due to an injury sustained Friday. Merrimack College: Sophomore Derek Pallardy notched his first career goal, one assist and a +2 rating Friday vs. BU... Merrimack rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game on Friday night. Northeastern University: NU was not whistled for any penalties in the first period of Saturday's game at UMass Lowell, marking just the second time this season that that has happened... NU's last five goals have been scored by freshmen. Freshmen have scored 20 of NU's 40 goals this season... The Huskies recently ended a scoring drought of 211:05, their longest since the 1970-71 season. Providence College: The Friars recorded their first ever shutout victory at Alfond Arena on Friday.
