A The Lion s Den Publication of the Elk Grove Village Lions Club June, 2011 Elk Grove Village, Illinois President s Report This is the last time I will send an article to the Den as your president. I hope this isn t the last time you hear from me. We have an exciting program for you this June at our dinner meeting. I hope all of you can come. I need to thank all of you for your help and support this year. As always thank you for letting me be your president. As always there is a lot on my mind as I try to write this. I read an article about Afghanistan today so that will be on my mind as I lay the wreath on Memorial Day in remembrance of all those who gave the most for our freedoms. Lion Wayne turned 61 in the hospital on Tuesday he is doing great and says he is tired of laying down. I would lastly like to thank the editors of the Den without them I would not sound as coherent as they make me sound. Thank you Lion Bill 1st Vice President s Report It s June and we are ready for summer! My husband and I would like to thank our Elk Grove Lions Club for the donation in memory of Lion Pat s son for the college fund for his daughter, Lucy, our 9 month old granddaughter. Larry (Pat s son) was also a Lion. Let s also keep Lion Wayne in our prayers. He has a long road ahead of him which will probably take a year or so. Let s pray for Lion Marilyn also. This has been very hard on her. I would like to thank Lion President Bill for a very successful term of office. He led by example and was the first to volunteer for whatever came along. He was strong in a quiet way and I thank him for being an example to me of what a Lion is and does. I look forward to serving the club as president starting later this month and ask all of you for your support and help to make this club all it can be. Lion Anne, 1 st VP 2nd Vice President s Report 3 rd Vice President s Report Hello fellow Lions. It is with great pride that I have served this past year as your 3 rd Vice President. Working with Lion President Bill, the Executive Board, and all the club members has been a real blessing. Unfortunately, my main focus is required elsewhere, and being unable to give 100% to the leadership needs of this fine organization, I must step aside. I would ask each of you, as I plan to do myself, to donate just 2-hours of your time each month to our club. Lion President Elect Anne will need our continued support for us to be successful in all that we do as Lions. Lion Anne will be a great President, and I wish her well. Thank you all for the support and confidence that has been extended to me this past year, and since joining the Elk Grove Lions. Have a wonderful summer! Lion Ray

Lions of Illinois Foundation Here is an easy way to help the Lions of Illinois Foundation. Every time you want to search the web, go to GoodSearch.com instead of Google or another search engine and a penny will be donated to the LIF each time you search. You can also go to GoodShop.com and shop online at Amazon, Best Buy, Toys R Us, and others, and a percentage of each purchase will go to the Foundation. It won t cost you anything and all those pennies and percentage of purchases add up to hundreds of dollars to the Foundation. This fund-raising opportunity has been featured in The New York Times, on ABC News, in O. The Oprah Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune Small Business Magazine. Lions Hearing Bus in Elk Grove On May 10 the Lions Hearing Bus pulled up to the front of the Elk Grove Pavilion. There were 26 screening over the 3 hour stop. Screenings typically take 5 minutes or so with short consultation afterwards. Several participants were from other towns that had seen the publicity in the Daily Herald. We were thanked profusely for offering this service to the community. Thanks go out to Lions Lee Garr, Rich Keyworth, Mike and Katy Baumer, and Ray Szull for volunteering on that very hot day. Dr. Alan Shapiro is this year s Grand Marshal. Shapiro is a practicing dentist in the village and serves as chair of the police and fire commission. Shapiro has held a seat on the commission since 1968 and was appointed commission president in 2004. He moved to Elk Grove Village with his wife in 1963. His untiring devotion to this position (commission president) has made it possible for Elk Grove to have the finest police and fire personnel board meeting. It is our honor to acknowledge his efforts all these years. The parade kicks off at 6pm along Elk Grove Boulevard, from Tonne to Lions Drive. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come early for the Rotary Fest and stay afterwards for the fireworks and more Rotary Fest entertainment.
Frank who started the Heart of the Marine Foundation which we have been involved with. Did You Know? Did you know that in 2010, Elk Grove Village received the Tree City USA Award for the 26 th consecutive year? A total of 150 new parkway trees were planted, and 4.200 parkway trees were trimmed and unsafe branches were removed to promote growth and improve the shape of our urban forest. In addition to the wreath laying ceremony, the Lioness assisted with refreshments that were for all who attended in the gazebo. It gladdened me to see the number of Lions and Lioness that attended. It also makes you feel proud to know that Lionism is so much a part of Elk Grove Village that we are included in ceremonies like this. As a veteran I want to thank those who came and especially Lion Bill and Lioness Ellen for a job well done. Memorial Day Elk Grove honored those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country with a ceremony held outside the pavilion. Elk Grove Lions and Lioness were represented by Lion President Bill and Lioness President Ellen at the wreath laying ceremony. The high note of the moment was a speech by the parents of Marine Lance Corporal Phillip Lions Birthdays for June Lions Dave Deering Ines Yencich Anne Feichter Happy Birthday!
