Matt Callahan matt@soccerplans.com ***Disclaimer*** One of the biggest mistakes beginning coaches make (and experienced coaches as well) is not understanding that CHILDREN ARE NOT LITTLE ADULTS. Children do not have the same physical, mental, and social abilities that adults do. When coaches don't take into the actual ability of their players and attempt to teach players techniques and/or tactical concepts that the players are not physically, cognitively, or socially ready to learn, this creates a frustrating experience for both the coach and the players. Included in this manual you will find information about what youth players are capable of doing physically and cognitively at the different ages. I would like to start by emphasizing that THESE ARE GUIDELINES! Every child is different and grows at a different rate. Typically, I've been told that a player can differ in ability in relation to their age by 3 years. For example, a child can be chronologically 8 but have the social ability of a 5 year old, the cognitive ability of a 7 year old, and the motor ability of an 11 year old. This can make running a practice for young players difficult. Well-designed practices allow all players to participate at an appropriate level and to be challenged at an appropriate level. Great soccer coaches take into consideration the general characteristics of their soccer players, tweak them based upon the actual level of their players, and design practices based upon what their players can do! Credit and Acknowledgments! I learned most of the ideas presented within through my attendance at the US Soccer and US Youth Soccer coaching education courses. Much of the information can be found by reading the "US Youth Soccer Player Development Model: A Player Centered Curriculum for US Youth Soccer Clubs" which was prepared by Sam Snow, the Director of Coaching for US Youth Soccer. I would highly recommend reading the document in its entirety. It can be downloaded at www.usyouthsoccer.org or the soccerplans.com website.

Characteristics of U6, U8, and U10 Soccer Players Children are not miniature adults! Youth soccer players do not have all the physical, cognitive, and social abilities that adult soccer players have. Developmentally appropriate activities take into consideration what players can actually do and base training around those abilities. These characteristics are from the US Youth Soccer Player Development Curriculum 1. All children differ (+/- up to 3 years), these are merely general characteristics! U6 Characteristics Short attention span o Get to activities right away = avoid long explanations of games (sometimes explain a few parts of a game, enough to get them going, and then stop the team later to add on) o In a physical activity setting with grass that can be pulled, other distractions, etc. you probably have about 15 seconds before kids are going to start to gaze off. Kids are individually orientated o That's an understatement o Most youth players have their name on their ball = it's theirs and they don't want to share o Kids don't want to pass the ball, they want to play with it and don't think giving it to someone else is fun. Psychologically easily bruised o Feedback should be positive o If you tell the players to find a partner they will find their "best friend" each time...if you have an odd number of players the same kid will be left out each time o Kids pick up on our reaction to winning AND losing. Eye hand and eye foot coordination is primitive o Players are limited on what they can actually do In practice some activities are designed to improve body awareness and coordination o Kids this age love to run around, jump, roll on the ground, etc - so let them! No sense of pace, players will go 100% until they reach exhaustion. U8 Characteristics Attention span is longer than a U6 layer but still not very long o Rather than 15 seconds you have about 20...use that extra five seconds wisely! SOME children will start to be interested in working with another kid (pairs) = primitive passing o The person they tend to want to work with is their best friend. Player C could be wide open but the player with the ball might try to pass it to their best friend Player B who has three people covering them. That's okay! Compliment them for being willing to pass the ball (maybe some of the other players will pick up on that and want to pass the ball) and as they get older/smarter they will figure out who to pass the ball to. SOME children become obsessed with the rules o "They touched the ball with their hands...they are cheating! U8 players are beginning to develop coordination Boys and girls at this age are still fairly even in terms of physical development. However, boys tend to like playing with boys and girls tend to like playing with girls. U10 Characteristics Memory ability develops o Players will remember games from one practice to the next so games can be repeated easier

