Welcome from the President Fans, Welcome to the NCHSAA Baseball State Championship. Competing for the state title is a highlight in any high school athlete s career. Every team remembers the preseason workouts and the first weeks of practice thinking to themselves this will be our year to play for a state title. Now, here we are watching the two best soccer teams compete for the right to be called a champion a state champion. The amount of time and effort by the athletes, the coaches and volunteers has paid off to punch a ticket to Raleigh or Zebulon today to finish strong and bring a state championship trophy home. For many of our seniors this is the last time to make an indelible mark for their school s sports legacy. Regardless of which team you are here today to cheer on to the title, we must never forget these are student-athletes who play soccer for the love of the game and the competition it provides. Ever since the NCHSAA was established in 1913, our core mission has been to provide opportunities for interscholastic competitions within the state of North Carolina. We offer this opportunity understanding that success in the classroom is key to success in life. Those students who play sports in high school learn valuable lessons about winning and losing, working hard, setting goals, building leadership characteristics to name just a few. Each year, at our annual meeting in May, we recognize those individuals and teams who excel in the classroom and on the field of competition. We also recognize teams from all four classifications who over the course of one year are also recognized for displaying sportsmanship in all of their athletic teams. Prior to the first game of the series we will be recognizing an athlete from each team which embodies sportsmanship and serves as ambassador for their team in the community. Sportsmanship is more important than ever in the world of high school athletics, especially when some of our professional athletes cannot display the same level of integrity as our high school athletes. The honorees at today s state championship exhibit sportsmanship not only during competition, but also during practice when they help a fellow teammate get up after being knocked down. These athletes are the role models we want all of our younger athletes to follow and look up to. Most of all, I want to thank you the FAN for supporting your favorite team today. Regardless of the outcome, this is a special day for all of our athletes. Thank you for supporting the NCHSAA and all 409 member schools which makes this association the best in the country. Sincerely, Rodney Shotwell President 2

Welcome from the Commissioner June 2-3, 2017 Welcome to the annual edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state softball championships! During this weekend, four different championships will be decided at two outstanding venues, including Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh and Five County Stadium in Zebulon. We believe that this will be a tremendous experience for the student-athletes, the coaches and administrators, and the fans of the schools who have won their way through the playoffs to reach this point. We are grateful to all of those who have a hand in making these championships possible, including all of the specific host city sponsors in each of the locations. This year FloLive.com, part of FloSports, is on hand to provide special video coverage for this event. There are also a lot of volunteers and NCHSAA staff members who have worked tirelessly toward making this event the best it can be. We always strive to do anything we can to make this weekend a great life-long memory for each of these student-athletes participating and their communities. If you are a high school baseball fan in our state, then you are in the right place if you re in one of these stadiums to enjoy championship baseball and a tradition that is nearly a century in the making. We appreciate your support of high school athletics and hope you enjoy the best high school baseball our state has to offer -- the NCHSAA State Championships! Sincerely, Que Tucker Commissioner 3

2016 1A Baseball Championship Recaps GAME 1 - Long s walk-off single propels Cherryville past Whiteville 5-4 By: Evan Moesta Despite a stellar performance on the mound from Whiteville High School left-hander MacKenzie Gore, Cherryville High School was able to win a rain-flled first game of the 1A Baseball State Championship Series. The Ironmen managed to weather a late game storm from the clouds, and the Wolfpack to win in walk-off fashion on Friday night at Five County Stadium. Down 4-2 heading to their final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning with their backs to wall, Brooks Baldwin drew a walk for the Wolfpack, and Grainger came home to score on a passed ball to Hunter Harwood. Harwood proceeded rip a double to left to keep Whiteville s two-out hopes alive, and put a pair of runners into scoring position. Against, a new Cherryville pitcher in Noah Eaker, Grayson Ward was able to draw a base on balls to fill the bags for Dylan Lawson. One strike away from losing the game, Brooks Baldwin was able to come home on an Eaker wild pitch to knot things up at