TBA The Pittsburg State University basketball team will resume Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play after a week off by traveling to Emporia, Kan., to face Emporia State University on Saturday (Jan. 9). Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CST) at William L. White Auditorium. The RECORDs Pitt State brings a 7-6 overall record and a 1-5 MIAA mark into Saturday s action. The Gorillas halted a two-game losing streak with a dramatic 67-65 home win over Missouri Southern in their last action on Jan. 2. Senior forward Rodney Grace followed his own missed shot, and, after a failed tip-in attempt by teammate Spencer Magana, tapped in the game-winning basket just ahead of the final buzzer to help Pitt State beat the Lions. Emporia State is 6-8 overall and 2-5 in MIAA competition. The Hornets are looking to snap a three-game losing streak all to MIAA opponents. In their most recent action, ESU fell, 75-62, on the road against MSSU on Jan. 6. The Coaches Pittsburg State s Gene Iba is in his 15th and final season leading the Gorillas. Iba (Tulsa, 63), who has led Pitt State to the school s first five NCAA Tournament appearances (1997-99, 2005, 2007) and an MIAA Championship (1999) during a decorated 15-year tenure, announced on Sept. 16 his intention to retire following the 2009-10 campaign. He coaches in his 30th, and final, season as a collegiate coach with a 485-363 career mark, including a 259-160 record at Pitt State. Iba has a 17-9 career record against Emporia State. David Moe is in his ninth season leading the Hornets. Moe (Texas Lutheran, 86) has compiled a 138-105 record in his tenure, with an 8-8 mark against the Gorillas. SERIES HISTORY Saturday s game will mark the 177th all-time meeting between Pitt State and Emporia State in a series that dates all the way back to the 1917 season. The Hornets hold a slight 89-87 (.494) edge in the series, including a 52-37 advantage games played at Emporia. Pitt State has enjoyed moderate success against ESU on the Hornets home floor, as the Gorillas have posted an 8-4 record in the last 12 trips to White Auditorium. Last year, Emporia State avenged the Gorillas season sweep the year before by winning both games in 2009. In Pittsburg, the Hornets edged the Gorillas, 102-100, in a triple overtime thriller on Jan. 10. ESU then scored an 84-74 win at Emporia on Feb. 18. vs. EMPORIA STATE JAN. 9, 2010 1
