President s Message Over this summer our new Members of the Executive have been engaged in learning their roles and responsibilities. I am impressed with their diligence and want to be sure you get to know them and thank them for their huge contributions to the functioning of our Club for the benefit of all. The new Members to the Executive include: Public Relations Gordon Hollis Secretary Maggie Kirchen Social Events Joan Stirling and Barb Fowler Tour Coordinators Donna Vine and JoAnn Grand Vice President Doug Knight I trust you are all enjoying the last of what our short summer has to offer. Biking and Golfing are in full swing, the summer BBQ was well attended, and I am told the bikers really did have a good time at Canmore in spite of the floods. As Mike Tansey related his experiences on that trip to me I was reminded of an article I read recently authored by Maureen Weir the President of an Irish Methodist College. The full article spoke of using diamond dust to polish diamonds letting the inner brilliance of the diamonds shine through. I am sharing it with you all because I believe it speaks to the core of our Club s essence and of how each member seems to manage their individual circumstances synergistically creating the RMSSC. To me it is one of the main reasons our Club has a healthy and growing membership. It is a good place to be. Quote;..Life is a refining process. Our response to it determines whether we will be ground down or polished up. On a piano, one person sits down and plays sonatas, while another merely bangs away at chopsticks. The piano is not responsible. It is how you touch the keys and which ones you touch, that makes the difference. It is how you play what life gives you that determines your joy and how you shine. Life sometimes makes you feel you re being tumbled in a cement mixer rather than a diamond polisher but how you respond will bring either inner qualities to light or leave a dull finish. end quote. As your President I have had the opportunity to visit and work with members injured, some seriously, and to meet many people dealing with everyday issues in a senior s life. In every instance I have seen the inner brilliance of the diamond shine through. So, let s all take a lesson and all participate fully in the Clubs many activities; let s all choose to make the 2013/14 season the best ever, and shine like diamonds. Membership Report Submitted by Anke Seifried Registration and Information Session Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 3 7 pm at Snow Valley We currently have 480 members in the Club, all of whose memberships are up for renewal for the coming 2013-2014 ski season. Traditionally, Members have come to the Registration and Information Session in the Fall to complete their paperwork and to find out about the coming ski season. A rather enjoyable and generally efficient way to join or renew a membership is to print out the membership application form available in this Newsletter or at http:// seniorsski.com/contacts/ fill it in and mail it to the address on the form well before the October 23 Registration. This ensures that the prospective Member can simply come to the October 23 Registration to pick up a membership card, name button, information about the planned ski trips and visit with other Members. If there is a chance that your usual roommate is not available for a trip, please take advantage of the website under Recent Posts Tour Roommate Matching. It really worked well last season and we hope to see a repeat performance this coming season. It is your responsibility to make arrangements and we count on you designating roommates before registering for trips. We are also making it your responsibility to arrange for car pooling because of insurance issues. Do not count on Tour Hosts to find a roommate or a ride for you. We would like to emphasize that it is never wrong to let fellow Members know what you need and that is why there is a Bulletin Board section on our website http://seniorsski.com/messages/ Use this section to ask for or offer a ride. We do want the skisingles to have a safe and enjoyable time skiing and we have found that some initiative on their part goes a long way in assuring this. On October 23, you need to bring your cheque book to purchase your Club Membership or Fall Dinner tickets; and your Credit Card, if you want to purchase a Snow Valley Season's Pass,. They are still $65. The Club Membership fee for 2013 2014 is unchanged at $25 ($20 for those 80 or older as of December 31, 2013) cash or cheque please, NO credit or debit cards. The Club policy to waive the fee for those Members 80 or older ( Super Seniors ) who have been members continuously for the previous five years is also in effect for this coming year. I have mailed by Canada Post a Memo and a personalized Super Seniors Membership Application Form to each eligible Member. We will need a sizable number of volunteer Members to help with welcoming new and returning Members, tracking the membership card pick-up, handling walk-in Membership forms/cheques, providing information on how the Club works and suggestions on the best way to get the most enjoyment out of our winters. If you cannot pick up your membership card at the October 23 session, please pick it up at the Fall Dinner in November or it will be mailed to you after that date. The Club respects the confidentiality of all the information the Club collects. The contact information of Members is shared in the following manner: 1. The contact information of address, phone number and email address is shared with the Executive, Historian and Activities Coordinators for the purpose of communicating with Members. 2. For participants of each ski tour, Tour Hosts prepare and distribute a rooming list of participants with their addresses and phone numbers. 3. A Members Phone List, available after December 1, has the names and phone numbers of members who have registered by that date and given consent on the Application for Membership Form for their names and phone numbers to be shared. This information is confidential and for personal use only. 4. As usual, we will close accepting Membership Applications at the end of the ski season; Membership applications will be considered for the 2013-2014 Membership year if they are received no later than March 31, 2014. The Members Handbook is online under About us and ready to be downloaded/printed or searched for answers to questions you may have, for example: Who can be a Member/participate in Club activities? You have to be at least 55 as of December 31, 2013 to be eligible for Membership for the 2013-2014 season. Partners under 55 who are skiers may accompany their spouse or significant other on Club Tours. Non-Skiing partners of any age, who are not Members, may accompany their Member Partner, if there is room on the bus. All Members and their guests may participate in Club Social events. Only Members under 80 years old are covered by the Club s accident insurance. (Please consult the fine print in the Members Handbook). Please mark your calendar for October 23 and enjoy your complimentary afternoon coffee and goodie at Snow Valley with us!! PAGE 3