four. The Ironmen bounced back from the blown lead by taking advantage of a pair of miscues from the Wolfpack. In his second inning of relief work, Dylan Lawson hit Austin Treadway in the shoulder with a one out pitch. Treadway made his way to second base on a wild pitch, and Cherryville was in business after Jonathan McSwain slapped a ball to third base that was bobbled to put two on with only one out. Lawson caught Ryan Owens looking at the plate for the second out of the seventh, but he was unable to escape the jam with Randall Long up to bat. Long, who went 2-3 with a hit by pitch on Friday came through with a hard hit ground ball to left field, scoring Treadway from second in the process for the 5-4 walk-off victory. Whiteville was able to establish the early lead with a pair of one run innings in the first three stanzas. Designated Hitter, Hunter Harwood rocked a two run double to the gap in left center in the top of the Wolfpack second. Grayson Ward followed with a double of his own three pitches later to score Harwood, and give Whiteville a 1-0 lead. That helped give starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore confidence on the bump as he went on to register strikeouts on eight of the first nine Cherryville outs. He earned a no decision in his five innings pitched, but he was able to strike out eleven batters in that span, while allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman. Cherryville s biggest offensive damage came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a leadoff hit batsman, Randall Long broke up Gore s no-hitter with a one out RBI double to left field. 20 Noah Eaker followed by reaching on an error from Whiteville s shortstop Taylor Smith that put runners on the corners with only one out. After a strikeout of Will Walker for the second out of the inning, Carlton Jackson laced a two-run double down the left field line to put Cherryville ahead 3-2. The momentum built from the three run Ironmen fourth, as a pair of stellar plays in the field denied Whiteville rallies in the fifth and sixth innings. Rain and lightning suspended play for 47 minutes, but it did not cool down the Cherryville bats. Ryan Owens greeted new Whiteville pitcher Dylan Lawson with a leadoff double in the resumed bottom of the sixth inning. 2016 1A Baseball Championship Recaps GAME 2 - Cherryville wins back and forth battle for 1A State Championship By: Evan Moesta On Saturday afternoon, Cherryville won their first 1A State Baseball Championship since 2008 with a 7-4 victory over twotime defending state champion Whiteville. Cherryville responded right away to make the Wolfpack lead short-lived. Randall Long, and Noah Eaker got the inning going with a pair of singles, and after a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position, Carlton Jackson lifted a fly ball to right field to score Long from third on a sacrifice, tying the game at 3-3. The Ironmen, and Wolfpack encountered four ties, and four lead changes in the game. Noah Eaker did it all for Cherryville on Saturday afternoon as his bat, and right arm proved to be too much for Whiteville. With the scored tied at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning, and two men out, Ryan Owens reached on an error, and Randall Long was issued an intentional pass for the Ironmen. That set the stage for Eaker who rocked a Brooks Baldwin offering to the wall in right field for a two run triple to put Cherryville ahead for good at 6-4. Eaker gave himself a lead to close as he entered with a runner on first base and nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning. A 4-6 putout started the junior s second relief appearance in as many games. He picked off the runner that he had inherited at first base, and for good measure the right-hander broke off a breaking ball for strike three to get Cherryville within three outs of a state championship victory. With a now 7-4 lead following a seventh inning RBI from Austin Treadway, Noah Eaker hurled a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the save. By inducing a series ending flyout to Hunter Harwood, Eaker clinched the state title for the Ironmen, and Most Valuable Player honors for himself. In the two games that were played, Noah Eaker went 1-0 on the mound with a save in 2.1 innings pitched. At the plate in game two of the series, he went 3-4 with a triple, and three runs batted in. After a walk-off victory in game one on Friday night, it took Scott Heavner s bunch only three batters to establish a lead over Whiteville. Austin Treadway, and Jonathan McSwain started the top of the first inning with singles for Cherryville. Ryan Owens followed with a single of his own, and it scored Treadway for a 1-0 lead. After Randall Long walked to load the bases with nobody out, Wolfpack starter Brooks Baldwin got Noah Eaker to ground into a fielders choice but another run would score to make it 2-0 Ironmen. Whiteville answered immediately in the home half of the first inning. As he has done for the Wolfpack all postseason long, Mackenzie Gore kickstarted the Whiteville offense with a single to centerfield. After a walk to Taylor Smith, Conner Grainger grounded into a fielders choice at second base. On the throw