GOLD RUSH OF TALENT FROM THE GOLDEN STATE GOING FOR THE SILVER CUP In NHL history, there have been relatively very few NHL players hailing from the state of California. Predominantly, those NHL payers that were from the Golden State were very likely born within state lines but moved away at an early age, playing their formative years of hockey elsewhere. Those times are changing as more and more high-end players are being born in the state and honing their skills in Northern and Southern California youth hockey programs, such as the Jr. Sharks. Others, who may have been born elsewhere but have relocated to California, are now playing the formative years here as opposed to having to go elsewhere to play competitive hockey. In the past six NHL Drafts (2010-2015), there have been seven kids born and raised in California taken in the first or second round of the draft, including San Jose s Matt Nieto (2011, 2 nd round) from Long Beach. Here is a look at the leaders on the NHL s career scoring list for California born or raised players. Players in italics are active.
