Brittany Woods Fall 2017 Sports Guide

Fall Sports General Information 2017-18 School Year Athletes must have an Athletics Registration Packet filled out completely and turned in to be able to participate in practice or tryouts. Game schedules/meets are not set yet. Once the practices start, your child will receive a practice/game schedule. Please try to plan appointments around them if possible. Athletes must be at the practice before the game/meet to be eligible to participate, unless excused by the coach. ATHLETES MUST BE PASSING ALL CLASSES TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN GAMES/MEETS. Sports Offered: Students may choose one sport each season. Fall Sports Start Dates & Practice Information 2017-18 School Year BW TACKLE FOOTBALL TRYOUTS - Tuesday, August 22 from 3-5 - Tryouts will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for two weeks (August 22, 23, 24 & Aug. 29, 30, 31) - Tryouts and practices will be held at Brittany Woods - All levels are welcome. Practices will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 3-5, with games on Saturdays - The league is not set. FOOTBALL PARENT MEETING - Thursday, Aug. 24 at 5:00 pm in the BW Gym, immediately following practice. XC PRACTICE (CROSS COUNTRY) - Thursday, Aug. 24 from 3-4:15 - For Boys & Girls - Practices are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays from 3-4:15 - Once after school activities begin there will be a 4:15 activity bus for transportation home - The girls and boys run in separate races, with 3-4 meets. 3 DAY CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS - Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 3-5 - Tryouts will be Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday (Aug. 29, 30 & 31) - Practices will be on Wednesdays from 3-5 to prepare for the Homecoming Parade (Oct. 14) - After the parade, Cheerleaders will resume practices in January, to cheer for the BW Basketball Team. ($40.00 fee) BOYS & GIRLS SOCCER TRYOUTS - Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 3-5 - Tryouts are Tuesday & Thursday (Aug. 29 & 31) - Normal practice days are Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5 - Soccer has 8 games which are usually on Saturdays - Games are not set (Practice times could change with the new coach) BASEBALL - Tuesday, September 5 from 3-5 - Practices will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5 - Open to boys & girls (girls may also attend for softball skills) - Games are in the spring. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS - Thursday, September 7 from 3-5 - Tryouts will be Thursday, Tuesday, & Thursday (Sept. 7, 12 & 14) - Normal practice days will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5, and some Wednesdays - Games will be on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays with 7-8 games. ARCHERY for BOYS & GIRLS - Will start in October - More info to come - Practices will be on Saturdays from 8:30 to 11:30 am - Practices will be in the small gym at BW - Archery will participate in competitions. BOYS SWIMMING - First year for Boys Swimming - More Info to come Practice at U-City HS GIRLS TENNIS - First year for Girls Tennis - More info to come - Practice at Kaufman Park

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE PLAYING SPORTS AT BRITTANY WOODS MIDDLE SCHOOL 1. Fall Sports are all open to grades 6, 7, & 8 (Some sports have try-outs and some sports welcome larger numbers. Fall sports for Brittany Woods include: Boys & Girls Cross Country, Tackle Football, Volleyball, Girls & Boys Soccer, Boys Swimming, Girls Tennis, Baseball, & Cheerleading. Archery will start in October. (Underlined sports have tryouts) 2. Before trying out or playing a sport at BW, students must have a completed sports packet, which includes an up to date physical, parent s signatures, along with the emergency contact information and proof of insurance information. 3. If your child s physical is due in Sept., Oct. or Nov. please know that physicals are only good for one calendar year. If their physical expires they will not be allowed to participate until they get a new physical. Dr. Bradley will be at BW after school on August 23, 24, 30, & 31 to give sports physicals - The cost is $15.00 cash. - Sign up with Ms. Wenneker. 4. If you do not have medical insurance for your child, we have information on Kid Guard Insurance. It is $15.00. The policy covers your child during school sponsored sports or activities. (It is accident coverage only while school is in session during regular school term and during school sponsored activities) Please see Ms. Wenneker if you would like more information on Kid Guard Insurance. 5. Student athletes should wait until the walkers are dismissed and then get their items out of their hallway lockers and then go to the gym to get dressed for practice. Athletes will not be able to go back to their hallway lockers after practice, although they will be able to go to their locker, inside the locker rooms. PLEASE GET A LOCK FOR THE LOCKER ROOM so your clothes and valuables can be locked during practice, games, and during PE Class. A lock will be provided if your child would like to borrow one from the PE Dept. - The lock is expected to be returned at the end of the year - If a lock is lost there will be a $5.00 fee charged 6. Cost to play sports: There is no up-front cost to play sports at BW, except for Cheerleading. For the sports that play games or have meets, a uniform will be checked out to your son/daughter. Uniforms should be returned within one week of the last game/meet. Students will be charged for lost or damaged uniforms (Field Hockey will usually purchases team t-shirts). Field Hockey, Soccer & Football Athletes need to purchase personal items that pertain to their sports such as shin guards, mouth guards, jock strap and cup, or sports bra. Participants in field sports may choose to purchase cleats for that sport and running shoes for XC.