o Players are more capable of learning techniques as they can remember what they are supposed to be doing Attention span increases quite a bit o Players can perform activities longer without getting bored so practices tend to have less activities. o Even though they can focus for longer doesn't mean coaches should be giving lectures. Abstract thought kicks in: A leads to B and B leads to C...necessary to play "soccer" Players begin to think like adults o Sometimes this is a good thing o Often U10 players need a reason to do something - Why are we doing this today, how does this fit into the big picture of becoming a better soccer player??? Players get the "team" concept but still struggle to make complex "team" decisions during a game Motor skills improve...a LOT! U10-U14 is the "Golden Age of Motor Learning" in which players are most capable of learning new motor movements. o Getting a good picture of how to do a technique is important. If you haven't played soccer, consider asking a player on the team to demonstrate that can already do the skill or bring in older players that can do the skill already. Some players are going to succeed solely based on their athletic ability. It is important to challenge them to use skill as for most people eventually everyone else catches up athletically (and then the player that relied only on athletic ability doesn't have the skill to succeed anymore). 1Us Youth Soccer Player Development Model: A Player-Centered Curriculum for US Youth Soccer Clubs. Developmental Philosophy Age Group Playing Time Starters Playing Different Positions Youth U6/U8 As equal as possible amongst all players Starters are picked on a rotational basis all players start an equal number of games throughout season (as equal as possible) U6/U8 players should be allowed to play freely and not asked to play a position. At restarts players can be asked to form a shape (triangle/diamond) but they shouldn t be expected to stay in that shape. Youth U10 As equal as possible amongst all players Starters are picked on a rotational basis all players start an equal number of games throughout season (as equal as possible) U10 teams that play 5v5+GK s will typically have a 3-2 (3 defenders, 2 attackers) formation or a 2-3. Players should spend equal time being an attacker and defender. Encourage GK play but don t force players to be a GK. U11 As equal as possible amongst all players Starters are picked on a rotational basis all players start an equal number of games throughout season (as equal as possible) Every player will rotate playing an attacking position and a defending position in every game. Players willing to play GK will be rotated throughout the year and may receive more playing time in games they play GK (for ½ the game). U12 As equal as possible amongst all players Starters are picked on a rotational basis all players start an equal number of games throughout season (as equal as possible) Every player will play an attacking and a defending position in each game but not necessarily equally. If the ability/preference of the players allows, players will play approximately 2/3 of the game in their best position (determined by coach) and 1/3 of the time in another position. Players willing to play GK will rotate throughout the season and may receive more playing time in the games they play GK for a half. U13 U14+ State League Teams Some players will begin to play more than others which may be influenced by the commitment to the team (attendance at practice/games) and skill level Players will play more than others Some players may begin to start more games than others. This will be based upon skill level and commitment to team (will be outlined by coach at pre-season parent meeting). The starting line-up for each game will be based upon player commitment and performance. Some players may start every game and others may not or may take turns starting depending upon their weekly performance in training. Players will begin to play a specific position. Players may still play other positions in various game situations (winning by a lot) but not necessarily in every game. Ideally a few players will begin to standout as future GK s. Players will play a specific position. In certain situations players may play other positions but they will typically have a specific role they will play on the team. Ideally the team will have two GK s.

