May 5-7, 3 3 State finals 3 ghsa FINALS PREVIEW No repeats as old, new powers enter finals By Craig Sager II Georgia will not see a defending state champion take the podium in 3. All five AA-AAAAAA matchups feature teams either in pursuit of their first state title or looking to once again wear the crown. BACKYARD BRAWL... The GSA added Class AAAAAA this season, and the state s new highest classification sets up a matchup between Region 5 rivals Milton and. The ornets have been waiting since 986 to return the title to while Milton last won it in 4. The 3 Class AAAAAA final sets up like when Region 8 rivals Brookwood and Parkview played. The trend of the toughest regions producing postseason success with battle-tested teams continues. In region play, Milton and squared off twice with Milton winning both (7-3, 6-). Will Jackson and Payton Smith recorded the wins during the season, and Milton s deep pitching staff includes Dylan Cease and Alex Schnell. Cease and Schnell stifled the bats of defending-champion Parkview in Games and 3 of the semis., meanwhile, handled the pressure of the postseason by winning three road series. In the semifinals Walton took to a Game 3, but the ornets loss in Game was a - decision in which they outhit the Raiders 7-3. In Game 3, Syd opkins had two doubles and a base hit in s 7-6 win. is a superb base-running team and scored multiple runs in the semifinals off sacrifice bunts and advantageous hitting when runners were in scoring position. CANINE CLAS... Greenbrier and Pope will battle for the AAAAA title. Greenbrier has been the visiting team the entire playoffs and carries the momentum of a - sweep over Whitewater into the finals. Adam Grice carried the Wolf Pack in Game to a 5-4 comeback win with a solo home run and two-run double. In Game, Greenbrier erased its deficit by scoring all six of their runs in with two outs. In the series, all runs were scored with two outs. The lineup is deep with hitters and forces opposing pitchers into high pitch counts. Pope features impressive pitching with aces Braden Zarbnisky and Nathaniel Lowe. Zarbnisky and Lowe will be be needed to minimize the Wolf Pack s knack for late inning rallies. The Greyhounds arrive fresh off a Game 3 walk-off win over Starr s Mill in extra innings. DEKALB DERBY... is looking for its third title in four years and will host Redan in the Class AAAA final. swept Crisp County in the semis after two outstanding pitching performances. In Game Michael Toner carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning in a 6-3 win, and in Game, Sean Guenther pitched a complete game, striking out 3 batters in a - decision. Redan, in its first state finals appearance, got solid pitching from its bullpen and timely hits from Trega Williams and Bakari Gayle. Williams bombed a three-run walkoff homer in the Raiders 9-8 Game win and Gayle drove in the go-ahead-run in the bottom of the sixth in the decisive 3- win in Game 3. Triple-A TUSSLE... North all hosts perennial-power Cartersville in the Class AAA finals. Cartersville claimed consecutive titles in 8-9, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals the past three seasons. The Purple urricanes swept St. Pius X in the semifinals as Austin Adams and Beau Benefield provided the run support within the lineup of capable hitters. Cartersville pitcher ayes Linn will be rested for the finals after going six innings and giving up one earned in their 4-3 Game win in the semis. North all, like Redan, is in its first final appearance ever. The Trojans have excellent pitching, and in the semifinals, Preston Graham pitched a one-hitter in Game. Colton Duttweiler and Preston Graham combined to toss a two-hitter in Game 3. BUCKEAD BATTLE... Lovett versus Westminster is another rivalry matchup, as the Buckhead neighbors will square off in the Class AA championship. Westminster swept Lovett earlier this season by winning three close games. In the postseason, the Wildcats are a perfect 6- and have outscored their opponents 6-. Ace ays Meyer threw a no-hitter in Game of the semifinals series against. Conrad Cornell pitched a complete game in the series clincher, giving up one earned in the 5- Westminster win. Lovett s Mitch Stallings struck out batters in his Game win in the semis and Pearce owell gave up three earned runs and struck out 4 in the Game loss. Grant aley, Sean Reagan and Nick Boden lead the Lions batting lineup. Photo of North all s Andrew Smith courtesy of J Photography. Sager can be reached at csager@scoreatl.com. www.gsa.net

ghsa 6 3 State finals baseball otbed MLB standouts have Georgia on their mind By Fletcher Proctor Ever since Ty Cobb strapped on the spikes and stepped into the batter s box, the state of Georgia has produced some of Major League Baseball s best talent. Players such as Wally Joyner, Ray Knight, Jackie Robinson, Rondell White and Kevin Brown were all born in Georgia and many current Major League players once suited up for GSA action. FIRST-ROUND TALENTS... When the Montreal Expos selected Michael Barrett out of Pace Academy with the No. 8 pick in the first round of the 995 draft, the National League East Division power was selecting one of the most decorated players to come from the Peach State in years. As a shortstop for the Knights, Barrett led Pace to three straight GSA Class A titles before winning the 995 Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year Award. e was shifted from shortstop to catcher in an attempt to help him reach the parent club quicker, and on Sept. 9, 998, Barrett drilled a home run in his first game. The Atlanta native played for four teams during his career and won the 5 Silver Slugger award as the National League s best-hitting catcher. e also played for Team USA in the 6 World Baseball Classic. While Barrett won three rings during his time at Pace Academy, he had a decision to make after high school: Clemson or the MLB? Barrett ultimately chose the allure of Major League Baseball, and Clemson would again feel the sting several years later when another Peach State product chose the route of professional baseball over ACC life. Parkview