Glenmar Sailing Association The Course Board V o l. 3 6 A p r i l 2 0 1 7. N o. 4 Tod Herrick, Editor NOTICE OF MEETING Tuesday; April 25, 2017 Middle River Yacht Club 200 Nanticoke Rd. Essex, Md 21221 POT LUCK! Commodore's Report: The fairways in the back lot at Bowleys Marina are starting to empty out as boats are being moved to the water. Seeing the travel-lift lumbering by, along with the sounds of the Osprey and the smell of bottom paint and wa rex certainly means that it is now spring. Our boat will soon be ready for launch so final preparations for racing and cruising can begin. As spring commissioning turns into sailing, the Glenmar calendar will also start to get busy. The April general meeting is on the 25th and is a potluck dinner. Both racing fleets will start racing in the end of April or beginning of May. The Safety Cruise on May 20th is the first cruising event of the year and also coincides with the PHRF Black Cat race. A great opportunity for the PHRF crews to get out and practice their crew recover techniques. To round out May, there is the Memorial Day cruise. Other social events on the horizon are the June BBQ at Bowleys on June 17th and the Corn Roast on July 22nd. We have made some changes to the Corn Roast this year which will be discussed in the Randy's column. These changes will make attendance easier for our landed members and also expand the menu beyond grilled corn.
Finally, a quick reminder about membership renewals. The deadline to avoid the $10 late fee was April 1st. This year, we are receiving renewals earlier than last year, but are still missing responses from some of the members. I would like to post the roster early this year, so if you have not sent in your renewal yet, please do so. I will start contacting members soon to cajole them into sending in their applications. A last comment on membership. New members are the lifeblood of our club. Each year about 10% of the membership does not renew for a variety of reasons. To offset this, we need to find at least 10 new member families each year. So while you are working on your boat this spring, please take the opportunity to talk to others in the boat yard about Glenmar. Point them to the website and tell them about the benefits of joining Glenmar. Jack Janos also has some Glenmar flyers left, get some from him at the next meeting and hand them out. You never know when a random conversation can turn into a new member. See you on the water soon... Brett. Rear Commodore's Report Here I am traveling up the ICW on a friend's boat. The days are sunny and nights are cool. We are transiting from warm Florida waters back up to a warming Maryland. It is wetting my thirst for boating in the Chesapeake this summer. Our cruising season is quickly approaching. We have a great line up that begins with the safety cruise led by Ken Mercer. This is designed for both cruisers and racers alike. We have a nice turn out for the cruise - don't get left behind. Aurora will be leading the Grandchildren's Cruise the weekend of August 5-6, 2017. Glenmar is hosting Northern Bay Race Week June 24 25, 2017 and we need your help manning tables, serving food, docking boats and maybe on the committee boat. Please volunteer to help by contacting Glenn Harvey at glenn@kristany.com. Help our club put on a great event to visiting boats. See you on the water. Tod Herrick Rear Commodore
Portsmouth Fleets Report Hello Portsmouth Fleet members, It s hard to believe, but the first race is less than a month away. In fact, we should have a practice race on May 4th. After a long awaited Fall and Winter, and early Spring, it s almost time to put the boats in the water again, and spend some quality time with your crew, friends and, of course, your boat. I m really looking forward to a great season. Personally, I have some new things that I want to try. New boat handling strategies. New course management. And, even a new way to launch my boat off the trailer. Maybe you have some new strategy that you want to try on the water, this year. Speaking of trailers Have you looked at yours? Is it time for pump-up the tires and check the bearings? I need a new license for my trailer. The lights seem to always need work. If you haven t upgraded to new waterproof LED lights, you might give that a consideration. They are much more reliable than the old incandescent, filament bulbs. ( Just another thing to add to the unending list of things to do.) I have some repairs on my centerboard trunk, also. Now that the weather has turned much nicer, I really need to get started on hat work. Soon, Fran Marinaro, Sam Jackson, and I will be meeting to review the 2017 Sailing Instructions. I m not anticipating any significant changes, this year. We will sail the same course configuration as last year (Upwind Start, twice around, downwind gate, and a down-wind Finish). And, again, use of the sound starting system with a 3-minute starting sequence. Again, we ll be trying to get 2 races completed per night, and even 3 races, if there is sufficient wind. If you would have any suggestions regarding the racing or courses, please feel free to contact me. The Waffle Brunch is quickly approaching. Final arrangements are still in flux, but likely the brunch will be on April 23rd. The location at Carol Dean s home. I will send a formal Waffle Brunch notification, by the end of the week. This is always a great opportunity to great together with crew and friends, and new competitors. I am hoping to see more of Bob Blake this year. And, perhaps two Thistle crews from the Sailing Center. And, perhaps Eileen Fahrmeier will find time to compete. So, some opportunities for new competition on the water. So, let s get ready for a great season. Start looking at your boat now, so you an address those small issues you want to fix before they turn into big issues on the water. By the Way, If you are reading this, but not actively involved with racing a boat, we would appreciate some help on the Race Committee, with Fran. No experience is necessary. Fran is
very competent to set-up the course, etc. The workload is very little. But, it s an important and big help for us. And, ultimately, it s a nice evening on the water (with lots of photo opportunities watching your friends racing around the course. Hope to see you at the Waffle Brunch. Carol Dean s home. Confirmation with address and time to follow, soon. Please reserve the late morning/early afternoon, now. Best Regards, Bill Lammeree Capt. Portsmouth Fleet Member-at-Large Report Mark your calendars for the following dates: April 25th Pot Luck General Meeting at Middle River Yacht Club (MRYC) starting at 7:00PM June 16th Cookout at Bowleys Marina Gazebo #2. Charcoal will be provided. Bring your burgers, dogs, sausages or whatever you want to cook on the grill. Please invite a potential Glenmar new member that keeps their boat at Bowleys. It will be a great way to start the weekend. July 22nd CORN ROAST at MRYC. We have finalized this date to hold the corn roast in cooperation with the MRYC. Glenmar will provide the corn to roast in a pit down on the beach. A beer keg and wine at the bar (while supplies last) will be provided for Glenmar members who register for the event in advance. There will be a cooler of bottled water provided at the Glenmar tent. Sodas and liquor drinks will be available for purchase at the bar. MRYC is going to provide a pig roast as a part of the event.