to first for a potential double play, Cherryville s Will Walker was unable to handle the throw, and it allowed Gore to motor home to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. The Wolfpack would take their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Harwood doubled to left field off of Cherryville s Ray Sensing to start the frame. Whiteville s next batter, Grayson Ward singled to right field to tie the game at 2-2. Dylan Lawson followed by smacking a ground ball to first base, Cherryville was unable to record an out on the play after an error. Ward was able to score on the error after stealing second base earlier in Lawson s at-bat. After two innings, Whiteville led 3-2. After losing the lead on the mound a half inning prior, Brooks Baldwin started the bottom of the third for Whiteville with a double to gap in right center field. Baldwin s courtesy runner, Nydir Carr kept the roller coaster ride of a game going with a steal of third base, and a run scored on a Hunter Harwood sacrifice fly to right field that regained the lead for the Wolfpack at 4-3 heading to the fourth inning. It seemed as if anything that one team could do, the other one would be able to answer. Cherryville tied the game in the top of the fourth at 4-4. Dayne Homesley, and Austin Treadwell started the inning with singles to left field. An error from Hunter Cartrette in right field on a fly ball from Jonathan McSwain loaded the bases with nobody out in the Ironmen fourth. Ryan Owens brought home the equalizer when he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score Homesley from third base. An error on the first play of the game was the sign of a rough afternoon to come for South Granville, as East Rutherford lead-off man Holden Greene reached on a fielding error. Then Kendall McGowan laced a triple down the left field line to make it 1-0. East Rutherford ran away from there, coasting to an 8-0 win in game one of the 2A Baseball State Championship series. The Cavaliers batted around in the fourth inning when they added six more runs to their tally on just two hits in the inning, as three more South Granville errors spelled their undoing. After the top of the fourth explosion, East Rutherford led 7-0 and turned it over to starting pitcher Ethan Stewart. Stewart completely stymied the South Granville offense only allowing five hits in a complete game shutout. He struck out ten on the afternoon with only one walk. The Cavaliers added one more run in the fifth inning as Stewart led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI-single by Nick Strickland making it 8-0. East Rutherford looks to secure their sixth baseball state championship in school history with a win in game two of the series. South Granville slept on a 3-0 lead after the Vikings pounded out four singles scoring three runs in the top of the first with the help of a Cavalier error and one walk. The Vikings tacked on three more in the second as Justin Bullock doubled with one out before Austin Bailey singled to put runners on the corners. Justin Brown delivered both runs to the plate on a two-rbi double to the gap, and he came around to score on Spencer Shifflett s RBI single making it 6-1. The Cavaliers trimmed the lead in the bottom of the second as Adam Barnette ripped a one-out single and stole second before Nick Strickland s RBI double. Strickland came around to 22

GAME 3 - East Rutherford takes title, blasts to a 10-5 win over South Granville BURLINGTON, N.C. After taking a 9-3 loss in game two earlier that afternoon, East Rutherford jumped on South Granville early in game three, plating eight runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead and cruise to a 10-5 victory and 2A State Championship. The victory claimed the school s sixth baseball State Championship for head coach Bobby Reynolds, who tied three other coaches for the most State Championships won by a head coach with six in his career. Gehrig Christopher started off the rally with a one-out double and moved to third on a single by pitcher Kaleb Green. Then The Cavaliers got three and one-third innings of solid pitching from Kaleb Green who gave up five hits and four runs on the afternoon before exiting and turning the game over to Ethan Stewart. Stewart pitched a complete game shutout in game one of the series, an 8-0 East Rutherford victory, and he was strong in three and two-thirds of game three. He allowed a single run on just two hits on his way to the save and M.V.P. honors in the series. South Granville tried to battle back, adding a run in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Vikings had perhaps their most dangerous threat in the third inning as Tucker Brown and Justin Bullock led off with back-to-back singles before coming around to score on a two-out two-run single by Clay Walters. Walters was three for four in the game with two runs scored and three knocked in. East Rutherford right fielder Kendall McGowan was the top performer at the plate for the Cavaliers going three for four with a run scored and one batted in. He smacked two doubles in the outing. The Topsail Pirates shook off a tough start to game one of the NCHSAA 3A Baseball State Championship series storming back from three runs down to beat Marvin Ridge 6-3 and take the lead in the best-of-three series. After a shaky first inning of work that saw him give up three runs on five very hard hit balls, Topsail starting pitcher Payton Rice shut down the Maverick attack only allowing one more hit in his final six innings of work, and no more runs. Rice was nearly flawless in the final six innings of the game, striking out five batters on the night and only allowing four more base runners after the opening frame. His nice recovery allowed time for the Topsail offense to find their footing in the game against Marvin Ridge starter, Jake Kuchmaner, and four Marvin Ridge errors on the night helped the Pirate s cause. