ROUNDS 7 & 8 - IMOLA RACE REPORT FERNANDO MONJE CLAIMS THE SUPER 2000 EURO CUP The other champions are Krammes, Karamyshev and Poulsen For the third time this season, Fernando Monje and his SEAT León TDi took back-to-back victories. Today at Imola the 19-year old Spaniard claimed his fifth and sixth wins out of the series eight races to be crowned champion in the Super 2000 class. Since the 2012 ETCC kicked off in Monza, Monje had proved he was in a class of his own and only a couple of technical failures occurred during the season s second race meeting at the Slovakia Ring, prevented him from securing the title even before the final event. Monje was the third SEAT to clinch the S2000 title after Ryan Sharp in 2006 and Michel Nykjær in 2007; his repeated victories also meant that the Nation s Cup was awarded to Spain and collected by SEAT Sport s director Jaime Puig. His SUNRED Engineering team-mate Igor Skuz was classified second in both races today, but it was Switzerland s Peter Rikli (Honda Civic) who finished as the runner-up in the series, beating Peter Fulín (BMW 320si) by one mere point. In the Super 1600 class, local racer Paolo Necchi tried his best, claiming pole and two race wins. However, this was not enough to steal the title from Germany s Kevin Krammes who eventually topped the standings by seven points only. The Imola races also highlighted the progress of the Maurer Motorsport Chevrolet Aveo; with two second places the 20-year old Argentine Wilson Borgnino managed to climb to fourth in the points despite missing the first event at Monza and remaining scoreless in Slovakia. The little Chevrolet has definitely the potential to stop the invincibility of the Ford Fiesta in the class. Although the Super Production title had been awarded even before Imola to Nikolay Karamyshev, the Russian recovered from an engine failure that had sidelined his Honda Civic in yesterday s qualifying and added two more victories to his tally. The title fight for the Single-Make Trophy went to the wire. In both races at Imola, Norway s Stian Paulsen managed to keep his rival Andreas Pfister at bay and eventually edged him by only six points in the final classification. RACE 1 MONJE AND KRAMMES SECURE TITLES The first race at Imola was enough for Fernando Monje and Kevin Krammes to secure their European Touring Car titles in the Super 2000 and Super 1600 classes respectively. Monje clinched his own crown in a dominant way, claiming another light to flag victory the fifth for him out of seven races while a fourth place was all Krammes needed to build an 11-point margin ahead of Paolo Necchi, with only 10 points still at stake. Monje took the lead at the start and rejected an early attack from his teammate Igor Skuz who eventually finished second. Peter Fulín was classified a distant third, followed by Peter Rilkli. Necchi built a comfortable lead and won the S1600 race, while Wilson Borgnino and his Chevrolet Aveo managed to beat Ulrike Krafft for the second place. Nikolay Karamyshev, who had already clinched the Super Production title before the Italian event, won his class from Fabio Fabiani despite starting from the back of the grid following an engine failure on Saturday. The Single-Make Trophy remains the only category that still has to crown its own champion. Stian Paulsen won the first race today from Andreas Pfister and now the two of them are split by only 4 points before the second race. Key moments Start Monje takes the lead from the pole and keeps Skuz at bay Lap 1 Fulín overtakes Rikli for fifth Lap 6 Karamyshev overtakes Fabiani to lead the Super Production class Lap 7 Bruckner tries to pass Krammes at the Rivazza bend, but goes off and beaches his car Lap 9 Borgnino overtakes Krafft for second in the S1600 class Lap 10 Romanini s Chevrolet Aveo retires with a blown engine RACE 2 MONJE ENCORES, PAULSEN WINS SMT TITLE The reverse grid did not prevent Fernando Monje from encoring his Race 1 result and adding another victory to his impressive tally. The final title went to Stian Paulsen who beat Andreas Pfister in the Single-Make Trophy. Monje took the lead on the fourth lap, after Aytaç Biter, Peter Fulín and Igor Skuz took turns in the lead during the early stages. Fulín retired due to a technical failure, and so did Peter Rikli following a first lap incident with his own team-mate Christian Fischer who eventually was classified third behind Monje and Skuz. In the S1600 class Paolo Necchi claimed his second wins of the day. Although he was forced to start from the pit lane, he recovered and overtook Wilson Borgnino s Chevrolet Aveo on the final lap after a tough fight. Kevin Krammes celebrated his European title with a third place. Nikolay Karamishev scored another comfortable victory in the Super Production class. Stian Paulsen and Andreas Pfister delivered an exciting battle in the Single- Make Trophy. The German led during the first part of the race, however Paulsen eventually managed to overtake him and pulled away for good finishing in third overall. Key Moments Warm up lap Necchi stalls on the grid and takes the start from the pit lane Start Fischer and Rikli make contact; Rikli retires Lap 1 Paulsen overtakes Pfister at Rivazza and leads in the SMT class Lap 2 Biter goes wide at Rivazza and drops from the lead Lap 3 Monje overtakes Skuz for second Lap 4 Monje steals the lead from Fulín at Piratella Lap 5 Fulín retires because of a technical failure Lap 6 Necchi overtakes Bruckner for third in S1600
Lap 7 Necchi overtakes Krammess for second Lap 10 - Necchi takes the lead overtaking Borgnino THEY SAID THEY SAID Fernando Monje 1 st in S2000: I m obviously over the moon! I couldn t ask for more from this weekend at Imola. Everything went in a perfect way from the beginning. We have been very cautious in checking the tyre wear, because we knew that with these hot temperatures we might have problems in the final part of the race. I was able to keep a fast pace in both races and this enabled me to take the lead halfway through the second one, despite starting from eighth on the reverse grid. Kevin Krammes 1 st in S1600: I m extremely happy with winning the title! Unfortunately this has not been our best weekend. We had a few technical issues that prevented me from going faster and I had to focus on scoring the points I needed to secure the title after the first race. In the second race I pushed a bit more, but my car was not well balanced. I haven t been on the podium, but to my great delight I am European champion now! Nikolay Karamyshev 1 st in Super Production: The blown engine on Saturday had put us in some troubles, but the guys of the team were did a great job and managed to prepare the car for today s races. It was not in her best shape, but competitive enough to beat Fabiani in both races. Stian Paulsen 1 st in the Single-Make Trophy: My leading margin before Imola was one point only, therefore I knew I had to try my best to claim the title. At the end of the day I have won both races and the title. What could I ask for more? The most difficult moment was the first lap of the second race, when I tried to overtake Andreas Pfister. Then, all I had to do was focusing on not making mistakes.
