Introduction from the Captain - Mr David Ford Hi everyone At the time of writing, the temperature has started to soar towards traditional Summer levels and we are in the relatively quiet period between the Ben Hogan Trophy and Captain s Day. The main competitive activity came in the form of the Mixed Matchplay Championship, a tournament renowned for outstanding shotmaking and marital upheaval! This year s Championship produced a number of extremely close tussles and a number of, frankly, severe drubbings. In the end Graeme and Fiona Thompson emerged victorious by beating Steve and Chie Crowdey in the final, 3 and 2. Congratulations to them and thanks to all who entered. The consultancy, STRI, who are working with us on improving the condition of the course, returned at the end of May to review progress. Full details are contained in Stewart s report and a number of follow up actions are planned. However, I d like to stress that in taking the correct action there will be some short term inconvenience for long term gain and a degree of patience will be required. As I m the least patient person on the planet, I appreciate the challenge facing members. The Captain s Charity Jar is proving to be an easy and lucrative way of raising money for ACCA, so keep going in the water. Congratulations to Andy Georges for being the first winner of guess the amount ; he was within 7 euros of the 368 raised. My next missive will report on the antics of Captain s Day, but I d like to thank everyone in advance for the amazing planned turnout. Pop Quiz: The winner of the Inaugural Pop Quiz was Stewart Knox, who correctly pointed out that the piano player on David Bowie s, Life on Mars, was Rick Wakeman. His prize of a sleeve of balls was impacted however by some petty thieving and naughty boy behaviour at the presentation. Such puerile activity in the future will, of course, be encouraged. This month s question: The Beatles song, With A Little Help From My Friends, has been a U.K. No 1 for three separate acts. Name all three. A sleeve of balls to the first person who approaches me with the correct answer. No emails or phone calls. Good golfing. Director of Golf - Monthly Report The Ben Hogan started the month of June and unfortunately we let it slip to the opposition who were very keen to recover the Trophy. Congratulations to them and thank you to all our members who supported the event to make it a full field. Towards the end of June we had our Mixed Pairs Matchplay, a 4 days marathon of matchplay and congratulations to Graeme & Fiona Thomson on their Victory! Graeme managed yet again to go on the board with the assistance of Fiona as it happened many times in the past! The turn out for Captain s day is very good as we have about 100 players signed in and 130 for dinner and looking to have a great day! As mention in the Captain s report and following the visit of the consultant for the golf course STRI, we will have 3 weeks of heavier works on the golf course following Captain s day mainly fairways and greens and therefore there will only be 18 holes open on a daily basis therefore I would like to ask all members for their patience as we are doing important maintenance on the golf course. The works will take 3 weeks and about 6 weeks to recover to be in the best conditions for the Gala Week in July. Do not forget to sign in for Gala Week as it is only 6 weeks away and preparation for the week are already taking place. The theme of Thrillers & Horror movies seems to cause some problems to some but I am sure there will be plenty of brilliant ideas as usual. Club Captains David Ford and Zoë Pirret presenting the Mixed Pairs Matchplay Trophy to Graeme and Fiona Thomson Also on a last note beware that as mention in the Annual Subscription letter your credit of 100 in the bar will expire at the end of June 2017 so make sure you come in for a few drinks or food and take advantage of the offer. I wish everyone a good start to the Summer and look forward to see many of you on the golf course. Mixed Pairs Matchplay runners up Steven and Chie Crowdey The May Stableford was won by Chie Crowdey and the June Medal stayed in the family as Steven Crowdey took the honor at last in a medal play. Congratulations to both! On May 7th we had a dinner in the Memory of Hamish Rumball and it was very nice to see so many of his friends attending to pay their respect. We had a great afternoon supper which I am sure Hamish would have enjoyed. Mens Roll Up May Winner Keith Fletcher receives his Voucher for Casa dos Pinheiros page 6

