Germany - Lake Constance & Rhine Falls Cycle Tour (2017) Individual Self-Guided 8 days/ 7 nights The south-west arm of Lake Constance is known here as the Untersee, or Lower Lake Constance. Many locals consider it to be the most beautiful part of Lake Constance - not without reason: You cycle past timber-frame houses in medieval villages along the Swiss and German banks of the Rhine, always with the volcanic hills of the Hegau in sight, to arrive at Europe's biggest water fall, the Rhine Falls. Hermann Hesse and Otto Dix were so fascinated by this countryside that they settled here for many years. Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen You start the tour in Constance, the largest city around the lake. Day 2: Constance - Radolfzell Überlingen 50 km On your way to Überlingen you pass through the old imperial city Radolfzell and then cycle across the Bodanrück. Day 3: Überlingen Kressbronn 50 km Today you cycle to Friedrichshafen via Meersburg with its old Castle. From Friedrichshafen through orchards to Kressbronn. Commons.wikimedia.org Day 4: Kressbronn - Höchst/Rorschach 35/50 km The first highlight is the Bavarian city Lindau visit the city center on the island. Soon after you reach the Austrian border and Bregenz, where you should visit the lake stage. Your destination for the day is Höchst in Austria or Rorschach in Switzerland. Day 5: Höchst/Rorschach - Constance/Kreuzlingen 35-55 km You cycle through the Canton of Thurgau with its huge apple orchards. The route takes you through small villages back to Constance. Day 6: Constance - Schaffhausen 50 km Through picturesque Swiss fihing villages along the South shore of the Untersee via Stein am Rhein to Schaffhausen. Day 7: Schaffhausen - Rhine Falls - Constance/Kreuzlingen 55 km + boat trip Today you cycle to the Rhine Falls, the largest European waterfalls. On the other side of the Rhine back to Stein am Rhein and along the Höri to Gaienhofen and by boat to Reichenau Island. From there back to Constance. Day 8: Individual departure or extension of stay
Route Technical Characteristics: Route Profile: Easy. On day 7 slightly hilly but otherwise level, mostly on dedicated paved cycle paths close to the lake. The path sometimes follows brief sections that are unpaved; around Friedrichshafen the cycle path is alongside the main road. The banks of the lake are widely accessible to the public. Suitable for families.