7. Practice clothing: Jeans, boots & flips are not acceptable for practice clothing. Students should wear clothing that is loose and easy to move in for practice. Shorts, sweats, t-shirts, and tennis shoes are suggested. The color of practice clothes does not matter. For outdoor sports dress appropriately for the weather. (Keep clothes school appropriate.) 8. Students should have separate clothes for PE Class. Students will have PE every day and need to be prepared to dress out every day, Monday through Thursday. Students do not dress out on Fridays. - It is our written assignment day - Students should bring a pen or pencil to class on Fridays - Dress out clothes for PE Class is a white t-shirt, black sweats or shorts, and tennis shoes. ALL ATHLETES ARE REQUIRED TO DRESS & PARTICIPATE IN P.E. CLASS. 9. Girls & Boys Soccer is in the Clayton League (8 games) c. Cross Country - MSIL League (3-5 meets) d. Volleyball - MSIL League (7-8 games) e. Baseball - MSIL League (4 games in the spring) Baseball will practice in the fall and work on their fundamentals. (12-14 practice days) In the spring they will pick up practice again and play 4 games. f. Cheerleading - Walk in parades & cheer for the Boys Basketball Team (8-9 games) g. Boys Swimming - MSIL League (First year more info to come) h. Girls Tennis - MSIL League (First year more info to come) i. Archery - If student s scores are good enough they can move on in the competitions 12. ISS & OSS Information: If a student receives an (ISS) In School Suspension during the season, they will not be allowed to go to one game/meet. The student will still be required to practice with the team, unless otherwise arranged with parents, administration and coaches. If a student receives an (OSS) Out of School Suspension as of the first official practice day, they will miss one game/meet. During the period of game/meets, if a student receives an OSS they will miss 2 games/meets. During the time period that you are out of school you will not be allowed to participate or attend any games/meets until your suspension is complete.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON FALL SPORTS: TACKLE FOOTBALL - The league is not set yet. Tryouts will be at BW on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for two weeks (August 22, 23, 24 & Aug. 29, 30, 31) Practices are on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 3-5 at BW. Games are usually on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays. Getting to and from practice is your responsibility, however, there will be a 5:00 PM Sports Activity bus for student transportation. (The 5:00 PM Bus will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays, but will have limited stops) For the games, players will meet the coaches at BW and ride the bus to the games. Students will ride the bus back to Brittany Woods after the games to turn in their equipment. Parents can pick up their child at Brittany Woods after the game. There may be a League Registration Meeting the boys will have to attend. (TBA) There is no cost to play football at BW unless your child loses or damages the equipment assigned to him. Shoulder pads, practice pants with pads, practice jersey, helmet with face guard, game pants with pads and game jersey will be issued. Students will need to bring the following: mouth guard, practice shorts and t-shirt to wear under their pads, a jockstrap and cup (per league rules) and rubber cleats are suggested. Students should wait until the walkers are dismissed, go to their hall lockers and then to the gym to get dressed out for practice, which will be held at the BW field. Practices will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5. Baseball will meet 12-14 days for practice in the fall. In the spring, Baseball will practice and play games for 4-5 weeks. Dress out in shorts or sweats, t-shirt and tennis shoes for practices & games. (rubber cleats are suggested) Your child may bring a glove or bat. Equipment will be provided for practices & games. Saturday morning practices will be held 8:30-11:30 AM. You do not have to come the whole time. Drop in for whatever time slot works best. Students should not wear clothing with strings. No special equipment is needed and all will be supplied by program, unless students want to purchase a bow. (If students buy a bow it must meet NASP requirements.) We plan to host a regional tournament in December and hope to go to go a state qualifying tournament. No experience necessary! GIRLS & BOYS SOCCER - Girls practice and play games separately from the boys. The students should wait until the walkers are dismissed and go to their hall lockers and then to the gym to get dressed out for practice, which will be held at the BW field. Dress out and meet your coach for