Karoonda Area School North Terrace KAROONDA SA 5307 Principal: Daniel Rankine Phone: (08) 85781120 Courier: Murray Mallee Facsimile: (08) 85781078 E-mail: dl.0756.info@schools.sa.edu.au Number: 11/2017 Monday 10 th April 2017 Dear Parents and Community Members Attendance As many of you are aware the DECD attendance target for all South Australian schools is 95%, which is the equivalent of every student having 2.5 days or less off per term. Below are the average attendance rates per class for Term 1 (data up until Friday 7/4/17 a total of 48 school days). As you can see our overall attendance rate is 93.9% and we have two classes who have achieved the required attendance rate. Congratulations to both the Year 4 class and Year 6 class for achieving the target for Term 1. The final column of the table is of particular interest as it indicates how many days on average each child must improve their attendance to ensure that each class achieves at least the minimum 95% attendance rate. For the vast majority of the classes students only need to improve their attendance by less than one day to help achieve 95%. In fact if every child was able to spend half a day more at school in Term 2 than they did in Term 1 we would achieve 95% for Term 2. Congratulations to the 13 students who have achieved 100% attendance for Term 1 so far, it a fantastic achievement. % Attendance Rate % Absence Rate Authorised % Absence Rate Unauthorised No. days needed to reach target rate Average no. days needed per student Rec/1 94.5% 5.5% 5.1% 0.4% 4.5 0.2 2/3 93.9% 6.1% 5.3% 0.8% 13.1 0.5 04 95.4% 4.6% 4.4% 0.2% -3.2-0.2 05 91.9% 8.1% 4.9% 3.2% 22.0 1.5 06 95.0% 5.0% 3.5% 1.4% -0.2 0.0 7/8 94.2% 5.8% 5.0% 0.8% 9.5 0.4 09/10 93.5% 6.5% 3.9% 2.6% 16.9 0.7 11/12 92.2% 7.8% 5.3% 2.4% 20.5 1.3 93.9% 6.1% 4.7% 1.4% 82.7 0.5

2 We are very appreciative of our families when they keep ill students home, as this reduces the chance additional students being away ill. We also appreciate that the distance families must travel to access specialist services mean absences for students. What we ask is that other absences, such as family days, exemptions (for family holidays) or unexplained, are kept to a minimum to reduce the potential impact on students achievement at school. End of Term I know I say it at the end of every term but it is hard to believe we are at the end of the eleven weeks of Term 1 already. It has been a very hectic term full of highlights, including (but not limited to): visit from Dr Jane Foster (MYTERN) the welcoming of our new teacher Tom Clark Swimming Fun Day at Lameroo Athletics Day Farm Fair continuation of Playgroup Acquaintance Night Natasha Leedham at the National Heywire Conference representing the school and region Introduction of the Mid Term Effort Reports The great learning happening in all of the classes The school term will end this Thursday 13 th April at 2:15 pm with an assembly being held at 2:00 pm in the Gym. Parents are most welcome to attend. Please be aware the school finishing time is 2:15 pm and buses will leave at 2:20 pm. Children will be arriving home 1 hour earlier and bus children will need to have someone at their pickup location an hour earlier. Wishing everyone a happy, safe and relaxing holiday. Look forward to continuing the learning in Term 2. School closes 2:15 pm Buses depart 2:20 pm Reception/Year One Update Written by Julie Boughen The children enjoyed last week s, Life Matters presentation from the Schools Ministry Group and were thoroughly engaged as always by the variety of mediums/interactives the group used to get their message across. Due to illness on Monday the children were taught by Sonja Marchant. I gave her the opportunity to use some of the Farm Fair resources she developed for educators to use pre and post Farm Fair. The children really enjoyed her input. Our library lesson will be on Thursday this week because of the holiday Friday. I would like to thank the R/1 parents and caregivers for helping their children with their reading by listening regularly; practicing their sight words and any other support you gave them during the term. Thank you also to our term one listening to reading in the classroom adults. As this is the final newsletter for term one, Karen Wegner, Dionie Kerr and I would like to wish the children and families a Happy Easter and safe school holidays. Karoonda Farm 2017 The school had three teams compete in the School Wool Handling Competition. The Karoonda Area School teams consisted of a mixture of senior Ag students. With 24 teams competing from schools around South Australia each team did a great job representing the school and did a great job working collectively in their teams. Grace O Malley, Bailey Boughen and Elliott Wegner came third in their team. The points are calculated on the wool handlers ability to clean their area, how well the fleece is thrown and lands on the wool table, how the fleece is skirted, the wool sorted in correct groups such as bellies, locks, pieces, skin pieces and shanks and the time it takes to process two fleeces. Students also participated in the sheep classing and wool judging competitions. The results of these competitions are still to be advised. It was great to see so many students stepping out of their comfort zone and having a go at new opportunities. The students all participated and interacted positively with community members and represented the school in a professional manner. 4 Bailey, Grace and Elliot third place winners Phoenix, Reanna & Jackson skirting a fleece CAROLYN JOHNSON Ag Teacher Tonya and Brittney completing the wool judging.

5 Brittney, Tonya, Cheyenne and Grace completing the wool judging. Brittney, Tonya and Cheyenne competing in the wool handling competition. Grace, Elliott and Bailey cleaning up the wool room.

7 Last Playgroup for Term 1!! Come along for some PLAY and FUN with some EASTER activities. this Wednesday from 9:00 am followed by Story time in the Library at 10:15 am NAT KOCH Playgroup Coordinator Lifesaver Life Matters Last Tuesday the Reception to Year 6 students welcomed Matt and Kieran from Life Matters - Schools Ministry Group. Matt and Kieran gave an insight as to why Christian people remember and celebrate Easter through re-telling the traditional Easter story. They used interactive stories, visual media and games. They talked about showing kindness to others, so they could learn from us. We need to show people how to be kind. Our students participated well in all the activities and games. They were keen to have a go and listened patiently. Well done! Being a Lifesaver may involve us to: To be a listening ear for someone Do something to help with a friend s problems Giving a smile when someone is down Sharing with others Looking out for someone Helping others Try to be a Lifesaver! Easter is the only time of the year when it is safe to put all your eggs into one basket Wishing you all a lovely Easter and a welcomed restful holiday!