For the first couple of weeks in May I returned the reins of power back to Mai and disappeared off to Florida. stableford with Chie Crowdey bringing in a score of 39 points and Lisa Burns 38 points the handicap scissors were out! Chie has also played well in a club stableford and this month has reduced her handicap by 1.4, well played. The monthly medal was won by Amanda Stretton in 1st Division, Pat Murrish in 2nd Division and Sandra Seddon winning the 9 hole competition. The following week was the The following Wednesday we brought our friends along from both Algarve and UK clubs to play in our invitation, which was superbly organised by our immediate Past Ladies Captain page 9

Mai had a busy 2 weeks. It was a great day and enjoyed by all. Thanks to all those involved in the organisation and thanks to all those who contributed to the raffle which raised 1010. The following Wednesday we squeezed the ladies onto Pines/ Corks so they could put in an eclectic card, Diane Ramsey, Vera Watkins and Janet Leffler all played better than handicap well done. This month we have played friendly matches against Benamor away, Diana Collins kindly captained this match and we had a respectable loss of 2/3. We had a new friendly against Boavista at home and were decidedly unfriendly by having a pink wash they will get us back no doubt when we play there. We had a very friendly match at Laranjal with a half. The mixed pairs matchplay took place over the last weekend in May and some brave souls had to play four days in a row. Well done to the winners Fiona and Graeme Thomson and runners up Chie and Steven Crowdey. Ladies at the Benamor match very pink. Last month we raised enough money to buy 13 year old Guilherme his glasses. The Jar on the Bar raised 368.97 and the draw 195 Andy Georges guessed the amount and won the restaurant voucher. This money enabled us to get spectacles for teenage Priscilla. Following the Ladies Invitation raffle and this month s jar on the bar we will probably have managed to raise the funds to get Micael s teeth sorted and his treatment can begin. Thank you all for your generosity. Report from the Greens Committee The Committee met on Monday the 5th to discuss the latest STRI report from Conor Nolan. Present were The Captain, Christophe, Ana, Sesinando, Marco and our new recruit Duncan Evans. Knut has retired and we thank him for his input but he has a busy year ahead. Duncan is doing work on Quinta as well as PA and we believe his contribution to course maintenance but will be very helpful. Aprons to greens will be made firmer with tining and sanding. The use of sand in all areas of the course will increase and be monitored. Tee markers are being inserted on tees and staff appointed to ensure accurate placing and movements of tee blocks. The writer was able to meet Conor of STRI before he wrote his report and he volunteered that he loves this place. He sees it as having terrific prospects and we believe with the backing of the owner and following the STRI programme we can restore the course to its previous glory. The following are the main points agreed:- 1.The club will be purchasing for improved maintenance the following equipment:- Greens spin top dresser Fairway spin dresser Fairway grooming rake (year end) Delta T Probe moisture meter Set of greens groomers The cost of this equipment is circa 80000 3/4 new green staff are being recruited. From this week for three weeks nine holes will be closed leaving 18 holes always open. There will be further closures in June/July for fairway maintenance and improvement. Work will commence shortly on improving and repairing the calcada where necessary. The bunkers are being examined and where necessary sand being removed/ added and the contours improved. There will be more tree pruning and tree removing to give light to fairways. The STRI are pleased with the start made on the course, by example the percentage of bent grass on the greens has increased to 70% from 35% in a little over 4 months. The aim is to maintain and improve on this percentage and to keep the greens at a stimp reading of 9/9,5. This will allow the grasses to mature and protect the new growth with the prospect of faster, firmer greens. The committee hope members will understand that there will be a certain amount of disturbance and some short term inconvenience. There is no quick fix for getting a course in the condition we seek but we believe members will understand and be patient. We can already see improvements. Needless to say all of the committee are keeping a careful watch on progress and will ensure where ever possible that these plans are carried out in full. We are looking forward to Captains day, pity the Captain will just have to watch the rest of us! The writer and Duncan are hoping for the best! Good golfing to all Stewart Harper Chairman, David Ford Captain, Duncan Evans. page 13
