The Spinlock Lifejacket Harness Range 2010 info@spinlock.co.uk This document outlines the key differences between the three versions of the Deckvest and the target user for each model. Since its launch in 2007 the Deckvest has quickly become the personal lifejacket of choice for performance sailors and has already encouraged many more sailors to wear a reliable lifejacket harness at sea. Deckvests are now being worn by every kind of user from Volvo Ocean Race crews to husband and wife sailors, and from commercial marine professionals to special forces and RIB racers. In every case, Deckvest s special combination of fit, ergonomics and quality of protection has been the key to its success. Why it s so easy to choose the right size. The Deckvest Size 2 is overwhelmingly our most popular size, the one chosen by 80% of customers worldwide. The other 20% either buy our (extra large) Size 3 or (small) Size 1. Size 1 = 5% Size 2 = 80% Size 3 = 15% Like any lifejacket, the Deckvest must be adjusted to be close fitting so it will lift the body securely when inflated. 5% 80% 15%
Deckvest 150N with Pro Sensor (water activated) Inflation The standard Deckvest, the preferred option for most sailing applications. Includes: Deck safety harness, Light, Sprayhood, Legstraps. Automatic Inflation. Uses 33g CO2 Cylinder 150N, the rating recommended for inshore & offshore sailing. Very light, comfortable design for use over long periods. Compact and unobtrusive. Target Customers All leisure and performance sailors. UML Pro Sensor Inflator Water sensitive activation system (Hygroscopic). Uses a compressed paper capsule that dissolves in 5 seconds and releases a spring to puncture the gas cylinder. Indicators on the head show if unit is armed. Cap is designed so that only water flowing upwards through the unit will cause it to activate. Water, spray, rain running down the jacket will not cause activation. Uses 33g CO2 Cylinder. Benefits Very reliable. Easy to check and maintain, all components are visible on the outside of the inflatable bladder. Rearming is very simple, and easy to carry out at sea. Rearming kits inexpensive and stocked by most marine stores (Useful in case of airline baggage restrictions on pressure cylinders). Easy to convert to manual only firing if required. Pro Sensor Considerations Can be prone to accidental inflation in heavy breaking sea conditions or if stored in a damp, unventilated location. Cylinder can work loose over time so needs checking regularly. Cylinder can corrode/leak if stored damp. 3 Year replacement date printed on firing cap. Approvals CE approved ISO 12402-3 - Lifejacket ISO 12401 - Deck Harness
Deckvest 150N with Ha mm (pressure activated) Inflation The alternative for the performance sailor and some professionals. Includes: Deck safety harness, Light, Sprayhood, Legstraps. Automatic hydrostatic inflation. 150N is Standard for inshore & offshore sailing. Very light and comfortable design for use over long periods. Compact and unobtrusive. Target customers Performance/Pro sailors those sailing often in very adverse conditions. Hammar MA10 Hydrostatic Inflation System The Hammar system works on water pressure, and will not inflate until the cap is approximately 10cm underwater. A valve allows water into the firing head when water pressure exceeds a given spring pressure. This dissolves a compound that then releases a spring to fire the cylinder. Uses 33g CO2 bottle. Need to use a Spinlock rearming kit as the manual handle is sewn to the head. Benefits Will not accidently inflate. May be preferred for very wet conditions, bow work, rib driving etc. Cylinder is glued into the head so will not work loose. Cylinder is contained inside the bladder so will not be affected by salt and corrosion. Single indicator clearly shows if unit is armed. 5 year expiry date on activation cap. Hammar Considerations Compared to Pro Sensor: More expensive rearming kit, (more than double the cost). Harder to find in marine stores. More difficult to rearm and repack. For reliable water access at 10cm depth, all air must be removed from the bladder. Air trapped either in the bladder during rearming or in the cover around the firing head can delay or in very extreme cases prevent the head from activating. Delayed inflation can also be caused if full immersion of the firing head is delayed by buoyant foul weather gear. Approvals CE approved ISO 12402-3 - Lifejacket ISO 12401 - Deck Harness