s Jeff Francoeur led the Panthers to back-to-back Class AAAAA titles in and, as well as three football state championships. Before being selected No. 3 overall by the Atlanta Braves, Francoeur impressed scouts with his.433 average, 55 home runs and 64 RBIs. is high school home run clips on YouTube are the stuff of legends and those around the Parkview program still get chills talking about the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year. Francoeur debuted with the Atlanta Braves in 5 and homered in his first game. e was also a stud in the field, capturing the 7 Rawlings Gold Glove award. Since leaving Atlanta in a trade, Francoeur has played for the Mets, Rangers and Royals. Many around the state of Georgia recognize the name Gordon Beckham as the player who led the University of Georgia to within just a few innings of a College World Series title, but Westminster Wildcats fans know Beckham as a two-sport star who held several football records and who is now in the school s hall of fame. Beckham started on the Westminster varsity at shortstop as a freshman and eventually earned All-State honors. e also won SEC Player of the Year honors at UGA in 8 after twice leading the Bulldogs to the College World Series. is 53 career home runs are the most in Bulldogs history. e made his Major League debut with the Chicago White Sox less than one year after he was taken No. 8 overall in the 8 draft. Beckham was named the 9 American League Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News and the MLBPA. BUSTING BIG... Buster Posey never led Lee County to a GSA state title, but he has seemingly won everything under the sun since. Posey was a pitcher and shortstop for Lee County, setting the school record for batting average (.544) as a junior. Over his final two seasons, Posey was - with a.6 ERA his senior season to go with 8 strikeouts. e also clubbed 4 home runs and drove in 4 RBIs his senior year. Posey s huge 5 was rewarded with the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year award as well as the Louisville Slugger State Player of the Year award and EA Sports and Baseball America All-American recognition. While at Florida State, Posey picked up the Johnny Bench Award, the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year award, the Dick owser Trophy and the 8 Golden Spike Award. The Giants took Posey with the No. 5 pick in the 8 draft, and Posey would win the Rookie of the Year award, the NL MVP, the NL ank Aaron Award, the Silver Slugger and the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. e has also won a pair of World Series titles with the Giants. Corey Patterson is a name that folks may recognize from his time with the Cubs, Orioles, Reds, Nationals and Brewers, but the arrison star led the oyas to the 998 Class AAAA state title with a dominating senior year. Patterson was impressive with a.58 average to go with home runs, 6 RBIs, 38 stolen bases and 8 runs in 38 games. The Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year was also named to the Baseball America and USA Today first-team All-America teams. Patterson also took home the USA Baseball Amateur Player of the Year and Baseball Coaches Association co-national high school player of Great Baseball Action! the year awards. The Cubs were impressed enough to select him No. 3 overall in the 998 draft. e also won a World Series ring with the Cardinals in. OLYMPIC DREAMS... Dexter Fowler may be one of few Georgia baseball standouts to boast a GSA state championship and an Olympic medal on their resumes. Fowler helped Milton to the 4 Class AAAAA state title, and in the same year, was named Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year. Fowler then turned down both Miami and arvard after the Colorado Rockies selected him in the 4 draft. After spending time in the minor leagues, Fowler was selected to the 8 U.S. Olympic team that earned a bronze medal in Beijing. e made his debut with the Rockies later that season. Other names that have experienced success on the GSA diamonds as well as the MLB diamonds include Adam Wainwright (Glynn Academy), Macay McBride (Screven County) and the Sprayberry tandem of Marlon Byrd and Kris Benson. Benson was named Gatorade Player of the Year in 993 as Sprayberry reached the GSA championship series. e attended Clemson University from 993-996, and led the Tigers to the 996 College World Series. e picked up multiple amateur awards that season as well as a bronze medal in the 996 Olympic Games before being selected No. overall in the 996 draft. Byrd, meanwhile, would help Sprayberry win the 995 Class AAAA title before heading off to Georgia Tech. COMING SOON... One final name that will soon hit it big is the Mets Zack Wheeler, who attended East Paulding. Many baseball experts consider Wheeler to be the best pitching prospect in the minor leagues after being selected No. 6 overall in the 9 draft by the San Francisco Giants. Wheeler was 95-36 in four years for East Paulding, including going 7-3 in his final two seasons. Wheeler struck out 7 batters his junior year while pitching 64. innings, only to better than with 5 strikeouts in 77. innings his senior season. is 9- record and.54 ERA for East Paulding his senior season helped him earn the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year award. e has twice been a participant in the All-Star Futures Game and could make his Major League debut later this year. Photo of Buster Posey courtesy of the San Francisco Giants. Proctor can be reached at fproctor@scoreatl.com. Loganville s Clint Frazier has raised MLB scouts eyebrows over the past four years. Frazier is projected to be drafted in the top five picks of this year s MLB Draft. Like Frazier, Grayson s Austin Meadows is a projected top-five pick. Meadows, an outfield prospect, batted over.5 this year. Lucas Sims of Brookwood was the Braves first-round pick in the draft. Sims pitched the Broncos to the state championship series last season. Parkview s Matt Olson led the Panthers to last season s state championship before being drafted by Oakland in the first round of the draft. www.gsa.net