Methods of Coaching A Coach s Toolkit 1,2 A soccer coach can "teach" in many different ways. The coach must decide which method is best to use at any particular time. Below are some common examples of when coaching takes place during a soccer practice as well as a discussion on each method. ***Coaches also need to keep in mind it is important for players to have some flow within a soccer practice as well as to have time to figure out soccer problems on their own. If the coach interjects too much in a practice the amount of learning can actually decrease. The methods are organized in the manner of the least disruptive to the training session on top to the most disruptive to the training session towards the bottom. 1. The Game is the Best Teacher: This is a popular saying of the US Soccer Federation. Players do learn just by playing soccer with no formal coaching. The players gets touches on the ball which will help improve their technical ability and over time players will begin to figure out different ways to solve some of the soccer problems (tactics). A coach can manipulate different variables of a soccer practice though to emphasize a certain aspect of the game to improve learning. For example, requiring players to play 2-touch will force them to support earlier, get their body into a better position so they can play quicker, increase the speed of play, etc. Conditions and restrictions, even with no coaching, can encourage players to play a certain way! 2. Coaching Within the Flow: For this method the coach doesn't stop play but rather gives instructions to individual players, groups of players, or the team as the activity continues. This is an excellent way for coaches to convey information to the players without disrupting the flow of the practice. Coaches do need to make sure they are not giving instructions constantly or players will eventually tune them out. 3. Pull a player to the side: If a specific player could benefit from additional instruction the coach can stop that player and coach them while the rest of the players continue to play. The coach needs to be able to make the coaching points brief though so the player can join his or her team. 4. Coach at Natural Stoppages: Another time to give instruction without disrupting the flow of the practice too much is to coach at natural stoppages of the practice such as during water breaks, when the ball goes out of bounds, or if a player is injured. 5. "Freeze" Method: If a large number of players are having an issue with a technique/tactic the coach can use this method. The coach yells "freeze" and all the players stop moving. The coach can then address a technical issue or guide players to solve a tactical problem that presented itself. Because the players are frozen it can be easier for the players to see what their options are and to make a better decision. The freeze method used to be the most common and encouraged method of coaching but that has changed because when overused it can become very frustrating for the players as it disrupts the flow of the practice. 1 Us Youth Soccer Player Development Model: A Player-Centered Curriculum for US Youth Soccer Clubs. A Model Youth Practice Practice Length 1: A well-planned practice that keeps the players moving and is economical (works on multiple components of soccer at once) should not need to be very long. The suggested times are below: U6: 45 minutes (1 practice per game) U8: 60 minutes (1 practice per game) U10: 75 minutes (2 practices per game) Guidelines to Follow 1: A good practice follows these guidelines: Developmentally appropriate: Takes into consideration what players are capable of doing and designs a practice accordingly. Resist the urge to try to teach players techniques and tactical abilities that are suggested for older players. Introducing skills earlier does not mean the players will become better. Often, if the players are not ready/capable of learning a skill they will become frustrated. If this happens frequently they will not want to continue to play. Appropriate information: Not too much (over-coaching), relevant to age level curriculum Economical: Select activities that address as many components of soccer as possible at the same time. A great activity allows a player to make decisions (tactical component) while using technique (technical component) and keeps the players moving so they are getting game fitness (physical component) at the same time. Typical Practice Progression Instant activity something for the players to do as everyone is arriving at practice. One everyone has arrived or it is time to start then the players are already ready to go. Possible instant activities include: o Scrimmaging (as more players arrive make the field bigger, add more goals and soccer balls as necessary, etc.) o Juggling o Playing a favorite game that everyone is familiar with Developmentally appropriate activities select games that will keep kids moving! o Most U6 games should have a 1:1 ball to player ratio. U8 activities can be a 1:2 ball to player ratio but can also include 1:1 games. U10 activities are between 1:1 and 1:4 ball to player ratio. o Due to the short attention span of young players, several different games will have to be played depending upon the length of the practice. o Give frequent water breaks! Scrimmage age appropriate o The scrimmage could take on many different forms. Doing an age appropriate scrimmage is the best time to work in the rules of how to play soccer such as what happens when the ball goes out of bounds, after a goal, etc. A scrimmage could be 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, etc. Often with U6 and U8 players I ll start the scrimmage phase by playing a 1v1 or 2v2 game and then end the practice with a full age appropriate