Free agency giveth and taketh? It was slightly more complex than that. For unrestricted free-agent defenseman Rob Scuderi, it was a matter of geography and family issues, causing him to leave the Kings for his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Scuderi signed a four-year deal worth $13.5 million, making him the first significant member of the Kings' Stanley Cupwinning team to move on. Free-agent dominoes helped trigger a trade between the Ducks and Ottawa, sending dynamic forward Bobby Ryan to the Senators in exchange for winger Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick in 2014. The pick is not lottery protected. Ryan represented the trade of day in the NHL after the Senators watched their captain and spiritual leader Daniel Alfredsson unexpectedly leave for Detroit. After the Senators missed out on free agent David Clarkson, they went after Ryan and sweetened the offer, upping the draft choice to a firstrounder from a second-rounder. "It was the best hockey deal I was offered," Ducks General Manager Bob Murray said. "When you're trading a guy the caliber of Bobby, you've got to get a deal that helps you now and helps you in the future." The deal helps the Ducks become more cap compliant since the long-term, massive contracts of captain Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry kick in this season. Ryan's cap hit will be $5.1 million and Silfverberg offers a far cheaper alternative at $900,000. Plus, Ryan scored only one more goal than Silfverberg (10) last season. Silfverberg is projected as a top-six forward. In another move, the Ducks re-signed center Saku Koivu to a one-year extension worth $2.5 million. Murray said there was no news on the Teemu Selanne front but expected to be talking with Selanne soon. Ryan has lived under the cloud of trade rumors, most of them sending him to his hometown Philadelphia Flyers. "I was on high alert at the draft last week and I thought if anything was going to happen, it would happen right away," he said. "I thought we were maybe going to go into another season and deal with it then. "I can't stress how happy I am to be past it all. I couldn't have asked for a better place to go. I'm just happy that I can push restart. And try this whole thing again and not have to deal with it, day in and day out." Alfredsson's move to Detroit had been the most-stunning development on Day 1 of free agency until Jarome Iginla agreed to a deal with Boston, the same place he was headed in March before he turned down the deal to go to Pittsburgh. Ryan wisely noted that there is only one Alfredsson, who had seemed destined to stay with the Senators his entire career until uprooting for Detroit. "I don't think Daniel Alfredsson, after what he's done the last how many years, is ever going to be replaced," Ryan said. "I'm not going to try to do that. Replacing Alfie is not going to happen." Besides the Scuderi news, the Kings lost another free agent and signed one. Center Brad Richardson, who had been with the organization since 2008, agreed to a two-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks. Earlier, the Kings signed defenseman Jeff Schultz, who was just bought out by the Washington Capitals. He had watched his minutes decline in Washington after coach Bruce Boudreau was fired and had asked for a trade. His one-year deal with the Kings is worth $700,000, and he was asked whether it represented a fresh start. "It does, for sure. That's what I wanted. I've been in Washington for six years," Schultz said. "They did a lot for me. It was just time in my career for a fresh start, a new beginning. I think going to a team like L.A. that has won, and knows how to win, could be beneficial for me." Scuderi was looking at the last chance to play closer to home. The Kings tried hard to keep him and made him a strong offer earlier in the week. He played for the Penguins for five-plus years, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2009, and acknowledged the decision was difficult. "When I think of the final points that came to my decision, I thought that both teams have the ability to play deep into the spring," Scuderi said. "But Pittsburgh is much closer geographically to where I am from. And I thought at my age, I wasn't going to get this opportunity again to pull the trigger on something like this. "My parents are still on Long Island. My wife's parents are still on Long Island. To be able to play those teams consistently and have Pittsburgh be a one-hour flight, as compared to a cross-country flight is something that I've missed over the last few years. I've missed having them be part of our lives and their grandkids lives." LA Times: LOADED: 07.06.2013 683952 Anaheim Ducks Ducks deal Ryan to Ottawa, clear salary cap space By ERIC STEPHENS 2013-07-05 20:54:11 Years of rumors finally became reality Friday and the high-scoring Bobby Ryan is no longer a member of the Ducks. The Ducks traded the perennial 30-goal scorer to the Ottawa Senators for forward Jakob Silfverberg, top prospect Stefan Noesen and the Senators' first-round pick in 2014. Instead of Philadelphia, where he was long rumored to eventually play for his hometown Flyers, Ryan is headed to Canada's capital city. Ryan confirmed the deal, posting on his Twitter account: Ottawa... Im coming in hot. It was the best hockey deal that was offered, Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. When you're trading a guy the caliber of Bobby, you've got to get a deal that helps you now and helps you in the future. And that's what we were looking for. Often a part of trade talk, both real and imagined, throughout his five-plus NHL seasons with the Ducks, Ryan leaves having scored 146 goals and compiling 142 assists in 377games. He topped the 30-goal total in four consecutive years from 2008-09 to 2011-12. But Ryan struggled in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign, scoring just 11times.

