The Colorado Dahlia Society Proudly Presents: In Loving Memory Marvin Thomas Jordan January 1, 1929 November 14, 2016 Ed Cranson December 12, 1956 March 21, 2017 Creator of the HERITAGE AWARD/PLAQUE Honoring Dahlias Introduced BEFORE 1970 Named the Bernard Johansen Trophy

Introduction We are proud and delighted to display just some of the thousands of different named varieties of our favorite flower, the dahlia. This magnificent flower, the dahlia, has come a long way since it was grown for food by the Indians in Mexico and Central America, exported to Spain by botanists in 1571, and then developed and hybridized by the French, English, Dutch and Germans after the Civil War. The dahlia has reentered America in the fullness of its glory and bestows spectacular beauty and variety upon our parks and gardens. Our thanks to all who have helped present our shows: Colorado Dahlia Society, dahlia exhibitors and the show committees. Our thanks also to all who come to view the shows! George Vest President 1

GENERAL RULES 1. This is a standard dahlia show, conducted under the rules for exhibiting and judging, established by the American Dahlia Society. (ADS) 2. Membership in the Colorado Dahlia Society (CDS) is not required and no entry fee will be charged. 3. The exhibitor must grow the dahlia blooms in all divisions, except arrangement. The exhibitor may be the household such as Mr. & Mrs. 4. Entry tags can be obtained from the show manager or other society members prior to the show. 5. Entry tags must be filled out as specified in the Entry Procedures Section. The tags must be folded to conceal the exhibitor s identity and attached to the exhibit. 6. All blooms must be entered as classified as in the latest ADS Classification and Handbook of Dahlias or by the classification committee. Improperly classified blooms will not be judged. 7. Unless prohibited by special rules an exhibitor may make multiple entries in each show class, including multiple entries of the same variety. 8. Each exhibitor is responsible for placing his entries on the show tables. Unless judging has started, exhibits placed in a wrong class may be reclassified by show officials and placed in the proper class. 9. Exhibits will not be judged if they are not properly placed on the show tables by entries close time. 10. Show management reserves the right to accept or reject any entry. 11. During judging, no one will be permitted in the exhibit area except judges and necessary show officials. 12. All exhibits will be judged by accredited dahlia judges. Most senior judges on each judging team will resolve any ties or disputes. Decisions of the judges are final. 4

13. All exhibits will be judged in accordance with the latest ADS Judging Manual as revised (1-1-83). 14. Judges may not participate in decisions involving their interests. Unless otherwise stated, judges will disqualify themselves during selection of ANY class, section, division or special winner, if they have an exhibit in that class, section, division or special class. 15. Judges have the responsibility of reporting nonconformity to ADS and show rules to the judges chairman. The judges chairman has the authority to order reevaluation of a class, section or division if it is determined that it may have been incorrectly judged. 16. Stickers will be awarded to first place (blue) and second place (red) winners in each class where judges deem the exhibits worthy. 17. After judging, the show manager may remove from the show tables any bloom or exhibit that becomes unattractive. 18. Exhibits, or parts of exhibits, cannot be removed before show closing time without permission of the show manager. 19. Exhibits not removed promptly after the show s closing time will be disposed of by the show manager. 20. The show manager reserves the right to interpret these rules and to make additional rules as necessary for the proper conduct of the show. 21. Sweepstakes points are totaled as follows: 5 points per blue ribbon plus 15 points per section winner plus 25 points per court of honor winner For example: Best plate exhibit, which would be placed at the head table would be worth a total of 45 points toward the sweepstakes total. In case of a tie, 4 points per red ribbon will be added to the total. In the event a tie still exists, a flip of the coin will decide the winner. Court of Honor points are not included when calculating Amateur sweepstakes. 22. ADS Bench Evaluation Seedlings and Junior exhibits will not be counted toward sweepstakes points. 5