scrimmage (3v3 for U6, 4v4 for U8, etc.) 1 Us Youth Soccer Player Development Model: A Player-Centered Curriculum for US Youth Soccer Clubs. U8 Curriculum Overview Below is the listing of practices included in this curriculum packet. I have selected these practices in terms of what I feel is appropriate for U8 soccer player. Because some U8 some players begin to pass, many activities have a ball to player ratio of 1:2. Other activities still have a 1:1 ball to player ratio to maximize individual skill development. Each practice has several fun games and ends with a scrimmage game. You may need to add or delete practices based upon the length of your season. I hope this resource is useful to you! Youth Practice Plan U8 #1 Activity Diagram Instant activity for when the players arrive such as juggling or scrimmaging! Gates Dribbling: The coach sets up several small goals or gates (two cones a yard apart) inside a larger area. There should be at least one or two more gates than there are players. Have the players try to dribble through as many gates as they can in 60 seconds. Repeat for round 2 and see if the players can beat their OWN record. Coaching Points: After dribbling through a gate, look up to see open space and the next gate. Dribbling technique. Pirates with Gates: Set- up gates (two disc cones two steps apart) randomly in a large grid. The players try to dribble through as many gates as they can. Two players are Pirates. Players dribble around in a grid and listen for the coach to shout out a word. When that word is yelled out the players have to stop their ball, and then run to another ball. Once the players get the hang of it, the coach could yell out different body parts (elbow, forehead, bottom, etc.). The players then have to stop the ball with that body part and then move to a different ball. Once getting to the new ball the players start dribbling around right away until they hear the word shouted out. again Coaching Points: Head up, find a ball that is open and accelerate to it. Everybody s It: Each player has a ball and each player is it. The point of the game is to tag as many different players as possible. Tag should be shoulders or below and a player can t tag the same player twice in a row. Coaching Points: Vision head up while dribbling. Keep the ball close so you can change direction quickly! Storm the Castle: Split the team into two teams and divide the field into two halves. Each team has some tall cones spread out in the field. Play a regular soccer game but to score a player tries to knock a cone over of the other team (players can go on either side). Set up a lot of tall cones (regular cones, not disc cones) throughout the area. The bulldozers dribble their ball around and use it to knock over cones (kick at cones or just dribble right through them). The builders run around and pick up the cones. Switch roles after 30 seconds to a minute. You may need to play with the numbers a bit (the number of builders vs. bulldozers) depending upon the skill level (split into three groups, two groups of bulldozers and one group of builders for example). To make the game hard have the builders dribble a ball as they pick up the cones. Could have the players flip disc cones over (right side up vs. upside down) if tall cones are not available. Pac Man: One player starts with a ball in a grid (usually one of the better players). All the others start in the grid without their balls (placed just outside the grid within easy reach). When the game begins the player with the ball has to dribble the ball under control while attempting to tag others. If he does then they also get their ball and attempt the same. Variation: The Pac Man passes the ball off the other players below their knees. Coaching Points: Pac man keep the ball close so you can strike it at any time. Use of feints to make the players jump (hit them as they land). Chaotic Countdown: Players have to transfer soccer balls from one side of the grid to the other and then shoot them into the goal. Have each player come up with an animal that they are going to pretend to be. Each animal needs to have a ball. Have two players without soccer balls start off as zoo keepers. The zoo keepers run around and try to steal the soccer balls from the animals and kick them in the cage (goal, small PUGG goal, or through a cone goal). When an animal has their ball taken they become a zoo keeper as well. Play several rounds and switch who gets to start as the zoo keeper. Variations: When a player has their ball stolen they can try to win it back before it is kicked into the cage. To make the game easier have the players switch roles when the ball is kicked into the goal rather than having both be zookeepers. Ships and Subs: One team is designated the Ships, and they shield their balls from the other team which is designated the Subs. The Subs attempt to strike their balls into the Ships balls. Each Sub keeps track of the number of balls they hit in 1 minute. Switch roles and see which team makes the most direct hits. Coaching Points: Keep the ball close so you can pass it (subs) at a seconds notice or change direction quickly (ships). Passing Pac Man: Everyone has a ball inside a grid. Two players are it and wear a pinnie. The players that are it try to pass their ball so it hits someone else s ball that isn t it. When a player gets their ball hit they have to go get a pinnie and join the team of Ghosts. The last two or three people that haven t had their ball get hit yet start the next round as the Ghosts. When your tail gets taken, keep going and try to grab other tails. You can only grab tails that are tucked in. Start without a ball and then add a ball. Progress to playing with a partner (no soccer balls). The partners each have a tail but have to