There is also a significant financial aspect. The Ducks clear salary cap space as the winger will make $5,562,500 (a $5.1 million cap hit) in 2013-14 and 2014-15, the final two years of his contract. Silfverberg and Noesen are still on entry-level deals, with Noesen signed until 2016. The Ducks made official the re-signing of center Saku Koivu, who flourished on the third line last season. He will make a base salary of $2.5 million. Murray said the Ryan deal to add financial flexibility wasn't leading up to another move at least not on Friday. Not at the moment, but it sure gives me a lot more opportunity, he said. We were far too close (to the salary cap) before. I was not comfortable. We did not enjoy those years where every morning you'd wake up and have to figure out if you're over or under. This gives us room if another good hockey deal comes along. Ottawa GM Bryan Murray was able to find a younger and, for now, potentially better replacement for longtime captain and beloved franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson, who left for Detroit after 17 seasons. Well, I think we got a star in Bobby Ryan, the former Ducks coach and GM said at a news conference. He's over a 30-goal scorer each and every year, he's a big, strong guy, he has played behind two very good players in Anaheim in (Ryan) Getzlaf and (Corey) Perry. I think now he gets a chance to come along as a No. 1-line player in our team. Ryan told the Ottawa Citizen: For it to happen this way, I couldn't be happier. It's like a restart, not having to deal with (trade rumors) day in and day out. The Ducks have about $11.7 million available under the salary cap, according to CapGeek.com. It remains to be seen if they'll target any of the top remaining free agents, who include Mikhail Grabovski, Derek Roy and Brenden Morrow. Orange County Register: LOADED: 07.06.2013 683953 Anaheim Ducks Ducks may have gotten ahead of themselves By MARK WHICKER 2013-07-05 18:06:11 The oft-told story has new General Manager Brian Burke in the Ducks' office, asking his staff where the 2005 draft drops off. "After the first pick," assistant GM Chuck Fletcher tells him. Humpf. The Ducks had the second pick, thanks to a lottery arranged at the end of The Big Lockout. So Sidney Crosby went to Pittsburgh, and Bobby Ryan came to the Ducks and then went to Owen Sound, at the time the Siberia of the Ontario Hockey League, to learn and play and wait. Until Friday we saw Ryan, that No. 2 pick, mature and persevere and become a U.S. Olympian and a four-time 30-goal scorer in the NHL. We saw his skater's-waltz goal against the Kings one night, and saw an even more ingenious goal against Nashville in the playoffs. We saw him deal head-on with annual trade rumors, and contract negotiations, and with being shifted on and off the glory line that was headed by Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. We saw a kid put aside his own childhood travails, by dutifully telling the story of Bobby Stevenson to the point that nobody ever mentions it anymore. We saw Bobby Ryan learn a lot and teach just as much, and now he's off to Ottawa, thanks to hockey economics, plus the cloud that persistently follows a player when good is never quite good enough. "He was an outstanding Duck," GM Bob Murray said, after he traded Ryan to the Senators for winger Jakob Silfverberg, 22, winger Stefan Noesen, 19, and Ottawa's first-round pick next