Head Coach Peter Smith Peter Smith, a 55-yearold native of Lachine, Que., was appointed head coach of the women s varsity hockey program at McGill University in 1999 and is currently in his 10th season at the helm of the Martlets in 2008-09. Smith has guided the Martlets to a berth at the CIS national championship tournament in nine of his 10 seasons, winning one gold, two silvers and four bronze medals, heading into the 2009 CIS tourney. Last season, the Martlets became the first McGill women's team in any sport to capture a CIS national championship with 2-0 win over Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the gold medal game. They went undefeated in league (18-0) and post-season action (7-0). Overall, the team posted a school record for wins with a stellar 37-4-1 mark, including 36-1-0 versus CIS opponents. This season, Smith guided the Martlets to their second straight undefeated campaign as McGill finished atop the Quebec conference with another 18-0 record, becoming the first Quebec team to post-back-to-back perfect seasons. He has earned the conference s coach-of-the-year honours for the fifth time (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and is a finalist for the CIS coach of the year honours, an award he has previously won twice -- in 2008 and in 2003 when he shared the trophy with Lisa MacDonald of St. Mary's University. He is the winningest women's hockey coach in McGill history, enters the CIS championship tourney with a career record of 259-104-27 in 390 games overall (.699) behind the McGill bench. Currently an assistant coach with the Canadian national women s team, Smith served as head coach of that squad in June 2007 and guided Canada to a silver medal at the 2008 IIHF world championships in Harbin, China. A former junior hockey player with the Lachine Rapids, Smith went on to swim for the McGill Redmen, serving as team captain from 1977 to 1979. He qualified for the CIS national swim championships in all three of his years. A member of the national team coaching staff since 2005, he helped Team Canada win gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, the 2006 Four Nations Cup in Kitchener, the 2005 Torino Ice pre-olympic tourney in Italy, the 2005 Four Nations Cup in Hameenlinna, Finland and the 2005 world championships in Linkoping, Sweden.

McGill Martlets Hockey Game Notes THE STREAK: The McGill Martlets enter the CIS national championship tournament with a 51-game win streak against CIS opponents, dating back to a 2-1 overtime shootout loss to Alberta, Dec. 30, 2007... In those 51 games, McGill has outscored their opponents by a 296-38 margin... The streak includes 24 games against teams that have been ranked in the CIS Top 10 poll... McGill has outscored those ranked teams 133-20... A closer look at the streak is available on the facing page... McGill has won 11 consecutive post-season games since a 4-0 loss to Alberta in the 2007 CIS gold medal game OVERALL RECORD THIS SEASON: The Martlets own a 37-2-0 overall record (.949), outscoring opponents 231-42, while averaging 5.92 goals for and 1.08 goals against per game... The 231 goals scored broke the team s single-season record (185) set last year... The Martlets next victory will surpass the McGill single season record established last year when they went 37-4-1 overall en route to winning the national title... McGill is 33-0 against CIS teams and 4-2 vs the NCAA... McGill posted a 17-0 record at home and have a 20-2 mark on the road... In those 33 games vs. CIS opponents, McGill has blanked the opposition 15 times, have allowed one goal 10 times, two goals six times three goals once and four goals once... The only two CIS teams that managed to score more than two goals in a game against the Martlets: Ottawa scored four on netminder Gabrielle Smith in a 6-4 McGill victory (Nov.1) and Dalhousie managed to put three behind Charline Labonté in a 10-3 Martlets decision (Nov. 22)... Nineteen of the 20 skaters on the team have scored at least one goal, including eight who have reached double figures... In 39 games overall, McGill has outscored teams 74-10 in the first period, 73-15 in the middle stanza and 84-17 in the third period... IN REGULAR SEASON PLAY: McGill finished first in the QSSFstandings, for the fourth consecutive year and the fifth time in school history, with a perfect 18-0 record in regular season play, outscoring opponents 123-14... It was the highest offensive output ever for the Martlets and marked the 10th time in 11 years that McGill had completed their league schedule over the.500 mark (after achieving only one season over.500 in the previous 26 years!)... After back-to-back seasons which featured the McGill women scoring more SHGs, than the opponents had scored on the power play (!), that quirky stat may have ended this season with the Martlets talling six SHGs but conceding eight PPGs and only three games left...
