Live television of all four Championship Games available on MySpectrumSports.com. May 27, 2017 Welcome to the NCHSAA Women s Soccer Championships! Today at Dail Soccer Field we will crown four champions after a season full of hard work and dedication. We believe that this will be a tremendous experience for the student-athletes, the coaches, administrators and the fans of the schools who have won their way through the playoffs to reach this point. We are grateful to all of those who have a hand in making these championships possible, including the host city sponsor, Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, and our television partner, Spectrum Cable, who will provide live streaming video coverage once again this year. There are also a lot of volunteers and NCHSAA staff members who have worked tirelessly toward making this event the best it can be. If you are a high school athletics fan, then you are in the right place to enjoy a great day of soccer competition! We appreciate your support of high school athletics and hope you enjoy the best soccer our state has to offer -- The NCHSAA state championshps! Welcome from the President Fans, Welcome to the NCHSAA Women s Soccer State Championship. Competing for the state title is a highlight in any high school athlete s career. Every team remembers the preseason workouts and the first weeks of practice thinking to themselves this will be our year to play for a state title. Now, here we are watching the two best soccer teams compete for the right to be called a champion a state champion. The amount of time and effort by the athletes, the coaches and volunteers has paid off to punch a ticket to Raleigh today to finish strong and bring a state championship trophy home. For many of our seniors this is the last time to make an indelible mark for their school s sports legacy. Regardless of which team you are here today to cheer on to the title, we must never forget these are student-athletes who play soccer for the love of the game and the competition it provides. Ever since the NCHSAA was established in 1913, our core mission has been to provide opportunities for interscholastic competitions within the state of North Carolina. We offer this opportunity understanding that success in the classroom is key to success in life. Those students who play sports in high school learn valuable lessons about winning and losing, working hard, setting goals, building leadership characteristics to name just a few. Each year, at our annual meeting in May, we recognize those individuals and teams who excel in the classroom and on the field of competition. We also recognize teams from all four classifications who over the course of one year are also recognized for displaying sportsmanship in all of their athletic teams. Prior to the match today we will be recognizing an athlete from each team which embodies sportsmanship and serves as ambassador for their team in the community. Sportsmanship is more important than ever in the world of high school athletics, especially when some of our professional athletes cannot display the same level of integrity as our high school athletes. The honorees at today s state championship exhibit sportsmanship not only during competition, but also during practice when they help a fellow teammate get up after being knocked down. These athletes are the role models we want all of our younger athletes to follow and look up to. Most of all, I want to thank you the FAN for supporting your favorite team today. Regardless of the outcome, this is a special day for all of our athletes. Thank you for supporting the NCHSAA and all 409 member schools which makes this association the best in the country. Sincerely, Rodney Shotwell President 2

2016 Championship Retrospectives With just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime, the ice was finally broken as Carrboro s eleventh shot of the game was a charm. Elizabeth Cato served a corner kick from the right of the Forbush cage. Natasha Turner was able to establish position in the box, and she headed the ball into traffic. On a deflection, it was fitting that the ball found of the foot of Alexa Wojnovich, who chipped a shot top shelf from just a five feet out for the score. Wojnovich s goal gave Carrboro a 1-0 lead, and it was a team -leading 36th of the season for the freshman. 3-A CHAMPIONSHIP - Weddington gets two first half goals and holds off Jacksonville Photo by MaxPreps.com 1-A CHAMPIONSHIP - CSD sprints to a 5-1 victory over Franklin Academy in 1A Championship Community School of Davidson jumped on top of Franklin Academy in the opening minute as the Spartans netted a Julia Grainda header off a corner kick by Lissi Gordon to open the 1A Women s Soccer State Championship with a bang. The Spartans found the back of the net four more times on the day, including another by Grainda, who added a pair of assists on the three other Spartan goals on her way to M.V.P. honors. In the 18th minute, Anna Lavella sent a long ball through the Franklin Academy defense finding Gordon who slipped it past the Patriot keeper and made it. Gordon would hit the post three minutes later, just missing her second goal, before being stopped at point-blank range by the feet of Patriots defender Danielle Morrison in the 24th minute. Grainda knocked in her second of the day in the 28th minute on a breakaway thanks to a perfectly weighted pass from Gordon, as Grainda chipped it around the keeper and slotted it in the net, and the Spartans took a 3-0 lead to halftime. 2-A CHAMPIONSHIP - Wojnovich sends Carrboro past Forbush in 2A State Championship Carrboro High School took home their second straight 2A Women s Soccer State Championship with a overtime victory over Forbush High School. Freshman Alexa Wojnovich sent the Jaguar faithful home happy with her 36th goal of the season on a corner kick in the first overtime at North Carolina State University s Dail Soccer Park. As she had done all game long, Calyn Davis stood tall between pipes for Forbush. With the shots favoring Carrboro 10-1 in regulation, the Falcon goalkeeper was tested again right from the start of the extra time. A minute, and fifteen seconds into the first overtime, Elizabeth Cato served a corner kick off the crossbar. Then thirty seconds later, Natasha Turner tapped ball on goal that Davis scooped for a stop. Two set pieces made the difference for the Weddington Warriors as Olivia Odle and Remi Roberts combined for both of the Warrior goals in the 3A State Championship game, besting a tough Jacksonville side. Weddington had most of the possession throughout the night, but it was a pair of set pieces that provided the Warrior offense on the night. The first a goal game came in the 28th minute after sustained pressure by the Warrior attack won a corner kick. Odle stepped up with her left foot and dropped a perfect ball in from the corner to Roberts, who towered over everyone, to head the ball down on the goal line and in the net making it. Some nine minutes later the Warriors won a free kick 40 yards from goal and Odle stepped up with her left foot again to drop a ball in the six-yard box to Roberts, again heading the ball to the back of the net and giving Weddington a lead they would not relinquish. Roberts was named the game s M.V.P. 4-A CHAMPIONSHIP - Providence holds off Middle Creek for a 4A Title win Panther Creek denied Providence a 4A Women s Soccer State Championship a season ago as Panther Creek sped to a win. This year s Providence Panthers squad would not be denied as they poured on the pressure in the early part of the second half, netting two goals before holding off late-charging Middle Creek. Hard-working Mady Ellis earned a corner kick for Providence with a third speedy run down the right side, earning the corner on a deflection by the Middle Creek keeper. Sophomore Panther defender Mia Thillet sent in a beautiful ball from the corner to the edge of the six, and it dropped right to Molly McGarry who buried the ball in the back of the net with 31 minutes to play. McGarry s goal, her 19th of the season, and solid midfield play earned her the game s M.V.P. award. Providence added another goal on a breakaway opportunity as Madeline McIver s shot was stopped by Caroline Lauer initially, but the rebound popped far enough free to Jenn Simons and the Panthers put in goal number 2 with 7:28 to play. Middle Creek responded immediately as Mustang forward Kylie McElroy converted a turnover at the top of the box into a goal, blasting a shot off the keeper and in, just 12 seconds after the Providence goal, to make the score with just under 7:20 to play. 3