June. In a normal 2012-2013 season he might have been outstanding again. But in 46 games he scored 11 goals and was only plus-2 on a team that went 30-12-6. Despite his numbers he was never the ideal fit with Getzlaf and Perry, since all three need the puck. He had trouble moonlighting as a second-line center. He wasn't always thrilled when Bruce Boudreau began shuffling lines, which was most of the time. And the Ducks weren't always thrilled with his defense. Ryan was in the sweet spot because he had two years left in a contract that pays $5.1 million each year. That makes him a major bargain, especially in a world where the remnants of Ryane Clowe will now make $24.5 million over five years with New Jersey. Since the Ducks went big to keep Getzlaf and Perry, they needed to crawl out of their salary cap MRI. Ryan was one of the few Ducks who seemed somewhat expendable but also could bring value. Now we'll see how expendable he is, especially when the Ducks need goals next season. The Ducks also brought back Saku Koivu for another year but still need a second-line center. Murray declared he is not going to sign anyone for "term," meaning long-term, which probably means more than three years. That would appear to put a crimp in efforts to sign a centerman such as Derek Roy, Mikhail Grabovski or, most promisingly, Damien Brunner, but Murray rules nothing out. Murray said it was time for a homegrown player to become that center, which was a message to Nick Bonino and Peter Holland. One phone call could change that. Murray also said the answers on defense lie in kids such as Sami Vaatanen and Hampus Lindholm, 19, the top draft pick in 2012. If you're looking for a theme, it's clear. The Ducks are producing what they hope is a long-running series called "The Young And The Swedish." And who can possibly argue with that? Counting Silfverberg and Noesen, the Ducks have nine forwards who are 25 or younger. Silfverberg, Rickard Rakell (who was Noesen's OHL teammate at Plymouth) and Max Friberg are Swedish, as is Lindholm. Add that to the presence of marketable goalies Jonas Hiller, Viktor Fasth and John Gibson, and the Ducks have a chance to be the rock stars of the 2014 trade deadline. "We have a lot of bullets we can fire now," Murray said. "We're building our depth back up to where it should be. It was tough, waking up every morning and wondering if we were over or under (the salary cap). Now we have a little flexibility and it's nice to see. If we're close, we can do something now.'' To stay that close, the onus falls on Silfverberg, who, as a rookie, tied for second among Ottawa's goal-scorers, with 10. He also was the MVP in the Swedish Elite League and served as a 20-year-old captain. Lost in the youth movement is the fact that Bobby Ryan, with all the curves in his journey, is only 26, nowhere near dropoff. Orange County Register: LOADED: 07.06.2013 683954 Anaheim Ducks NHL: Anaheim Ducks trade Bobby Ryan to Ottawa; get Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and 2014 first-round draft pick By Elliott Teaford, Staff Writer Posted: 07/05/2013 03:05:57 PM PDT Updated: 07/05/2013 03:29:40 PM PDT Bobby Ryan was traded again and again and again over the last three years on the Internet, most often going to Philadelphia in dozens of rumored deals that never transpired. The Ducks shipped him for real Friday, sending him to Ottawa for two young players and a draft pick.

