QUOTING CLIFF ELLIS (On Mississippi State) "We know we are playing the hottest team on our side. They have won six of their last seven games. They are playing extremely well, are a very good team and are well-coached. We know, like all SEC games, it is going to be a battle, and we have to bring our A-game." Auburn-Mississippi State Game Notes -- page 6 (How does Miss. State rebound so well as they lead the SEC?) "They are talented. They know how to go get it and play. (Mario) Austin is a great player. Their perimeter is big and strong. They go and make plays. They do a good job with it." (Do you notice any difference in Mario Austin's game this year from last year?) "He gets better with time. He is just a great player. He is a premier player, not only in our conference, but in the country. He is premier." (On defending Mississippi State) "Mississippi State is a team that has a lot of arsenals. Any time you do anything, it opens up opportunities for others and that is what you have to be concerned about with Mississippi State. Mississippi State is not one-dimensional. You have to be able to defend all aspects of them." He is that good. "I ve talked to a lot of NBA people, and they like him a lot. He is versatile. He is a tough matchup. He is a true small forward at the next level sizewise. I just think he is a great talent. Obviously, this year he is showing it. He had 38 in one game and had 31 at South Carolina and is getting them (Auburn) big baskets when they need him. "They have a difference-maker in Marquis Daniels. He might be as good as anybody in the league." --- Mark Gottfried, Alabama head coach "As advertised, they have an excellent basketball team. They played with championship poise and composure. They have an all-star in Marquis Daniels. We played everybody we had available on him except myself." --- Dave Odom, South Carolina head coach "Marquis Daniels is one of the most underrated players in the country." --- Rece Davis, ESPN "You would be hard-pressed to find a better all-around player in this conference (SEC) than Marquis Daniels. He is just one of the best." --- Larry Conley, ESPN & JP Sports "I believe Marquis Daniels is the most complete Auburn basketball player since Chuck Person. He can play inside or outside. He can go strong to the basket and he can shoot 3-pointers. He can handle the ball, he can pass and he can rebound. In his Auburn career, Daniels has been a force at power forward and a force at point guard. On top of all that, he has stepped forward as a dynamic leade, the man to whom his teammates look on and off the court. The final basket of the game was vintage Daniels. He had the ball on a breakaway and could have dunked it. Instead, he bounced it off the backboard for Marco Killingsworth, who slammed it home to put the exclamation point on Auburn's victory (over #9 Alabama)." --- Phillip Marshall, Huntsville Times

Here is a listing of the nine Cliff Elliscoached players on NBA Opening Day rosters: Jamison Brewer, Indiana Pacers Pat Burke, Orlando Magic Elden Campbell, New Orleans Hornets Dale Davis, Portland Trail Blazers Horace Grant, Orlando Magic Adam Harrington, Dallas Mavericks Mamadou N'diaye, Toronto Raptors Moochie Norris, Houston Rockets Chris Whitney, Denver Nuggets VERY,, VERY IMPRESSIVE Auburn seniors Marquis Daniels and Derrick Bird will be graduating this May in Sociology while Donny Calton will graduate this summer in Communications. Daniels will complete his degree in a remarkable three-and-a-half years. He wasn't able to enroll in Auburn until halfway through his freshman year in January 2000. He was not cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse in time to enroll for the fall quarter in 1999. This trio will make it a total of 21 Tigers to graduate in the nine years Cliff Ellis has been at Auburn. Eighteen of the 21 played for Ellis. EN FUEGO Auburn is shooting an impressive 48 percent from the field this season. The Tigers shot 68 percent from the field against Georgia State, just missing the school record of 71 percent vs. LSU on Feb. 18, 1961. The Tigers, which have finished last in the SEC in field goal percentage two of the last three years, are second in the SEC this season and are ranked 10th nationally. In fact, Marco Killingsworth (.577) and Marquis Daniels (.547) are ranked first and third, respectively, in the SEC in field goal pct. ELLIS ECLIPSES 500-WIN MILESTONE Auburn head coach Cliff Ellis claimed his 500th career Div. I coaching victory in a 100-71 win over Georgia State Nov. 26 to become only the 34th coach to reach the milestone since the NCAA started Div. I play in 1948-49. The 28-year Div. I coaching veteran is currently ranked 16th among active coaches with 515 victories. Ellis is the all-time winningest coach in South Alabama (171-84) and Clemson (177-128) history. He is third on Auburn's list with 167 wins in nine years, trailing only Joel Eaves (213 wins in 14 seasons) and Sonny Smith (173 wins in 11 seasons). DANIELS NAMED "SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK" Senior Marquis Daniels averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in wins over #9 Alabama Jan. 15 and at South Carolina Jan. 18 en route to SEC Player of the Week honors. Daniels scored a SEC-career best 31 points at South Carolina Jan. 15. The Orlando, Fla., native made 3-of-5 threepointers and 10-of-11 free throws against the Gamecocks. During one decisive second-half stretch, he scored eight straight points for Auburn in an 8-3 Tiger run. He had 13 points, five rebounds and five assists against the Crimson Tide, Auburn's seventh-straight home win in the series. Daniels leads Auburn in four statistical categories and is the only player in the SEC to rank in the top 10 in five stat categories (not counting the breakdown between offensive and defensive rebounds). MARQUIS ATTRACTION Senior Marquis Daniels is the Southeastern Conference's "Most Unsung" player. He has led Auburn in scoring each of the last two seasons and is continuing the trend as he is leading the team in four categories: 18.6 points (2nd in SEC), 6.5 rebounds (10th in SEC), 3.4 assists (t-8th in the SEC), 2.5 steals (1st in SEC), shooting 55 percent from the field (3rd on team, but 3rd in SEC) and is pulling down 4.48 defensive rebounds (8th in SEC). Daniels is the only player in the SEC to rank in the top 10 in five different statistical categories (not counting the breakdown between offensive and defensive rebounds). The Orlando, Fla., native averaged 15.7 points as a sophomore and then 11.6 points as a junior where he played four different positions. The All-SEC third-team selection in 2001 just missed the first triple-double in Auburn history with 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists vs. Georgia State and had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists vs. Rutgers. Daniels, who had a career-high 38 points on 16- Auburn-Mississippi State Game Notes -- page 7 of-21 shooting from the field against Troy State to earn San Juan Shootout MVP honors, has three double-doubles this season. Daniels, who scored a SEC-career best 31 points in Auburn's win over South Carolina, was named the SEC's Player of the Week for Jan. 13-19. The senior was named this week's "SEC Good Works Team" Player of the Week Jan. 13-19. Daniels works with Auburn's "Tiger Kids Club" and visits elementary schools in the Auburn-Opelika area to speak on the importance of an education.
