Private Andrew Chisholm Inglis McBain Andrew Chisholm Inglis McBain was born on 30 November 1891 1 in Selkirk in the Borders, the home town of his mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth s husband and Andrew s father was Alexander, a gardener from Ayton, which is just north of Berwick. The couple had four children whilst living in Selkirk, of which Andrew was the youngest. 2,3,4 The family then moved to Newington in Edinburgh, where they had a further five children. In 1911, the family were living at 50 Bedford Road in Old Machar in Aberdeen, where Andrew worked as a grocer s assistant. At this time, his father was a professional cricketer and groundsman for Aberdeen University. 50 Bedford Road, Aberdeen 5

Andrew appears to have joined the 4/5 th (Dundee and Angus) Battalion of the Black Watch 6 before being transferred into the 1/7 th (Fife) Battalion, which was serving in the line on the Ypres salient at the time of his death on 19 th September 1917 7. This was during the Battle of Passchendaele (the Third Battle of Ypres) which lasted from July to November 1917. The day of his death was the day immediately preceding an offensive by the 154 th Brigade to begin of the Battle of the Menin Road Ridge. 8 The build up of troops in preparation for the offensive attracted considerable artillery fire from both sides. The Germans put down a barrage each morning at dawn in the hope of catching assembling troops 9. Major General Wauchope noted As a rule this barrage fell behind the front line of posts and caused but few casualties. 10 The Battalion War Diary records that on 19 th September, 8 men from the Battalion were killed and a further 14 wounded but no further detail is provided. 11 This reflects the apparent commonplace nature of such numbers of casualties from shellfire at this time. The Menin Road, Ypres, 14 September 1917 12

Map of the Battle of Passchendaele 13 Although Andrew McBain s name appears on the Meigle War Memorial, the connection between him and the village is not clear. At the time of his death, his parents were living at The Craig at Alyth which places them in the locality but not with the village itself. One possibility is that the link may be from his father s profession as a cricketer and groundsman, as Meigle Cricket Club has maintained a high profile in the village since it was established in 1876.

Andrew McBain is buried in Cement House Cemetery at Langemark- Poelkapelle, though records suggest that that his body would have been transferred from one of a number of small cemeteries in the area within a few years of the Armistice being signed.
