TBA The Pittsburg State University basketball team will continue a busy week of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action Wednesday (Dec. 30) by traveling to Maryville, Mo., to face Northwest Missouri State University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CST) at Bearcat Arena. Following Wednesday s action, the Gorillas will return to John Lance Arena to host Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Jan. 2) at 7:30 p.m. The RECORDs Pitt State brings a 6-5 overall record and an 0-4 MIAA mark into Wednesday s action. The Gorillas suffered an 83-60 setback to unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Central Missouri in their most recent action Monday (Dec. 28). NW Missouri State is 5-5 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play. The Bearcats are seeking to halt a four-game slide. NWMSU dropped a pair of games at the High Desert Classic at Las Vegas, Nev., in its most recent action Dec. 18-19. Missouri Southern has compiled a 7-3 overall record and a 1-2 MIAA mark, heading into the Lions Dec. 30 match-up against Missouri Western. The Lions claimed a 101-62 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith in their most recent action on Dec. 21. The Coaches Pittsburg State s Gene Iba is in his 15th and final season leading the Gorillas. Iba (Tulsa, 63), who has led Pitt State to the school s first five NCAA Tournament appearances (1997-99, 2005, 2007) and an MIAA Championship (1999) during a decorated 15-year tenure, announced on Sept. 16 his intention to retire following the 2009-10 campaign. He coaches in his 30th, and final, season as a collegiate coach with a 484-362 career mark, including a 258-159 record at Pitt State. Iba has a 17-18 record against NW Missouri State and a 14-16 mark against Missouri Southern. Ben McCollum is in his first season leading the Bearcats. McCollum (NW Missouri State, 03) has compiled a 5-5 record in his short tenure leading his alma mater. This will be McCollum s first meeting vs. Pitt State. Robert Corn is in his 22nd season leading his alma mater. Corn (MSSU, 78) has compiled a 317-262 record leading the Lions, heading into Wednesday s game vs. Western. SERIES HISTORY Wednesday s action will mark the 114th meeting between Pitt State and NW Missouri State in a series that dates all the way back to the 1926 season. The Gorillas hold a 63-50 advantage in the series, but the Bearcats have a 35-19 edge in games played at Maryville, including four straight wins and 12 of 13 victories. Last year, the two teams split the season series with Pitt State claiming a 63-61 win in Pittsburg on Dec. 31 and NWMSU taking a 75-72 decision at Maryville on Feb. 7. Saturday s action will mark the 85th meeting between the Gorillas and the Lions in a series that dates back to the 1968 season Southern s first year as a four-year college. The Lions hold a slight 44-40 advantage in the series, but the Gorillas hold a 27-14 edge in games played in Pittsburg, including four wins in the last five seasons at John Lance Arena. Last year, the two squads split the season series with each team defending its home floor. Southern claimed an 88-76 win over Pitt State at Joplin on Jan. 3, before the Gorillas countered with a 76-58 victory in Pittsburg on Feb. 11. PITT STATE ON THE ROAD Pitt State has posted a 63-94 (.401) record in road games during Coach Iba s 15-year tenure. The Gorillas are 4-12 (.500) on the road against NW Missouri State during Coach Iba s tenure. PITT STATE AT JOHN LANCE ARENA Pitt State has posted a 342-160 (.681) record at John Lance Arena, since the facility opened on Dec. 4, 1971. The Gorillas, who are 203-71 (.741) at home since the start of the 1990 season, have a 786-321 (.710) all-time home record during the 101-year history of the Pitt State program. SCOUTING THE GORILLAS Senior guard Spencer Magana and senior forward Rodney Grace are leading the Gorillas in scoring to date. Magana (6-4, 192) is averaging 17.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in a team-leading 30.1 minutes per game. The Dewey, Okla., native has connected on 33 of 74 3-point field goals for a 44.6 percentage. Magana scored a game-high 21 points in the Gorillas 63-62 win over Missouri S&T, including three treys in the final 1:17 to help Pitt State rally from a nine-point second half deficit. On Dec. 21, Mangana hit four 3-pointers and went 10-for-10 from the free throw line to score a season-high 30 points against Benedictine. Grace is contributing 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to date. The Omaha, Neb., native is shooting 54.5 percent (61 of 112) from the field. Grace s best game of the season came the last time out against Benedictine when he scored 23 points on eight of 14 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds as the Gorillas beat the Ravens 96-76 on Dec. 21. True freshman forward JaVon McGee is averaging 7.2 points and 5.9 rebounds in only 17.0 minutes per game. McGee, from Kansas City, Mo., is averaging 15.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in the Gorillas last two games (prior to Wednesday). As a team, the Gorillas are shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from 3-point range and 66.4 percent from the free throw line to date. SCOUTING THE BEARCATs NW Missouri State has four players scoring in double figures to date: senior guard Girod Adams (17.0 ppg), junior forward Elijah Allen (15.3 ppg), freshman guard DeShaun Cooper (13.5 ppg) and senior guard Edriss Floyd (13.3 ppg). Allen is pulling down a team-leading 5.3 rebounds per game, while Cooper has dished out a team-high 50 assists (5.0 apg). Junior forward Maciej Ustarbowski, who averages 7.5 points per game, is shooting a team-high 56.4 percent from the field. As a team, NWMSU is shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from 3-point range and 72.7 percent from the free throw line. SCOUTING THE LIONs All five members of Missouri Southern s starting five are averaging in double figures on the season. Sophomore guard/forward Jason Adams leads the squad with a 16.5-point scoring average, including a 17.3-point average in MIAA play. Junior guard Skyler Bowlin (11.8 ppg), senior guard Mariun Price (11.1 ppg), sophomore center Keane Thomann (10.9 ppg) and senior forward DaRell Crittendon (10.0 ppg) also score in double figures for the Lions. The starting quintet combine to generate 71 percent of the Lions offense, accounting for 60.3 points of Southern s 84.6-point scoring output. Adams leads the squad in rebounding, averaging 6.2 boards per game, while Bowling leads the team in assists (6.6 apg). Thomann is shooting a team-best 61.6 percent from the field, converting 45 of 63 field goal attempts. As a team, Southern is shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from 3-point range and 75.4 percent from the free throw line on the year.
