SUMMER CAMP NEWSLETTER JUNE 16-23, 2013 Week three of the Evert Tennis Academy Summer Camp provided a great week of weather, tennis and fun with friends. From the heat and intensity on the tennis court to the smiles and laughter off the court, ETA campers enjoyed an allaround camp experience. Students focused on various areas of technique, as well as competition during this week. They also worked extremely hard in fitness and with the overlying theme of focus in the mental conditioning program. We truly hope each and every camper enjoyed this week as much as the staff of ETA! We would love to continue working with you during this summer, however if you are headed home, please take advantage of the helpful tips in this newsletter and continue using all your new techniques and strategies back home! If you have any questions or comments about your camp experience, please do not hesitate to contact us! A note from Dr. Vernice Richards: This coming week we will be working on CONFIDENCE. A part of this process will include having the campers understand that confidence exists on the inside. And that what goes on on the inside can make the difference in a point, game, set and match. In order to represent this, we will be having a Tacky Tuesday and Wacky Wednesday this week; campers will be allowed to dress Tacky/Wacky for the day as we work on building their Tennis and Personal confidence to match the flamboyance of the outfit they chose. I would really like your help with hammering home this point. -Vernice Click the Logo to visit our website, Like our Facebook page and Follow us on Twitter! Page 1

TIPS OF THE WEEK Coaching Tip 1: The key in becoming a better player is to be relaxed, not worry about the score and most importantly have fun! -Coach Hana Tomljanovic Coaching Tip 2: When hitting volleys always have your arms up with AIRY pits! (air going under) -Coach Adrienne Burger Strength & Conditioning Coach JohnMark Jenkins You only get out of it, what you put into it. Mental Development Coach Vernice Richards Your attitude is your best weapon. It s about how you approach the game and what it gives you. Page 2 EVERT TENNIS ACADEMY SUMMER CAMP NEWSLETTER

Evert Summer Campers Q & A s Emily Hollywood, FL Q: How would you describe yourself as a player? A: I like to stay on the baseline, and rally the point out. Q: Who is your favorite player? A: I like Rafael Nadal because he has a good attitude and is agressive with his shots. Q: What was your highlight of the week? A: Playing doubles with Alejandra Martinez. I love competing. It s fun!! Mariella & Jojo New Jersey Q: Why do you like playing doubles with each other? M: We understamd each other on the court. Our levels are fairly equal. J: Our strengths and weaknesses balance each other out. Q: How do matches help you in becoming a better player? M: You can apply what you learned in practice in a realistic situation. J: We get to see how we play in a game situation. Personally it gives me a chance to learn from my opponents. Q: What did you plan to improve before you came to camp? M:My serve. I felt like it wasn t strong enough. After attending the camp, I m more confident in it. J: My backhand. Each lesson was affective because of the coach s tips and teaching style. JM Baltimore, MD Q: How has your game improved in the last few weeks? A: It s improved a lot. I ve gotten better at hitting second serves and anticipating shots. Q: Who do you think will win Wimbledon? A: Roger Federer because he s very consistant on grass. Page 3 Q: How has your fitness improved since you have been here? A: I ve gotten faster and have been able to get to the shots easier. EVERT TENNIS ACADEMY SUMMER CAMP NEWSLETTER

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Outside of tennis, the ETA Summer Campers get an opportunity to take a break from the courts and go on activities around South Florida! Here are some snapshots from this week! Page 6

Wimbledon 2013 The championshps start this weekend and we asked the summer campers and three staff members who they think will be holding up the trophy at the end! halfway around the world intern danielle / work placement from feb - jul sports management student from the netherlands / How was the transition from the Netherlands to the USA? In one word: Exciting. Unlike most ETA students I had never flown by myself, let alone halfway around the world. Luckily the Academy was very accommodating and all the people here gave me a warm welcome. What was your most memorable moment here so far? It is hard to choose, because there were so many! What really got me were the bittersweet goodbyes of the full-timers. Even though a lot of them are returning, they were all in tears. When I just got here I was told most interns cry as they leave too. I did not understand it then, but I do now. I have had a great time here and will be really sad to go. Do you feel that the Evert Tennis Academy offers an internationally friendly environment? It definitely does. Both students and staff come from all over the world. The fact that everybody is away from home seems to bond us all. It gets even more interesting when they start sharing their favorite foods from home. I really loved all the new experiences. From your perspective, do you feel like the students are having a good time at Evert? Between the Tennis and the nightly activities I believe most have a blast. I saw two students playing a coach this week. Despite being tired, the kids were still playing just for fun. That says it all to me. What are you going to do once you leave Evert Tennis Academy? Over the summer I will be travelling the states. After that it is back to school and hopefully graduate in 2014. For my final thesis I would like to get a work placement at Nike. My experience here might help me achieve that goal. Page 8 What will you miss the most when you leave? The people. The level of Tennis was also very impressive and I am very happy I got the opportunity to come here. Thanks Evert!