attendance inside the gym first. Practices will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5. (Practice times may vary with the new girls coach) Getting to and from practice is your responsibility, however, there will be a 5:00 PM Sports Activity bus for student transportation (The bus will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays but will have limited stops). Soccer will play in the Clayton League and have 8 games, which are usually on Saturdays. For games, players and managers will meet the coaches at BW and will ride a bus to the games. Parents can sign their child out after the game and take their child home or students will ride the bus back to Brittany Woods and get a ride from there or walk home. A Clayton League Parent permission form will need to be signed by each player s parent/guardian. Students will need to bring practice clothes: t-shirt, shorts or sweats, and tennis shoes and /or rubber cleats and shin guards. (Cleats are not mandatory but help with traction.) Your child will be issued a soccer jersey and shorts. There is no cost unless your child loses or damages their uniform. Keep an eye on when the weather changes and gets cool and be sure to dress in layers. Athletes may want to bring a water bottle. The Girls Soccer Head Coach is Josie Johnston (josiej76@hotmail.com) The Boys Soccer Head Coach is Larry Schulz. (lschulz@ucityschools.org) CHEERLEADING - There will be 3 days of Cheerleading tryouts. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, Aug. 29, 30 & 31. After tryouts, Fall Cheerleading practices will be on Wednesdays from 3-5 to practice for the homecoming parade. (Oct. 14) After the parade, the Cheerleaders will be off until January. In January they will practice and cheer for the BW Basketball Team. Cheerleaders will have a one-time non-refundable fee of $40.00. (This money will be used for the girl s bows, snacks, face paint, socks, replace items, and etc throughout the season.) Coach Hickman is looking to keep 16 girls along with a possibility of 4 alternates. Felecia Hickman is the Cheer Coach. (fhickman@ucityschools.org) GIRLS VOLLEYBALL - Practices will be Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-5 and some Wednesdays. A practice/game schedule will be given to the girls to bring home. VB plays in the MSIL League and has 8 games. The games are not set yet, but are usually on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Players, managers, and coaches will ride together on a bus to the games. Parents can sign their child out after the game and take their child home or students will ride the bus back to Brittany Woods and get a ride from there or walk home. Students will need to bring practice clothes: t-shirt, shorts or sweats, and tennis shoes. Your child will be issued a volleyball jersey, shorts, knee pads and socks. CROSS COUNTRY (XC) - Practice days are Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 3-4:15. Cross Country is long distance running. (All levels of fitness are welcome.) There will be 3-5 meets and they will jog/run 2 miles at the meet. The girls will run first at 4:15 followed by the boys. We will have 2 home meets at U-City which will be held at Heman Park. Meets are on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. XC is in the MSIL League. Students will ride a one way bus to Heman Park right after school and will need to get a ride or walk from there to get home. If the meet is away, students will ride a bus to the meet and parents can sign their child out and take their child home after the meet or they will ride the bus back to Brittany Woods and get a ride from there or walk home. Students will need to bring practice clothes: t-shirt, shorts or sweats, and tennis shoes. (If possible, get running shoes as they are lighter, have more support, and are better for your feet, and for running. Shoes such as Converse Chuck Taylors and high tops are not the best for running long distance.) Please dress according to the weather for practice and meets. It is suggested your child bring a water bottle. The Girl s XC Coach is to be announced The Boys XC Coach is J. R. Robinson (jrobinson@ucityschools.org) BOYS SWIMMING - This is the first year we are offering swimming. (The boys swim in the fall & the girls will swim in the winter) Practice days & times are not set. Practices will be at the HS pool. There will be more info to come. The coach is to be announced. GIRLS TENNIS - This is the first year we are offering tennis. (The girls will play tennis in the fall & the boys will play tennis in the spring) Practice days & times are not set. Practices will be at Kaufman Park. Athletes will walk with the Coach to the park for practice and then walk back to BW. There will be more info to come. The coach is to be announced.