link elbows or hold hands (for round 1 both partners are facing the same way, for round 2 the partners are facing opposite directions). Partner Keep- Away: Players find a partner and a ball between the pair. The player with the ball tries to keep possession of the ball while their partner attempts to gain possession of the ball. Coaching Points: Keep the ball from your partner by shielding it (keeping it on the far side of the body) or by dribbling away. Stay sideways on when shielding so you can see the ball and the defender. Marbles: Players are in pairs, each with a ball. One player plays out their ball (using the inside of the foot) and the partner passes their own ball in an attempt to strike the ball their partner played out. Immediately after the player passed their ball to try to hit their partners ball, then their partner runs to their ball and tries to do the same thing. Players should keep track of how many times they hit their partner s ball. Point system: If a player hits their partners ball after it has stopped moving it is worth one point. This game can be played with thighs only, feet only, head only or any combination. Coaching Points: Balance put your feet down after touching the ball to regain your balance. Gates Passing: Players find a partner and pass their ball through as many gates as possible in 60 seconds. If players begin to go back and forth through the same gate congratulate them for creative thinking and then tell them they can t do that anymore. Gates Passing with Defenders: Set up gates throughout an area. Partners have a ball and pass through as many gates as they can. When a defender steals a ball they have to communicate with their partner that they did so and then the pair of defenders now keeps the ball. The pair that lost the ball now becomes defenders. Coaching Points: Vision, where are the defenders. Communication with partner. Crossfire: Make a grid (size depends on skill level) that is a square. Break the team into 4 teams and have each team stand on one side of the grid with a ball. Place a ball that stands out in the middle of the square. Teams try to kick their ball so it hits the ball in the middle. When a ball goes past a team s line they get a point and the ball is put back in the middle. At the end of the game the team with the fewest points wins. Teams can t touch the ball to stop it from going past their line, they can only kick a ball at it. Be creative with how you ask the players to bring the ball back! Also, move around the area so the players have to be actively looking for you. The Big Drop: Split the team into two groups. One group has a soccer ball at their feet, the other group has a soccer ball in their hands. When the game begins, the group of players with the soccer balls at their feet starts to dribble around the area. The group of players with the soccer balls in their hands tries to run around and drop their ball on a ball of someone that is dribbling around. If that happens, the player that dropped the ball gets a point and the player that got their ball dropped on keeps going. Play for 60 seconds and then switch the droppers and dribblers. Coaching Points: Keep the ball on the far side of your body. Vision to see people coming. Knockaway: Everyone has a ball and is dribbling in a grid. The object of the game is to try to kick another player s soccer ball out of the grid while keeping possession of yours. If a player gets their ball kicked out they do an exercise like 5 ball taps and then they come back in. Variation: If they can get to their ball before it stops rolling they don t have to do any exercise before coming back in. The traditional way to play eliminates a player when their ball is kicked out. The bad thing about playing that way is the players that need the most practice get eliminated immediately and then sit out. 3v3 to Endzones: Play 3v3 on a 20 yard wide by 30 yard long field. This game also can be made more challenging be restricting it to certain body parts. Coaching Points: Balance put your feet down after kicking the ball to regain balance. Try to keep the ball low. Bases: Make a 30 x 30 grid with 5 yard bases in each corner. Designate a few players as being it and they try to tag the other players. When tagged they switch roles, no tag backs. The team that is it tries to kick their soccer balls off of someone s ball from the other team. Play for 60 seconds and then switch which team is it. Sharks and Minnows: The game takes place in a rectangle; all the players start off on one side of the rectangle and are minnows while two players start in the middle and are sharks. The sharks yell out swim and the minnows have to try to dribble their (minnow food) ball to the other side of the grid (across the ocean). When a minnow is tagged they become a shark as well. Play until only two children are left. Those children become the sharks for the next game. Variations: Sharks have to steal a ball to catch a minnow. Sharks have to steal a ball and dribble it out of the grid. If the minnow can steal it back before the shark gets out of the grid they get their ball back. To make the game easier, when a minnow is captured by a shark they switch places with them so the game will only have two taggers at all times. 1v1 Inside the Square: Have 2 pairs play 1v1 inside a 15 x 15 yard square. Battleships: Each player has a ball. Space several disc cones throughout an area. Players (submarines) have to dribble around the area. The submarines shoot a torpedo (their soccer ball) at a battleship (cone). Players then go get their ball and move to a different battleship. How many battleships can you hit with your torpedo in 30 seconds? Coaching Points: Introduce ball striking technique (could use various surfaces, inside of foot or laces).