"Ottawa... Im coming in hot," Ryan wrote on his Twitter account, breaking the news. The Ducks received right wing Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick in 2014 from the Senators, whose general manager Bryan Murray held the same job with the Ducks from 2002-04 and was their coach in 2001-02. Silfverberg, 22, scored 10 goals and added nine assists in 48 games during his rookie season with the Senators in 2012-13. He was the MVP of the Swedish Elite League after he had 54 points, including 24 goals, in 49 games in 2011-12. Noesen, 20, was the Senators' second-round choice in 2011 (21st overall) and scored 220 points (99 goals, 121 assists) over the last four seasons with the junior-level Plymouth (Mich.) Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. He hails from the Dallas suburb of Plano. Ryan was the Ducks' third-leading scorer with 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 46 games during the lockout-shortened season. The 26-year-old left wing teamed with center Ryan Getzlaf and right wing Corey Perry to form the Ducks' top line for most of his six seasons. There was no question as to his value to the Ducks, but with Getzlaf and Perry signing eight-season contract extensions last winter worth worth $66 million and $69 million, respectively, Ryan's $5,562,500 salary for the next two seasons was an extravagance they couldn't afford. By trading Ryan, the Ducks increased their salary cap space to $11.7 million from roughly $7 million before the deal, according to the website capgeek.com. They can use the extra cash to re-sign several of their own free agents, including veteran forwards Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu. "Best of luck to @b_ryan9 in Ottawa. Great team mate and will be greatly missed here in Anaheim. Senators got a hell of a player," Perry wrote on Twitter. "Also would like to welcome the new Ducks coming over from Ottawa @jsilfverberg33 @stefannoesen." LA Daily News: LOADED: 07.06.2013 683955 Anaheim Ducks Hockey: Ducks still await word from Teemu Selanne By Elliott Teaford @ElliottTeaford on Twitter Posted: 07/04/2013 10:36:11 PM PDT Updated: 07/04/2013 10:39:13 PM PDT The news reports from Helsinki were difficult to translate precisely into English from Finnish on Thursday, but the gist of it was Teemu Selanne hasn't made up his mind about signing a new contract and returning to play for the Ducks next season. "Just to be sure, I'm working out," Selanne said during a news conference to announce the release date of a documentary film about his life and times on and off the ice, one day after he celebrated his 43rd birthday. "But I would be doing it anyway."meanwhile, half a world away, inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, Ducks general manager Bob Murray worked the phones in an attempt to improve a club that finished with the third-best record in the NHL last season (30-12-6), but flamed out in the first round of the playoffs. The window to sign free agents opens today at 9 a.m. (PDT). Selanne offered a bit of unsolicited long-distance advice to Murray as the hour to begin signing free agents ticked down. Selanne said the Ducks should sign his countryman Valtteri Filppula, a free-agent center who played last season with the Detroit Red Wings. Reports indicated Selanne then left the news conference for a on-ice workout. Re-signing Selanne was a priority, but there were other moves to be explored. Murray is accustomed to waiting for Selanne to determine whether he wants to keep playing or retire and await the call for his enshrinement in the Hall of Fame in Toronto. It's been the same every summer since 2007, when Selanne helped lead the Ducks to the Stanley Cup championship and then couldn't decide whether to keep playing or call it a career. The Ducks were willing to wait for him then and they're content to be patient again this summer. Selanne calls Anaheim his "happy place." He and his family settled comfortably in Orange County a long time ago and there's zero chance he would play elsewhere if the Ducks declined to re-sign him. He doesn't come cheap, but didn't exactly break the bank last season at $4.5 million, either. Unlike past seasons, when he was without question one of the Ducks' top players, there were doubts about his play down the stretch of the lockoutshortened 2012-13 season. It certainly looked as if he'd lost a step during the Ducks' first-round playoff loss to the Red Wings. Years ago, he said he wouldn't want to keep playing if he had to play as a third-line checker. Last season, he had only 12 goals and 12 assists in 46 games and his role was reduced considerably as he played on the Ducks' third line and served as a power-play specialist. Selanne had a team-leading 66 points, including 26 goals, in 82 games in 2011-12, and it was clear he not only was the face of the franchise but its top offensive threat. He wasn't the same player one season later, but some of that might have had to do with the lockout-compressed schedule. There are plenty of reasons for Selanne to return