Society For American Baseball Research Baseball Records Committee Lyle Spatz, Editor February 2009 Not everything that counts is counted; not everything that is counted is worth counting. ---Albert Einstein (ALMOST) ALL THE MISSING BATTER STRIKEOUTS FOR 1900 One of the big gaps in baseball s historical record is individual batter strikeouts for the years 1897-1909. Jonathan Frankel has been trying to piece together this information and has found the most success in the year 1900. What follows is a listing by team for each player, the percentage of games (in parentheses) Jonathan was able to document, and the batter s total strikeouts for those games. MOST SHUTOUTS LOST BY A STARTING PITCHER IN A SEASON Ev Cope noted that ten of Walter Johnson's 25 losses in 1909 were by shutouts. That is the American League record for a season. Johnson also established AL records for most shutout losses to one team (5 to Chicago) and most shutout losses in a month (5 in July). Johnson s overall record was 13-25 for a Washington Senators team that finished 42-110. Date Team Score Opposing Pitcher Apr 24 NY 0-17 Joe Lake May 7 PHI 0-1 Jack Coombs May 10 CHI 0-1 (11 Inn.) Through the generosity of the Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, SABR is able to award baseball research grants to its members with the intention of later publishing that research. The maximum grant award is $1,000, and individuals are limited to one grant per year. The Yoseloff Grant Program is not restricted to any single area of baseball research, thus most projects are eligible for full or partial grant funding. The final work product of the proposed research must be suitable to be published by SABR, although copyright will remain with the author. For clarification, publication does not necessarily mean print publication. Only SABR members are eligible to be considered
