USING THE DAN EMERGENCY HOTLINE +1-919-684-8111 OR +1-919-684-4DAN (COLLECT) WHEN YOU CALL THE DAN EMERGENCY HOTLINE The numbers +1-919-684-8111 and +1-919-684-4DAN (-4326) are answered at the switchboard of Duke University Medical Center. Tell the operator you have a diving emergency. The operator will either connect you directly with DAN or have someone call you back at the earliest possible moment. DAN's medical staff may make an immediate recommendation or call you back after making arrangements with a local physician or the DAN Regional Coordinator. DAN Regional Coordinators are familiar with chamber facilities in their area, and because they're qualified in diving medicine, they can make recommendations about treatment. DAN's medical staff or Regional Coordinator may ask you to wait by the phone while they make arrangements. These plans may take 30 minutes or longer, as several phone calls may be required. This delay should not place the diver in any greater danger. However, if the situation is lifethreatening, arrange to transport the diver immediately to the nearest local medical facility for immediate stabilization and assessment of his or her condition. Call DAN TravelAssist at 1-800-326-3822 at this time for consultation with the local medical provider.0

GENERAL PROCEDURES Depending on the nature of the SCUBA diving accident, stabilize the patient, administer 100% oxygen, and contact local Emergency Medical System (EMS) for transport to medical facility. Explain the circumstances of the SCUBA diving incident to the evacuation teams, medics and physicians (see script for general guidelines). Stress this is a SCUBA diving accident, not just a diving accident. Do not assume that they understand why 100% oxygen may be required for the diving accident victim or that recompression treatment may be necessary. 1. Make appropriate contact with victim or rescue as required, followed by victim assessment. 2. Establish (A)irway, (B)reathing, (C)irculation as required. 3. Use Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) if needed and available 4. Treat for spinal injuries, stop bleeding, and treat for shock as required. 5. Administer 100% oxygen. 6. Notify EMS to transport victim to nearest medical treatment facility. 7. Notify emergency contact as indicated on victims entry form (In Office) 8. Call appropriate diving physician and recompression chamber. 9. Secure diving victim s scuba equipment. 10. Complete and submit Accident Report as required by EMS services.
