Syllabus for HPER 036 Scuba Diving 1.0 Credit Hour Fall 2001 I. COURSE DESCRIPTION Designed for the student who has little or no scuba diving (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) experience. After successful completion of the NAUI and pool objectives at ORU, each student is eligible to pursue open-water training from the staff of Oral Roberts University. Open water testing is required to receive one's NAUI Scuba Diver Certification. Prerequisites: HPER 001 and HPER 002, or Grad Health Fitness 503, and moderate swimming skills. Lab fee: $50.00 with an additional fee for certification. II. COURSE GOALS The purpose of this course is designed to enable the student to do the following: A. Promote and encourage through purposeful activity the education and training of the ORU student in the safety and techniques of participating in underwater activities. B. Educate people to preserve and protect the quality of God's underwater environment. III. COURSE OBJECTIVES As a result of successfully completing of this course, the student will be able to do the following: A. Explain what to look for in selecting proper scuba equipment. B. Discuss the physical laws related to scuba diving. C. Describe the effect of these physical laws on physiological functions, including diseases of diving and accidents. D. List the safety procedures and rules of diving including emergency lifesaving procedures. E. Demonstrate the correct methods of assembling, disassembling, and care of scuba equipment. F. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES A. University Policies and Procedures 1. Attendance at each class or laboratory is mandatory at Oral Roberts University. 2. Double cuts will be assessed for absences immediately preceding or following holidays. 3. Excessive absences can reduce a student s grade or deny credit for the course. 4. Students taking a late exam because of an unauthorized absence will be charged a late exam fee. 5. Students and faculty at Oral Roberts University adhere to all laws addressing the ethical use of others materials, whether it is in the form of print, video, multimedia, or computer software. 6. Final exams cannot be given before their scheduled times. Students need to check the final exam schedule before planning return flights or other events at the end of the semester. B. Department Policies and Procedures 1. Field Test Policy a. must be taken every semester in each enrolled activities class. b. must be administered by the student s activities class instructor during the scheduled class time. c. automatic failure for cheating on field test or assisting another to cheat. 2. Attendance a. Student is expected to attend and participate in all cheer activities unless administratively excused. Only administrative excuses on the proper form are accepted. Excessive absences can reduce a student s grade or deny credit for the course. Illness and injuries are not considered excused absences. Arriving late to practice causes disruption and demonstrates a lack of respect for the coach and the University. C. Course Policies and Procedures 1. Must have moderate swimming skills 2. Eligible to take NAUI scuba training. A student must be in sound physical condition - especially heart, lungs, and ears. 3. Evaluations a. Health Fitness As measured by Aerobic Points 10% (Aerobic Points due every two weeks) As measured by a 3-mile Field Test 30% As measured by Body Composition 10% b. Equipment Care 10% c. Workbook (Workbooks are due before last test) 5% 2

d Knowledge of the Activity 30% e. Skill of the Activity 5% f. Grading for the courses is as follows: A=90% B=80% C=70% D=60% Less than 60% = F/Failed Course 4.
