TURKEY VALLEY GIRLS Make State Run Publication of: Calmar Courier Community News. Community Service. WAY-TO-GO TV GIRLS!

2 Turkey Valley Girls Basketball TV Girls Return Strength 5 Players Lost With Graduation, Top 4 Scorers Back Turkey Valley girls will have their work cut out for them if they want to top last year s stellar performance. Runner-up honors at state made last year a season to remember. A number of players return for this year, making for what might well be a formidable presence. Co-head coaches Carla Nymeyer and Dan Stepan are returning this year, aided by Justin Bakula. With a conference record last year of 15-0 and a regular season record of 21-0, the Lady Trojans were a force to reckon with last season. The girls lost five players to graduation including Kayla Schaufenbuel, Taylor Kuennen, Delaney Lensing, Stephanie Martin and Macie Njus. Yet, the team s top four scorers return from last season. Returning letter winners include seniors Sloan Huinker, Kayla Gebel, Shelby Reicks, Morgen Kuennen and Sadie Nymeyer and junior Emily Busta. Having a strong group of veterans back will mean the team has a firm foundation on which to build. This has coaching staff anticipating that Turkey Valley might once again be number one in the small division for the conference, though Kee bears watching. Turkey Valley s varsity girls program includes (front row, l-r): Coach Justin Bakula, Coach Carla Nymeyer, Sadie Nymeyer, Abbey Ott, Shelby Reicks, Morgen Kuennen, Kayla Gebel, Sloan Huinker and Coach Dan Stepan; back row: Kassidy Reicks, Kaci Rausch, Elli Winter, Emily Busta and Lydia Schuchhardt. Turkey Valley Girls Basketball 3 TV Girls Going Strong Lady Trojans 5-0 The Lady Stars saw anything but a heavenly night as the Lady Trojans took home their fourth win of a stellar season. The girls played really good defense against a team that likes to drive to the basket, said Coach Dan Stepan. We had very balanced scoring among our team. Turkey Valley scored a 66-19 victory over Starmont. Thursday s contest with MFL MarMac saw the Lady Trojans win 56-42 over the Lady Bulldogs. We found a way to win when not playing our best, said Stepan. [That team] does a lot of nice things. In the latest state rankings, the Lady Trojans were ranked second in the state for Class 1A for a second week in a row. Saturday night s contest against New Hampton was not played due to the storm. Turkey Valley was scheduled to host Kee Tuesday. Turkey Valley Girls Open Season With A Bang Turkey Valley girls are wasting no time this season in getting their name out as a force with which to reckon. A 50-point win in their season opener saw West Central go down in defeat against a formidable opponent in the form of the Lady Trojans. Turkey Valley Coach Dan Stepan called it a good effort for the first night out as he looked back on the successful beginning of a new season. Still, while Turkey Valley was victorious, coaching staff and players won t be resting on their laurels. We have a lot to work on as the season goes on, said Stepan. We got a lot of shots up which is one of our goals. Leading the Lady Trojans in scoring, senior Sadie Nymeyer had 31 points for the night, single-handedly equaling the entire total for West Central. Also making it in to double-digit territory for Turkey Valley were Morgen Kuennen with 18 and Shelby Reicks with 10. Dec. 2 TV 57, Central 38 The Lady Trojans were victorious in their second outing of the season with a win against Central. We played well in the 1st half and tried to work on a few different things in the 2nd half, said Stepan. It was good to get all the girls in the game. Dec. 3 TV 49, Decorah 19 The Lady Trojans finished play last week with a win Saturday at Decorah. Our girls played extremely hard this evening, said Stepan. We didn t shoot extremely well, but made up for it on the defensive end. It was a good first week of the season. 4 Turkey Valley Girls Basketball Turkey Valley Girls Undefeated Now at 7-0, Still Ranked #2 Lady Trojans Defeat Lady Warriors Turkey Valley girls found themselves in an unfamiliar situation this season as they struggled to establish a lead early in their contest with South Winneshiek. Once they found that lead, nearly halfway through the second quarter, they found their groove, going on to a 55-22 win. On their homecourt Thursday, the Lady Trojans saw the Lady Warriors score first and then hold Turkey Valley off from getting on top for most of the game s first half. It was an impressive performance for South Winneshiek as they battled well against the state-ranked Lady Trojans, again number two in the state for Class 1A in the Bravo on your road to success! Novak Insurance Agency 101 Church St, Spillville (563) 562-4800 latest rankings. Coming off a loss Monday to Spring Grove, the Lady Warriors showed fire in their battle Thursday. Finding their footing, though, the Lady Trojans managed to emerge on top by the half and took control in the second half of the game. Turkey Valley was up 16-12 by the half and scored 39 points in the second half while South Winneshiek had 10 points in the second half. Shelby Reicks led her team in scoring with 18 points, and Kayla Gebel also broke double-digit territory for Turkey Valley with 14 points. s note: Final stats for both teams not posted by the early Christmas deadline LEFT: Taylor Buchheit works to make the shot while guarded by Elli Winter and Morgen Kuennen. The girls played real well versus a quality opponent, said Coach Dan Stepan. They were focused and we saw many positives from all the girls. Shelby Reicks dominated scoring with 20 points, with Kayla Gebel managing 13 points and Sadie Nymeyer and Morgen Kuennen both seeing double-digit territory with 11 points each. Thursday night saw the Lady Trojans continue their winning streak with a 58-36 victory over Tripoli.