to the Ducks, starting with the fact they surprised everyone in the league with a superb regular season in which they won only the second Pacific Division in franchise history and were second overall in the Western Conference. The Ducks and Kings also are scheduled to play outdoors at Dodger Stadium next January, the first game in league history held under the Southern California moonlight. It would give Selanne a chance to play in front of a crowd that could be 55,000 or more. Last, but not least, Selanne could join Finland for a sixth Olympics if the NHL decides to send its players to Sochi for the 2014 Games. He is the alltime leading scorer in Olympic history with 37 points, including 20 goals, in 31 games and won silver in 2006 and bronze in 2002 and 2010. KINGS RE-SIGN ELLERBY The Kings agreed to a one-season deal with defensive-minded defenseman Keaton Ellerby, who played 35 games for them last season after they acquired him Feb. 7 from the Florida Panthers for a fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft. Ellerby, 24, had three assists and 16 penalty minutes during the regular season and also played five games during the playoffs. The 6-foot-5, 221- pound Ellerby also played nine games for the Panthers last season and did not record a goal or an assist. General manager Dean Lombardi hope to re-sign defenseman Rob Scuderi, an unrestricted free agent. Scuderi sounded interested when asked about a possible return to the Kings when he met with reporters after the team was eliminated from the playoffs last month. "As a player, this is a place that is certainly a desirable location," said Scuderi, who has played four seasons with the Kings. "It's got everything you need, for myself and more importantly for my family. "The team's good. I'm comfortable here." LA Daily News: LOADED: 07.06.2013 683956 Boston Bruins MAJOR RECENT BOSTON SPORTS TRADES By Boston.com Staff The Bruins and Celtics have shocked Boston fans with major trades involving superstars, with the Celtics trading future Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett and the Bruins sending off Tyler Seguin, their 2010 No. 2 overall pick and a contributor on the 2011 Stanley Cup team.

With these two deals now in the rearview mirror, here's a look back on some of the most headline-grabbing trades in recent Boston sports history. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683957 Boston Bruins Bruins free agent watch Posted by Matt Pepin, Boston.com Staff July 5, 2013 03:42 PM The free agent signing period in the NHL opened Friday, and the Bruins have completed several deals while also seeing some former players land new deals. Here's a review: Signings Jarome Iginla: The forward who spurned the Bruins at last season's trade deadline has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $6 million deal to come to Boston. Chad Johnson: Goaltender signed a one-year, one-way contract with a cap figure of $600,000. Bobby Robins: Forward signed a two-year, two-way contract. Salary is $600,000 at NHL level, $100,000 in AHL. Nick Johnson: Signed one-year, two-way deal worth $600,000 in NHL and $200,000 in AHL. Mike Moore: Signed a two-way, one-year contract worth $550,000 in NHL and $150,000 in AHL. Departures Nathan Horton: The first-line forward signed a seven-year, $37.1 million deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets. "This is a team on the rise with great players and I'm looking forward to being a part of it," Horton said. Andrew Ference: The defenseman signed a four-year, $13 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers. Ference is from Edmonton. He spent seven seasons in Boston. Anton Khudobin: The backup goaltender signed a one-year, $800,000 deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. Anton proved to be a very capable NHL backup for the Bruins last year, Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said. This solidifies an elite goaltending tandem for the Hurricanes. Aaron Johnson: The defenseman who played 10 games with the Bruins has signed a one-year, $600,000 deal with the New York Rangers. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683958 Boston Bruins Oilers sign D Ference away from Bruins AP / July 5, 2013 EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Edmonton Oilers added experience to their defense on the first day of free agency, signing Andrew Ference on Friday. Ference signed a four-year, $13 million deal, a hefty raise from his last contract with the Boston Bruins. The 34-year-old Edmonton native was a key part of the Bruins run to the Stanley Cup final, though there was no room for him to return to Boston because of salary-cap issues and young defensemen in their system. Ference joins a defense that includes Justin Schultz, Ladislav Smid and Nick Schultz. In 760 career games, Ference has 37 goals and 156 assists. He was a part of the Bruins Cup champion team in 2011. The Oilers also signed a pair of ex-coyotes center Boyd Gordon and goaltender Jason Labarbera. Gordon signed a three-year deal with Edmonton. He has 122 points in 486 games with Washington and Phoenix. Labarbera signed a one-year contract. The veteran backup spent the past four seasons with the Coyotes. The Oilers also added former New York Islanders forward Jesse Joensuu, Will Acton and Ryan Hamilton. