Welcome to our 2016 Bull & Gelding Sale. Last year we had our first bull sale without Duane here to influence our decision making and it was without a doubt a daunting task for all of us at P&H. With the help and support of family and friends we put together a terrific bull sale he would surely have been proud of. Thanks to the bidders and buyers for attending the sale and helping to make it such a success. We are grateful for the confidence shown in our breeding program. In 2015 the Parsonage family farm marked its 100th year anniversary. In 1915 Bernard Parsonage bought his first quarter section of land north of Innisfail and this marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership with Sam Holmes. Over the years Parsonage & Holmes evolved into P&H Ranching Co. The gate sign may have changed a few times but the hard work, dedication and core values still remain the same. The commitment at P&H has always been to produce the best purebred genetics, with our main focus on raising top quality rancher type bulls with the commercial cowman in mind. This year we are bringing to town a super set of 2 year old Charolais bulls. Bulls that are made to calve easy then grow fast for those heavy weaning weights. This year we are introducing sons from some new herd bulls, each with exceptional performance behind them. To help with your selection we have posted EPD s, collected carcass ultrasound data and tested for performance genes. We think these bulls have loads of eye appeal with the data to back them up. EPDs - How to use them Expected Progeny Differences...EPDs are a selection tool that provides estimates of the genetic value an animal will pass on to its progeny. They can be used to help ensure that you find the best bull for your needs and long term breeding goals. Each test identifies a gene, (Leptin, PMCH, CRH,IGF2) which produces a genotype (example TT). These tests provide information to help make informed decisions while selecting bulls for your operation. Dr. Harold White captured ultrasound data at the world famous Calgary Stampede show and sale for 3 years 1967-1969. Ribeye area, in square inches, is measured between the 12th and 13th ribs and gives an estimate of the amount of muscle and lean product in the animal. Backfat, generally measured in millimeters is also measured between the 12th and 13th ribs and is an estimate of the external fat on the animal. This is an important factor affecting retail product yield. The percent of intramuscular fat is an objective measurement of marbling in live cattle. Marbling is the main trait used to determine tenderness and quality of certain cuts. As producers we strive for that uniform calf crop that grows fast with lots of muscle. If we incorporate ample marbling and limited fat cover into the mix we are creating just what the feeder and packer ordered. Circle G simmentals & angus Thanks again for your support over the past year. The 2015 sale was certainly different without Duane, but the huge crowd of people who attended and supported P&H, Alkali Lake and myself was very gratifying. I truly appreciate the loyalty and the trust shown in my breeding program. This motivates me to strive to make a good product even better! I ve made substantial investments to acquire new genetics over the past several years to achieve that goal. Duane and Corrine recruited me for this sale and it was a good fit as I share similar goals with P&H as we strive to produce practical cattle that will work well and be profitable for our customers. In 2010 D Bar C & Circle G dispersed our 450 cows and I have since rebuilt my herd by retaining the older cows as well as some that I owned outright, purchasing 30 head out of the dispersal and adding select females. My Simmental and Angus cow herd numbers have grown to 180 head. A full time employee, Ben Dowling, was hired in 2014 to share the work load. This has enabled me to expand the herd and provide more bulls to select from and offer for sale. The Circle G bulls were weaned on September 12 and ran on greenfeed swaths and banked grass until mid October. The bulls were then started on a silage based TMR ration that is balanced to grow them and allow them to express their genetic performance potential without impairing their future soundness. No creepfeed is used and no feet have been trimmed. I feel it s important to have the weaning weights totally reflect the dam s milking ability. All the bulls that are 12 months of age by sale time will be semen tested prior to selling. The bulls will return to the farm after the sale and those that haven t been tested will be after they have matured more and the weather has warmed up. Delivery to your farm will follow. I m especially proud of my current herd bull battery. Each one brings different dimensions to my breeding program that allows me to provide seedstock to my customers that excel in various traits. The Simmental bulls have homozygous polled genetics stacked in their pedigrees for many generations so the odds are high that the majority of the bulls selling are homo polled. A number of sale bulls have been tested for both the polled and black color genes. Results will be available in January. TERMS The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par in Canadian funds to the sale clerk on sale day unless otherwise previously arranged with the sellers prior to the sale.