Deckvest 275N with Hamma r (pressure activated) Inflation Increased inflation for commercial and extreme conditions. Includes: Decksafety harness, Light, Sprayhood, Legstraps. Mesh pocket and low profile attachment point. Automatic hydrostatic inflation. Uses 60g CO2. Only available in sizes 2 and 3. Unusually compact 275N lifejacket including sprayhood. Superior fit even more relevant for increase of weight. Target customers Commercial/Marine Professionals who may be carrying extra weight, i.e. tools, weapons, protective equipment etc. Performance sailors sailing in very extreme conditions where extra clothing layers may be worn, or where survival suits might be used. Current users include Specialist Police, MOD, Offshore wind turbine operators, harbour pilots, costal rescue services, commercial diving operators. Leisure sailors are also purchasing the 275N because of recent evidence of how the extra buoyancy can improve lifejacket performance when wearing full foul weather gear. See benefits. Hammar MA10 Hydrostatic Inflation System Uses a 60g Co2 bottle. Benefits The extra buoyancy of the 275N has several benefits: It turns over a face-down body more quickly, especially if wearing full wet weather gear and boots or an immersion suit It also holds the user s head some 5cm higher out the water. It supports the extra weight of tools or equipment. Will not accidently inflate, so is more suitable for very wet conditions, bow work, rib driving etc. Cylinder is glued into the firing head so will not work loose. Cylinder is contained inside the bladder so will not be affected by salt and corrosion. Single indicator clearly shows if unit is armed. 5 year expiry date on activation cap. Considerations Slightly heavier and bulkier than either of the two 150N versions. Swimming and boarding a ladder or a liferaft, is more difficult. 60g Rearming kit more expensive and harder to find. More difficult to rearm and repack (for reliable water access at 10cm depth, all air must be removed from the bladder. Air trapped either in the bladder during rearming or in the cover around the firing head can delay or in very extreme cases prevent the head from activating. Delayed inflation can also be caused if full immersion of the firing head is delayed by buoyant foul weather gear. Approvals CE approved ISO 12402-2 - Lifejacket ISO 12401 - Deck Harness COMPLIANCE The size and bulk of SOLAS certified abandonment lifejackets systems make them unsuitable for everyday wear. In many cases, the more practical option may be to wear the ISO Deckvest 150N or 275N lifejacket for greater comfort, fit and ease of adjustment. SOLAS specification abandonment jackets should also be carried aboard to comply with regulations.
Every Deckvest Needs a Deckware Safety Line The Deckvest is part of a MOB prevention system. We strongly encourage every new Deckvest owner to buy their own Deckware safety line, for their own safety and the safety of their fellow crew and to wear it as essential protection against falling overboard. DW-STR/3L DW-SFL/03 There are no circumstances when you are better off in the water than out of it... Essentials of Sea Survival, F. Golden & M.Tipton 2002 The lifejacket is part of a system and should be seen as the last resort for users. We should always actively encourage users to get into the habit of owning and using their own safety line for their and the rest of the crews safety. 10 Best Ways to Prevent Man Overboard 1 2 3 4 5 Tighten lifelines and jacklines. These lines are essential for containing a fall safely. Keep them taut, replace any damaged or corroded terminations; specify a low stretch jackline. Add strong points and handholds. Vital at workstations, and for moving and clipping inboard of the jackline and especially on bigger, wider decks. Good foothold. Wear footwear that grips well on a heeled deck when wet. Fit nonskid deck patches where necessary. Wear a combined harness and lifejacket. Wearing a lifejacket on its own won t keep you out of the water-only a clipped-on harness will. Wear the combination. Be ready to clip on. Always be ready to clip on, when sailing short handed,at night,in poor visibility or in heavier weather. Novices, children and the less able should clip on in all weathers. 6 7 8 9 10 Clip on out of consideration for the skipper, fellow crew and those who might have to come to your rescue. Make sure it fits. If your lifejacket harness is unfastened or flapping around your waist it can t be a reliable harness or a reliable lifejacket. Stay clipped on choose a light, compact safety line and wear a dedicated line cutter in case you need to disconnect fast under load. Look after your kit. Fibres degrade in strong sun, in damp salt conditions and especially from abrasion. Destroy any safety line showing wear or contamination or after any heavy fall.store all lifejackets, harnesses and safety lines in a dry place. Trust your own kit. If you look after your own lifejacket, harness and safety line you ll know you can trust them more than anything provided or borrowed. *Expert Guidance.