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683959 Boston Bruins Blue Jackets lock up Bruins' Nathan Horton By RUSTY MILLER / AP Sports Writer / July 5, 2013 A penguin not one from Pittsburgh helped deliver Nathan Horton to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Horton, a 28-year-old, playoff-hardened free-agent right wing, signed a seven-year deal on Friday worth $37.1 million with the Blue Jackets. He left the Boston Bruins, with which he won the 2011 Stanley Cup and went to the finals this year. During a visit to the city on Wednesday to talk with team officials, Horton, his wife Tammy, 5-year-old son Dylan and 15-month-old Zach, joined Blue Jackets director of hockey operations John Davidson on a trip to the Columbus Zoo. They brought out all the baby animals. We got to see a big cheetah, they brought him out of the cage and it was pretty cool, Horton said with a laugh. Not too many people get to do that. It was really exciting; it was kind of scary at the same time. Dylan loves penguins. So the zoo brought one out so he could pet it. The family was won over. It was unbelievable, Davidson said. They brought a penguin out and the little guy was holding a penguin! I even went over and gave him a little pet. Horton said he felt at home everywhere he went around Ohio s capital city. This is the place I wanted to be, he said. It feels like home. Horton, who still needs offseason shoulder surgery which may sideline him until at least December, provides the Blue Jackets with punch it lacked a year ago when it just missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker. The recovery is 4 to 6 months; I'm hoping it s 4, Horton said of the rehab from surgery which he hopes to have within the next week or two. I just want to be 100 percent and come back and never have a problem with it again. Columbus finished finishing 25th in the NHL in goals. Horton has averaged 23 goals over the last eight seasons. He was the No. 1 guy on our list, Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. We went after him and got him. The Blue Jackets are built around Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who recently signed a two-year contract. The club badly needed a scoring threat to go with Marian Gaborik and several rising young forwards. The signing was one of the biggest free-agent moves ever by the franchise, which made a surprising leap into playoff contention after dawdling near the NHL cellar for the first third of last year s abbreviated season. The Blue Jackets have made the playoffs just once in their 12 seasons, and were swept by Detroit in that one trip in 2009. Horton said he realized that some people in Boston might not be able to understand the move. I'm thankful for my opportunity in Boston. I met a lot of great people, I've had great teammates, I had a great time there, he said. I just think that to be in this city, it s a great opportunity for me and my family to be in a house and for it to be a little bit more quiet. That s what I was looking for.

Horton s new contract will result in a $5.3-million cap hit. He'll collect $29 million in the first five years of the contract. Davidson was angry that panelists on a TV sports show out of Canada put down Horton for coming to Columbus, saying that he was going into the woods or moving to Green Acres. Family is a big part of this, Davidson said. Columbus is a terrific city. It has so much to offer. A skilled player with an edge, Horton was a central figure in the Bruins run to winning the 2011 Stanley Cup and in their trip to the finals this past season. He injured his shoulder in this year s playoffs. Horton held off getting the operation until his new team s doctors were involved. He also had a concussion in January 2012 that caused him to miss the remainder of that season. He also missed the last four Stanley Cup finals games in 2011 because of a concussion. Obviously, we'd like to have him right away, but it s a long-term commitment, Kekalainen said. There s going to be lots of hockey left after he gets his shoulder fixed. We have realistic expectations based on our doctors reports that he'll be back in December when there'll still be over 50 games to play. The Blue Jackets are considered by many to be a franchise that has turned the corner after years of bad drafts, bad trades and bad luck. They went on a 19-5-5 run to finish last season to tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West but lost out on a tiebreaker. Horton said he was ready to contribute as soon as he s healthy. I want to bring what I can to the team: scoring goals, battling, putting pucks on the net like a power forward does, he said. But I'll do anything it takes, wherever I'm slotted and wherever the coach wants me to play. I want to be in the playoffs