Don't go into this ski season with "summer legs"! Get in ski shape and have fun with your friends in the Club. Contact Shirley Powell and/or Doug Knight at activities@seniorsski.com! PAGE 4

Summer Activities by Shirley Powell and Doug Knight The biking has been very successful this year. Thanks to our coordinators: Lois Swane, Arnie Stone, Lynn Skillen, Art Mathison and Mike Tansey. There were one or two leaders for the Greens, 3-4 leaders for the Blues and one or two for the Black group to accommodate a turnout of approximately 90 bikers each Tuesday and Thursday. And thanks to over 50 trip leaders for stepping up and taking part! Thanks to Harold Knopke for the Bike Again course which ran the first two weeks of biking in May. The Canmore (Rainmaker?) Bicycle Tour ran from June 17-20, 2013. Thanks to Barb Fowler and Joan Stirling for organizing accommodations at the Mystic Springs. Over forty members of our club cycled for two days in the Kananaskis and Goat Creek areas. And then the heavy rains came down causing major destruction in the Canmore area. With the flooding and debris on the highway most of the cyclists were unable to come home until Sunday. Three Special Rides An Elk Island National Park ride was held August 9, 2013 - once again cheerfully organized by Robbie Steen. Fifty cyclists enjoyed a great day of biking followed by a picnic. There was some confusion when a very large buffalo appeared on the highway!! PAGE 5

Summer Activities (continued) On July 24, 2013, Celeste and John Zurbrigg hosted a NE Millwoods Ride. Thirty cyclists turned out for a great tour followed by a visit to Montana s for food and drinks. Gerry Woolnough organized a Spruce Grove ride for 23 riders on August 14. Our last official day of biking will be October 1, 2013. A lunch for all bikers and their significant others will be held following the ride at Snow Valley Lodge. The Golf Tournament will take place September 18, 2013. Our thanks to Art Switner for coordinating this event. The last day for golfing this season will be September 16, 2013 at Pioneer Meadows. Thanks to Karol Muir for organizing the golf dates.! PAGE 6

RMSSC Golfer s Picnic Submitted by Bob Larson About 30 golfers in the RMSSC golf group played JR s Golf Course on Monday, August 12, then journeyed to Sandy Beach for a group picnic. The group was graciously hosted by Donna Ducommun at her cabin and a great time was had by all. Prizes were given for hidden scores on each of the nine holes played. Ties were broken by a draw. Delicious burgers made by Donna were cooked up by chefs Klaus Kyritz, and Lew Kubbernus with Mike Tansey providing relief for them. Other members of the group brought complementary dishes providing a great meal for everyone. Mike Tansey thanked Donna for hosting a wonderful and casual event. Donna indicated she would be happy to host again next year if her cabin isn t sold. During our departure, we hope someone hid the realty sign because this was a really great day. From all the golfers, another big thank you to Donna. Photo provided by Doug Dowell! PAGE 7