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the second, the Pirate got a leadoff single from Chase Riker who advanced to third on a throwing error off the bat of the next batter Garrett Myrka. The error left men at second and third with no outs and Riker came home on a wild pitch to break the ice for the Pirates. Myrka came around to score on the second Maverick error in the inning, trimming the Marvin Ridge lead to 3-2. The Pirates struck for three more in the top of the third when Bryce Cota worked a leadoff walk followed by a Sam Hall single. Riker bunted the runners over into scoring position and Myrka delivered a one-out RBI single to tie the game at 3. Then Colby Emmertz laced a two-out double to left plating two more runs and giving the Pirates a lead that they would not relinquish at 5-3. Topsail tacked on another run in the sixth as Josh Madole doubled before coming around to score on the fourth error in the game by the Mavericks. Chandler Castleberry hit two mammoth shots, both solo home runs, one in the fourth and the other in the Mavericks four-run fifth to power the Marvin Ridge attack. Teammate Kevin Dobos added a three-run shot in the fifth. Dobos finished the day with 4 RBI s. Topsail only mounted one real threat on the afternoon against the Maverick s starter Jason Cornatzer. The Pirates pushed runners to the corners with two outs in the fourth, but Cornatzer induced a fly ball to right to end the inning and maintain the shutout. Cornatzer worked the full seven innings, only allowing five hits on the afternoon with two strikeouts and no walks allowed. The Mavericks loaded the bases with three straight singles in the seventh then Demarco Reaves slapped a single to left to plate two more runs and build a 9-0 lead. The Mavericks tacked on another run as a fly ball was dropped with one out in the inning and that allowed Stephen Polacek to score making it 10-0. 26

Marvin Ridge bats were alive on day two of the 3A Baseball State Championships as the Mavericks plated ten runs in each of their two must-win games to surge to the 3A State Championship over Topsail, securing back-to-back championships for Marvin Ridge. Game three started out in much the same fashion that game two ended, with Marvin Ridge churning out runs at a high volume. The Mavericks posted five runs in the bottom of the first, answering a single score for Topsail in the top half of the frame, to take a 5-1 lead and not look back on the way to a 10-7 victory in game three. The Mavericks jumped all over Topsail freshman pitcher Aiden Smith, working five runs off of three hits, two walks and an error in the first inning. They followed up that with a run in the second and third inning each, before another big inning in the fourth where Marvin Ridge plated three runs and led 10-1. Three runs came home in the bottom of the fourth as LeShock reached on an error, moved to second on a balk, then Glover doubled to bring him home. Kevin Dobos and Castleberry each drew walks and Glover scored on a walk drawn by Connor Paul. Dobos crossed the plate on a passed ball making it 10-1. Topsail made things interesting down the stretch adding three runs in the fifth and again in the seventh. Sam Hall drew a lead-off walk in the seventh before Chase Riker took Mavericks starter Zach Zdimal deep to cut the Marvin Ridge lead to 10-6. 2016 4A Baseball Championship Recaps The Green Hope order in the top of the fourth would be the first of the ballgame to be retired 1-2-3, and it opened the doors for another North Davidson score in their half of the inning. After reaching base on a dropped third strike an inning prior, EP Reese was safe at first on an error by the Green Hope second baseman. Reese went first to third on a two out single by Landon Michael, and he would score on a wild pitch to Michael Johnson to make it 4-0 North Davidson. Green Hope starter, Mitch Spence ended his outing after a strike out of Johnson. The Falcon senior went four innings, allowing five hits, and four earned runs, along with three wild pitches, and four strikeouts. Isaac Fisher tossed a scoreless fifth inning for Green Hope, then fellow sophomore Joey Hegeman came on to pitch the sixth for coach Mike Miragliuolo and the Falcons. With one out in the North Davidson sixth, Hegeman hit Nick Tiller with a pitch. EP Reese followed with an RBI double to the gap in right center, and he promptly scored a batter later on a Jackson Meadows RBI single to close out the scoring a 6-0. The Black Knight offense backed their southpaw with runs