Dezadeash See Offers very good fishing for lake trout, pike, burbot, whitefish and grayling. The hot spots change during the season, so please check with the management for the most upto-date fishing information. Be aware of winds, especially when fishing Sixmile or the east side of the Lake. Remember - never drive a boat directly to land. Always switch off the engine 50 meters from the shore then row to land because as the lake tends to be very shallow at the edges. Guides are not necessary as long as you are competent in handling boats. Keep a constant eye on the weather. Special regulations: Barbless single hooks only. Kosten mit Guide: Can. $ 600.00 pro Boot / Tag. Sixmile This stretch of magnificent water provides spectacular river and lake scenes formed by the Dezadeash River. Because of the shallows, be especially careful when approaching the river-mouth. If the water is low you may have to cut the engine and row. When the water level is particularly low, you ll have to get out of the boat and pull it across the shallows into the river itself. Be cautious of the numerous water plants. It is important to regularly check/clean the propeller to make sure it is free of weeds, otherwise the engine may overheat. After passing through a small shallow lake, you ll see a cluster of large rocks on the right side of the river - this is an excellent spot for fishing. A guide is not necessary provided you are capable of handling a boat and able to read the water. Remember to ALWAYS notify the Lodge in advance of your plans and keep a watchful eye on the wind and weather. We cross a river and several creeks then follow the delta of Alder Creek which eventually takes us to Mush Lake. The drive itself provides excellent opportunities to spot moose, bears, beavers, eagles, and other wildlife. The Lodge s motorboat is stationed on the lake-shore where the enveloping mountains are mirrored in the Lake s sparkling blue waters. Keep your eyes peeled for grazing Dall sheep and mountain goats on the slopes and cliffs. The mouth and outlet of Mush plus the creek inlets provide excellent fishing for lake trout, many weighing between 3 and 10 pounds. We ve caught 30-pounders there as well. The end of the lake is an ideal spot to set up camp and we ve often watched moose amble past our camp-site. Mush and Bates Lakes are connected by a 1 km long river, an excellent stretch to fly-fish for large grayling. Due to the rapids, boating all the way to Bates Lake is impossible. Directly below the rapids we store a big canoe. Weather permitting; we can explore Bates Lake which is famous for trophy-sized lake trout. Es muss nicht immer Fischen sein! Hiking The 22,000 square miles of Kluane Park was granted National Park status in 1972. This Park is home to the snow-covered St. Elias Mountains which includes Canada s highest mountain, Logan, with its elevation of almost 6,000 meters. The Park s fauna and flora are more impressive here than anywhere else on the continent. Whereas there is an excellent choice of hiking trails that can be easily undertaken on one s own, many trips do require a guide as you walk through pristine wilderness, untouched by civilization. With a little luck you will see a lot of wildlife as the Park is a paradise for both black bears and grizzlies. You may also encounter moose, Dall Sheep, mountain goat, lynx, coyotes, wolves, beavers, porcupine and marmots. For bird-watchers, the Park is home to over 100 species of birds, including both Bald and Golden eagle plus many species of hawks and falcons. The following list provides some examples of interesting hikes: Alsek Valley Here at the Lodge we call it Bear Valley. This hike will take you along the banks of the Dezadeash and Alsek Rivers through a valley brimming with fantastic vegetation. In spring the area resembles a stunning sea of multicoloured flowers while in the fall the vegetation totally changes as the bushes become laden with a profusion of berries. These fruits attract the bears, providing them with essential food-stuff prior to their approaching hibernation. Directions: North on the Haines Highway and then on the Alaska Highway to Bear Creek Lodge. Here an old bush road leads into the valley. Kosten: Can. $ 600.00 pro Tag / max. 5 Personen (geführt). Mietwagenmiete nur für ungeführte Touren. 11
Frederick See A few years ago we bought an old trapper s cabin at this seriously remote lake. To get there we follow the trapper s trail and although the trip takes six to eight hours, we pass through some wonderfully rugged scenery. When you do reach your destination, our motor boat and canoe at the cabin enables you to explore the area and watch moose, black bear and lots of other wildlife. Directions: South on the Haines Highway to the end of Dezadeash Lake, turn off at Papineau Road which leads to the trapper s trail. Kosten: Can. $ 600.00 pro Tag (max 3 Personen). St. Elias See You follow a 6 km, well-maintained hiking trail which takes you to an alpine-like plateau which cradles a beautiful, small lake. A canoe is waiting for you to explore the area. The lake possesses a healthy beaver population and it is not uncommon to see moose on the shore and wild goats on the steep mountains. You can hike this trail without a guide. These are only a few examples of the many trails easily accessible from the Lodge. Please inquire with the management for further suggestions. 12
