February 12, 2015 Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals Preview Carmel Girls Chasing National High School Sports History Seven individuals with 24 state titles to their credit are among those participating in what could prove to be another historic weekend in the 41 st Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals. Preliminary swimming heats will begin Friday at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT at the Indiana University Natatorium with the top 16 in each event returning Saturday for the championship and consolation finals scheduled for 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT. The state diving competition begins Saturday at 9 am ET. Carmel s girls swimming and diving team will be looking to leave its mark in national high school sports history this weekend. Should the Greyhounds capture the team title for the 29 th consecutive year, they would tie the national record held by Punahou High School (Honolulu, HI) which won 29 straight in boys swimming and diving from 1958 86. Carmel s first championship in this string arrived November 22, 1986 when girls swimming and diving was a fall sport in Indiana. Five different coaches have directed the Carmel program during its run with Chris Plumb in charge for its last eight titles. Plumb has also guided the Carmel boys team to three championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Even with that achievement within reach, this year s event may be hardpressed to surpass last year across the board excitement when state records were set in 10 of the 12 events including a remarkable 15 over the two days. Carmel junior Claire Adams is one of three individuals to have set records a year ago and returns in both the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. She has eight state championships to her credit through her first two years of high school and helped the Greyhounds to their 31 st consecutive sectional crown by racking up a perfect 544 points. She went 52.97 to set the 100 back record last year and tops the field this year with her 53.53 in last weekend s sectional. Her 1:46.95 set a new mark in the 200 freestyle last year and she enters this weekend with the fourth best time at 1:50.27. Senior teammate Amy Bilquist swept both freestyle sprints lowering the 100 record to 48.93 and winning the 50 in 22.17, just two hundredths of a second off her record setting swim during last year s prelims. She had the top performances in both finishing 22.72 in the 50 and 49.65 in the 100 in the sectional. Crown Point senior Aly Tetzloff set a new state mark in last year s 100 butterfly when she turned in a 52.70 helping the Bulldogs to the state runner up spot, their best finish in school history. Her time of 53.48 in the sectional tops this year s field. Sophomore teammate Hannah Kukurugya won last year s 500 free in 4:47.83 and also enters the weekend with the top time of 4:50.03.

Lillia King, a senior from Evansville Reitz is the top seed in two events. She tops everyone in the 200 IM in 1:59.79 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.33. Fishers sophomore Lauryn Parrish owns the leading time in the 200 freestyle after a 1:47.64 last Saturday. Brooke Schultz could be a threat to the one meter diving state record is she has a similar performance to the one she had on Tuesday at the regional when she accumulated 566.20 points. The state record was set last year when Sarah Bacon of Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter captured her second straight crown with 546.45 points. Three different teams had the top relay swims last week as Columbus North went 1:43.15 in the 200 medley, Crown Point clocked a 1:34.27 in the 200 freestyle and Hamilton Southeastern owned the best in the 400 free in 3:26.42. Results will be posted throughout both days to IHSAA.org and tweeted at @IHSAA1. Saturday s championship and consolation finals will be streamed live at IHSAAtv.org beginning at 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT. Mark Jaynes and Tony Young will host with Thad Vandeventer reporting from the pool deck and Kurt Hass serving as the diving announcer. Dates Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, 6 pm ET (Swimming prelims). Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, 9 am ET (Diving prelims and semis), 1 pm ET (Consolations and finals for all events). Site: Indiana University Natatorium, IUPUI, 901 W. New York St., Indianapolis Website Admission: Unreserved tickets are $8 per session or $12 both days. Webstream: Saturday's championship and consolation finals will be streamed live at IHSAAtv.org beginning at 1 pm ET / 12 pm CT. Advancement The top 16 in each swimming event during Friday s prelims will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing nine through 16 on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each.
