PAGE 4 BCSC PARTNERS, Continued Western Bowling Proprietors Insurance Larry Linder 1535 E. Shaw Street, Suite 100 Fresno, CA 93710 800-200-9998 Fax 559-227-4461 Western Pacific Bowling Supply Chuck Sager / Lee Haxton 1216 W. Grove Avenue Orange, CA 92865 714-974-1733 chuck@wpbowling.com President s Perspective With winter season now underway and schools in full session, most centers should again be seeing leagues during the week and busy weekends of open play. The school sessions today are much different than they used to be. There are schools doing year-round, there are schools doing quarter systems, and there are still some doing what we call the traditional school year. Because of this unusual schedule, it is vital to contact your school districts about their schedules so that you can prepare for their off days and holidays. Speaking of holidays, Halloween is coming up rather soon, and this year it falls on a Saturday night. Sounds like a great night for spooky cosmic music in your center and costumes worn for the evening while bowling. Prizes could be offered for age groups with their costumes, and candy for the kids. All right, candy for the adults, too. While we are on the subject of Halloween, my good friend Danny Mueller at Buena Lanes tried an idea with his league bowlers that turned out great. Danny offered free-game coupons to his league bowlers to give out as trick-or-treat gifts for kids. What a great way to reach kids about bowling in our neighborhoods, and the cost is a little bit of printing. We are doing the program this season, and I encourage everyone to think about it. One free game usually returns about $8 per person. I hope everyone is attacking the jersey programs at their centers. With baseball gearing toward the playoffs, pro football rolling along, and basketball in training, now is the time to use these fine sports sell bowling. Everyone loves some type of team, and the products we are offering are not only authentic, but priced so that no one can compete with us! I believe this program is about the best find we have ever had. Tom Cristi, President Bowling Centers of Southern California BCSC NEWSLETTER

VOLUME 13, ISSUE 10 PAGE 5 Tahoe-Bound This year s West Coast Bowling Convention was held October 5-6 in South Lake Tahoe, NV. The move brought the WCBC back to its roots, where the show originally began 18 years ago. Ever since 1994, when it was last held in Tahoe, the show had been held in Reno. It wasn t the largest West Coast show ever. The attendance from the BCSC was pretty much comprised of mostly BCSC Board members and a few guests. It was a little disheartening even if understandable in this economic climate. I m curious to learn why more of us couldn t attend. Poor marketing, promotion? Bad time of year, location? Maybe it s a simple matter of no budget. Whatever the reason, I d really like to hear back from you so we can best decide how to garner participation in the future. A few highlights to report: The Keynote speaker, Howard Behar, was positively inspirational. Behar is former President of Starbucks International and wrote a book titled, It s Not About the Coffee. His keynote address and book are about leadership principals from his life at Starbucks and is filled with practical principals that ANY bowling center would be well served to follow. Buy the paperback online for a pittance and you ll be rewarded with a better perspective on life and business. How much is that worth? At BCSC s Annual Membership Meeting, I was honored to provide the BCSC Annual Awards for: Friend of the Year, Person of the Year and the Executive Director Award. You ve got to read the rest of this great newsletter to learn who won what. There were plenty of venders showing off their products and best of all, there was a great sense of camaraderie. In these times, there s little more comforting (except, maybe mama s chicken soup or tomato sauce) than being able to speak and interact with men and women who share the same problems and concerns that you have. There s no accountant, lawyer, banker, therapist or clergy who quite gets what it s really like to be a bowling center proprietor or manager like another. Over the next few months, the BCSC is going to schedule a few general membership meetings and activities. We ll set aside time to talk about BCSC business and what s happening at centers around So. CA. We ll also pack in plenty of fun too. We ll be calling, e-mailing, snail-mailing and faxing to try and personally invite every one of you to these events. It would do us all a world of good if you carve out some time to participate. All the best in what, I hope, will prove to be a profitable fall. Scott Frager, Executive Director Bowling Centers of Southern California P.S. I would be remiss if I didn t, once again, thank Gary Forman and Fountain Bowl for bringing this newsletter to our membership in full-living color and in proper newsletter format!

VOLUME 13, ISSUE 10 PAGE 7 Center Spotlight: Sea and Air Lanes North Island, Bldg. 772, San Diego, CA 92135 General Manager: Gerry Sagen, 24 lanes How long have you been in the bowling business? Since 1992. I started at Brunswick Cal Oaks. Then went over to Brunswick Chula Vista, Brunswick Premier, then to Parkway Bowl for seven years. How did you get into the bowling business? There was an opening by Brunswick in Murrieta for a part-time position. What advice would you give someone who is new and starting a bowling center? Learn as much as you can and bowl. Describe your market area. Navy friends and families. What are some of the biggest challenges for your center? Getting people to bowl when ships go out. What is your most profitable area? The bar. What is the biggest benefit/advantage of belonging to the BCSC? We like the attention we get. What s the next major project you re planning for the center? New scoring system with QubicaAMF. Do you have a quote to live by? My dad always used to say, There s always something to do! If you could change one thing about bowling, what would it be? To change the game up to make it more interesting. Annual Membership Renewals We at the BCSC office work hard to bring you the best practices and programs for your centers to take advantage of. Programs like the Pepsi, insurance, sports clubs, jerseys, cruise leagues and Dippin Dots not only provides members with great rebates and discounts, it also provides great value you can t quite put a dollar value on, like our networking events. This past year, BCSC sent a survey out to all its members asking them about the value of membership. We received some interesting results. When we asked our centers to describe the overall value of membership to our association, 40% said there was over $5,000 of value (See chart on right). When we asked centers to put a value on the programs they used at their center, the top 5 programs centers chose were BPAA music licensing, Pepsi, sports clubs, property and liability insurance and workers compensation insurance. If you are not taking advantage of these programs, we encourage you to give us a call to get the info. Member response to annual value of BCSC Membership 40% said $5,001+ 41% said $1,500 - $5,000 19% said up to $1,500 The year s almost coming to an end and we will be sending out the invoices to renew your membership for 2010. We kindly ask that you join early before Dec. 31, 2009 as you will receive a discount of $2 per lane for doing so. We sincerely thank you for your continued participation and support.