and everybody else does (here) and we've got the team to do it. That s why I'm so excited. There s a buzz going around here. I felt it since I got here. There is no disputing Horton s effectiveness in the postseason, particularly for a club striving not only to make the playoffs but also to win there for the first time. This past season, he had the seven goals and 12 assists and a remarkable +20 plus/minus rating in the Bruins 22 playoff games that ended with a six-game loss to Chicago in the finals. During Boston s run to the title in 2011, he had eight goals and nine assists in 21 games before being injured. He put up 13 goals and nine assists in 43 regular-season games with the Bruins during the truncated 2013 season. Horton was the fouth-overall pick by the Florida Panthers in 2003, and then was traded just over three years ago to the Bruins. It was not a coincidence that Boston suddenly became a Stanley Cup contender soon after, with Norton a valuable leader of the club. He has totaled 198 goals and 204 assists with 543 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of plus-57 in his 591 career NHL games. The Blue Jackets also signed minor-league forward Cody Bass, goaltender Jeremy Smith, forward Ryan Craig and defenseman Thomas Larkin to contracts. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683960 Boston Bruins Bruins lose out on Daniel Alfredsson Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 5, 2013 12:13 PM The Bruins have failed in their pursuit of Daniel Alfredsson. The former Ottawa captain has chosen the Red Wings over the Bruins, according to TSN. The Bruins chased Alfredsson during the interview period. Alfredsson would have been Nathan Horton s replacement as the No. 1 right wing next to Milan Lucic and David Krejci. The Bruins will have to look elsewhere to fill their holes at right wing. They are down Horton, Jaromir Jagr, Tyler Seguin, and Rich Peverley. Loui Eriksson could be their No. 2 right wing. GM Peter Chiarelli wants a shooter to play alongside Lucic and Krejci. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683961 Boston Bruins BRUINS FREE AGENT POSSIBILITIES By Jeff Pini / Boston.com Correspondent Now that the 2013 NHL season has come to a close, teams are working on solidifying their rosters for 2013-14, with free agency officially beginning on July 5. After the Bruins fell just short of their second Stanley Cup championship in three seasons, Boston has some significant holes to fill before the team begins training camp on Sept. 12. Here's a look at some of the players available on the free agent market that general manager Peter Chiarelli could pick up to complete the Bruins' puzzle. Boston Globe LOADED: 07.06.2013 683962 Boston Bruins Bruins get Iginla this time, ink 1-year-deal AP / July 5, 2013 BOSTON (AP) After the Boston Bruins failed to get Jarome Iginla at the trade deadline, they grabbed him in free agency. The longtime Calgary Flames forward, who was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in March, signed a one-year deal with the Bruins on Friday. The right wing will have a base salary of $1.8 million along with $4.2 million in available incentives, which gives him a $6 million salary cap charge. The 36-year-old Iginla entered this past season having scored at least 30 goals 11 straight times. He registered 14 goals and 33 points in 44 games between Calgary and Pittsburgh, and then had four goals and eight assists in 15 postseason games with the Penguins. In 1,232 NHL regular-season games, Iginla had 530 goals and 576 assists. He is 32nd on the NHL s career goal list and 57th with 1,106 points. Iginla has added 32 goals and 29 assists in 69 career playoff games. In other moves Friday, the Bruins signed goalie Chad Johnson to a oneyear, $600,000 deal. Boston gave forward Bobby Robins a two-year, twoway contract; forward Nick Johnson a one-year, two-way deal; and defenseman Mike Moore a two-way, one-year contract. Iginla spurned the Bruins advances at the trade deadline in March and chose to go to Pittsburgh. He had a no-trade clause in the final year of his contract with Calgary and narrowed his list of teams he would accept a trade to when it was clear the Flames wanted to move him. The Flames and Bruins agreed to a trade, but Iginla nixed it when he decided he wanted to play with Sidney Crosby and the Penguins instead. Boston swept the Penguins in the Eastern Conference finals, but the Bruins will have a much different look next season than they did last month when they lost to Chicago in the Stanley Cup finals. Nathan Horton signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, and Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley were traded to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Knowing he was losing Horton and not expecting Jaromir Jagr to return to Boston, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said it was his goal to reconstruct the right side of his forward lines. Loui Eriksson was acquired in the deal with the Stars, and adding Iginla was the next step.
