Ellen Murray added nine kills to go along with her two solo blocks and seven block assists. Sobczak chipped in with a personal best five block assists. Head Coach Diane Seymour If there is one name that goes hand-in-hand with the overall success of the UT Arlington volleyball program, it is third-year head coach Diane Seymour. The Arlington native has been a part of the Maverick program since stepping foot on campus in the fall of 1984. In her 16 years on the UTA campus, Seymour has helped the Maverick program to 324 victories, seven Southland Conference championships, six NCAA Tournament appearances and a No.-5 national ranking at the end of the 1988 season. Seymour returned to her alma mater in 1996 as an assistant coach on Janine Smith s staff. In her eight years as an assistant, the team captured two regular season championships and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, while never finishing lower than fourth in the conference. Just three weeks prior to the start of two-a-days in 2004, Seymour was named the interim head coach. With a young squad featuring six freshman and just two seniors, the Diane Seymour era began with a thrilling five-game victory over Baylor. The Mavericks trailed 13-9 in the deciding game but climbed back to defeat the Bears for the first time since 1990, 23-30, 31-29, 23-30, 30-28, 17-15. The victory in the opener was only the beginning as the Mavericks rattled off 13 victories in their first 15 games and ended the season with an overall record of 24-7 and a 15-5 mark in conference play, good enough for third place. The 15 conference victories marked just the fourth time the team has won at least 15 conference matches in a season. On the way, the team captured tournament titles at the Western New York Invite and the UTA Invitational. Individual success also followed the team as four players went on to earn all-conference accolades. Junior outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp became the first all-slc first team selection since 2002, while seniors Heather Dunn and Caley Smith earned second team honors. Freshman Morgan Rogers earned honorable mention laurels. After the successful year in an interim role, Director of Athletics Pete Carlon named Seymour the sixth head coach in UTA history on Nov. 22, 2004. The 2005 season is one that Seymour and the Mavs would like to forget as numerous injuries and tough breaks helped lead to a 6-21 record. Van Antwerp continued her solid play as she earned third team all-slc honors. Seymour came to UTA in 1984, but missed all of the season after undergoing knee surgery. She worked her way into the lineup in 1985 and contributed 18 kills, 24 digs and 12 service aces in 24 matches as the team went on to go 28-4 and make the school s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team was not satisfied with just making the tournament in 1986 as the team went 29-10, captured its second straight conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. UTA hosted Texas State in an opening round game and defeated the Bobcats in four games before falling in three games to LSU. Seymour would collect 44 service aces on the season, including a school-record eight against Oklahoma on Oct. 15, 1986. Coming off her second knee surgery, Seymour collected 21 service aces and 110 digs in helping her team to a 32-7 record and their third-straight conference title. The 32 wins is the most by any team since NCAA play began in 1982. The team would knock off Arizona State in an opening round match before falling to Kentucky in the regional semis. Seymour captained the 1988 squad to 30-4 record and a No. 5 ranking in the final AVCA polls. The team would earn tournament victories over Pepperdine and Kentucky before falling to eventual national champion Texas in Austin. Seymour finished her playing career with 48 kills, 95 service aces and 433 digs in 119 matches and 313 games. Including her red-shirt year, the Mavs went 140-41. Seymour came to Arlington after earning all-state honors at Arlington High School in 1983. She began her career at Arlington Bowie High School, playing for her college coach Lisa Love. Seymour earned her bachelor s degree from UTA in 1989. After her playing career ended, Seymour worked closely with several of the best club teams in Texas and is currently the director of the North Dallas Junior Volleyball Association. Texas State Tidbits The enter the match with an overall record of 9-14 and a 5-4 mark in conference play. The Bobcats are in the midst of a twogame SLC losing streak after dropping a pair of road matches at Central Arkansas and Northwestern State last week. Outside hitter Lawrencia Brown leads the team and ranks second in the conference in kills at 4.31 kills a game. She also ranks third on the team at 2.60 digs a game. Setter Erin Hickman has come back from injury and assumed the setting duties. She is averaging 10.47 assists a game in 37 games this season. Arlington native Kasey Wimpy leads the Cats in digs at 3.39 a game. Mavs Sweep SLC Honors The UT Arlington volleyball swept the weekly Southland Conference honors as setter Emily Nedderman was named the offensive player of the week and outside hitter Dani Johnson earned defensive. The honors were the first for both players and it was the third time since 2001 the Mavs have swept the weekly honors. Another Five Setter For the seventh time this season, the Mavs were forced to go five sets against McNeese State. UTA is 6-1 in those contests. The six five-set wins in a season is the most since rally scoring was implemented prior to the 2001 season. Two of the five victories have come after the team has fallen behind 0-2. UTA Invitational Honors Senior libero Ashley Smith and junior setter Emily Nedderman were named to the seven-member all-tournament team at the Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational. All-Tournament Honors Outside Hitter Dani Johnson and middle blocker Ellen Murray were named to the all-tournament team at the Radisson Hotel/Mustang Classic. Block Party The Mavs front line has been hosting a block party this season. As a team, UTA leads the Southland Conference at 2.65 blocks a game. The Mavs had a season-high 30 block assists against TCU and Tulsa, 28 against Utah State, and 26 against Toledo and Louisiana Tech. Ellen Murray is leading the way with 113 block assists and is followed by Emily Nedderman with 92 and Gina Kalb 85. Kalb leads the way with 10 solos. Triple-Doubles After recording one triple-double in her sophomore year, setter Emily Nedderman has recorded an NCAA-best four during the 2006 campaign. Her first came in the victory over TCU where she recorded 49 assists, 10 digs and 10 block assists. Her second came in the victory over Duquesne when she had 11 kills, 59 assists and 10 digs. She needed only three games to get her third as she had 11 kills, 40 assists and 10 digs against Arkansas-Little Rock. Her most recent one came in a four-set victory over Lamar when she had 10 kills, 40 assists and 12 digs. Home Openers For the second time in the last three home openers, the UTA volleyball team gave the crowd a thrill as they rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat local rival TCU 3-2. In 2004, the Mavs rallied to defeat Baylor 3-2 in the first match for head coach Diane Seymour. Three Straight Openers The season-opening victory over Seton Hall was the third straight season-opening victory for UT Arlington. The Mavs own victories over Baylor, Prairie View A&M and Seton Hall. Smith Earns SLC Honor Senior libero Ashley Smith was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 7.00 digs a game in three matches at the Asics/Delaware Invitational. She recorded 25 digs in the opener against Seton Hall and added 19 digs against Marist and 26 against Delaware.

Sobczak Makes Immediate Impact Freshman outside hitter Teena Sobczak had no problems adjusting to the college game and made an immediate impact as she recorded double-digit kills in 18 matches this season. She also has 16 double-digit dig matches and 15 doubledoubles on the season. She ranks ninth all-time for kills by a freshman with 289 and seventh in digs with 324. Three Players Earn All-Tourney Team Juniors Ellen Murray and Emily Nedderman, along with freshman Teena Sobczak were named to the all-tournament team at the Asics/Delaware Invitational. Keeping Up With the Smith s Looking at the UTA roster and seeing the name Smith has been a constant since the 1994 season. The trend started when Janine Smith was named head coach in February of 1994. She was joined by outside hitter Caley Smith during the 2001 season and later younger sister, Ashley, joined the team in 2003. The 2003 squad featured three Smith s. Janine resigned after the 2003 season and Caley s career ended in 2004, leaving Ashley as the only one to carry on the name.