in four of the six innings that they were at the plate for a 6-0 victory at Five County Stadium over Green Hope High School on Friday evening Beeker allowed only nine Falcon runners to reach base in the ballgame, and of those nine he was able to retire two on pickoff throws to first, and another two on double plays. In total, the 6 3 senior went seven innings, while allowing no runs on seven hits, with no walks, a hit batsman, and he registered five strikeouts. North Davidson was able to back their pitcher with some offense starting in the bottom of the second inning. Corey Joyce walked with two outs, and stole second base on a ball in the dirt to Jed Bryant. Two pitches later, Bryant poked a high fly ball down the right field line that skipped into the stands for a ground rule double. The hit scored Joyce and gave the Black Knights a 1-0 lead. An inning later, North Davidson s EP Reese reached on a dropped third strike to lead off the Black Knight third. Jackson Meadows followed with a single to center, and Landon Michael reached on a bunt to load the bases with nobody out. First Baseman Michael Johnson kept the line moving with an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Joe Butts grounded into a fielders choice to score another North Davidson run to send the two teams into the fourth inning at 3-0. 2016 4A Baseball Championship Recaps GAME 2 - Late Comeback in game 2 wins 4A State Championship for North Davidson By: Evan Moesta North Davidson completed a two game series sweep of Green Hope High School in the NCHSAA 4A Baseball State Championship at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. Down 2-0 heading to their final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning, the Black Knights scored five unearned runs to clinch the 5-2 victory. game two as Landon Michael took the hill to start for the Black Knights. After allowing the two runs to score in the second, Michael settled in to pitch four and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. The final hit allowed by Landon Michael on Saturday afternoon came to Trevor Losito, who once more shot a ball to the base of the wall in centerfield for a triple. Half of Green Hope s hits were of the three base variety as two runs came home on six hits, and a North Davidson error. Joe Butts started the improbable comeback for the Black Knights with a single to centerfield to start the top of the seventh. Corey Joyce was hit in the side by a Chris Joyner offering, then Jed Bryant lofted a flyball to shallow right field that was dropped after Green Hope second baseman Connor Knapp bumped into right fielder Joseph Nunn who was closing in on making the catch. The error loaded the bases for North Davidson with nobody out, and it forced head coach Mike Miragliuolo to make a visit to the mound for the first time on Saturday. Right-hander Nick Borgen closed out the ballgame for North Davidson with two and a third innings of perfect relief. He was credited as the winning pitcher, Chris Joyner was credited with the loss for Green Hope. Jordan Montgomery got the final three outs of the seventh for the Falcons with only one hit allowed. before Perry and Epling s late-game heroics. NCHSAA 4A Baseball State Championship Game 2: Green Hope vs. North Davidson Five County Stadium, Zebulon, NC Chris Joyner came out of the visit by issuing a bases loaded walk to freshman pinch hitter Jake Brown to score a run, and cut the Falcon lead to 2-1. Black Knight leadoff hitter EP Reese was due up next, and he tapped a swinging bunt back to the mound. In desperation, Joyner scooped the ball and launched an errant throw home to score two runs. Reese moved to second base on the back end of the play after giving his team a 3-2 lead. North Davidson shortstop Jackson Meadows grounded into a fielders choice to score Brown and make it 4-2, then Michael Johnson poked a two out RBI single to the outfield to put the Western Regional Champions ahead 5-2. Green Hope cruised through the opening six innings behind the left arm of their ace pitcher Chris Joyner. The senior went six-plus innings pitched, allowing five runs (all unearned in the seventh) on four hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. Joyner worked around a ground rule double in the first, then retired the Black Knights in order in the second inning. He had his strikeout pitch going in inning number three when he sent both Nick Tiller, and fellow UNC-Wilmington baseball commit Jackson Meadows back to the dugout swinging at strike three. Joyner cruised through innings four, five, and six with only one hit, and one walk allowed. After being shutout through the first eight innings of this weekend s series, Green Hope finally broke the ice in the bottom of the second inning. Joesph Nunn shot a ground ball into left field for a one out knock, then Trevor Losito peppered the ball to the wall in dead center field for an RBI triple. Losito s second inning three bagger was the Falcons second in as many innings as Drew Hegeman was able to motor to third base on a first inning hit to right. Freshman Kohl Abrams lofted a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Losito for the second out of the second giving Green Hope a 2-0 lead.