She and the other seniors have helped mature several key newcomers including sophomore Darby Bevis and junior Kaitlyn Russell who have both been called on to fill starting roles for the team in their first year of varsity competition. Wojnovich leads the team in goals scored, with 21 scored through the team s first 14 games. Araba has 15 through the same time-span. The Jaguars boast a stingy defensive unit as well. Carrboro has only allowed 7 goals on the season in 22 games. WEST STOKES WILDCATS Location: King, N.C. The first visit turned out well for the Wildcats in 2014 as they defeated Washington on their way to the 2A crown. Coach Chris Manley knew that they had the talent to make a deep run in the playoffs, and his intuition was confirmed when the Wildcats knocked off conference rival and the two-time defending Western Regional Champions, Forbush, in overtime to share the conference championship. Manley said, We knew we had the talent to make a run this season, but knew that we had to get healthy and find our style and team chemistry. Our girls bought into the process that began during the off-season and is the foundation for our success. 9

The hard work that these girls have put in has been unbelieveable and we have only gotten better as the year has gone on. They ve stuck together and believed they can accomplish anything. No one player has scored more than 20 goals for this year s Pirates, but they do have six players that are in double-figures in the category for the year. Last year the Weddington side won their first state championship as Remi Roberts led the Warriors to the victory over Jacksonville. Roberts was named the game s Most Valuable Player a season ago. The Weddington squad had to replace the loss of four All- State performers from last year s team, and thanks to the contributions of four talented freshman this season as well as the solid play of three sophomores from last year s team, the loss hasn t been as hard to handle as Coach Powell Williams expected. The Warriors boast two All-State performers in Remi Roberts and freshman star Faith Adams. Through 15 games Adams had 15 goals and 18 assists, leading the team in the latter category. Roberts, a senior defender, has added seven goals and a pair of assists for the squad. Junior Kaelee Van Gundy leads the team with 19 goals scored this year. Weddington has only allowed 14 goals this season and recorded a stretch of seven games without allowing a goal during the year. 13

Down at the half against Fuquay, the squad ripped off six second half goals to beat the Bengals 6-1. They also beat one of the top teams in Georgia, Walton, who featured a lineup with several ECNL players. Coach Michele Miller said the season has been about possession for them, We have pretty technical players and can find goals from a variety of spots. In fact 14 different players have scored this year for the Crusaders and five of them have reached the double digit mark for the year. Senior Taylor Currie has scored 26 goals in her final year with the program to lead the team. Sophomore Maggie Pierce has been dynamic with 21 goals and 26 assists. In fact, the Titans haven t allowed a goal since that loss, ripping off 10 straight shutouts including a 0-0 win over Charlotte Catholic in the regional finals that saw the Titans claim the Western Regional Final in penalty kicks 5-4.
