The following information will be discussed further with the selected members at the meeting on Monday, May 22 nd Practice Times: Official Mandatory team practices begin in August. MSHA rules require 10 team practices before an athlete can cheer at a game. School year practices: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after school. Times are TBD. Practices will run up to 2 hours. Friday workouts will be optional for JV. Other information: Practices will include a warm up, cheers/dance perfection, stunting, and conditioning. Members of the Spirit Squad will be involved in all activities listed. The team will practice wearing black shorts with black spandex under shorts. The T-shirt/tank color will be set so the teams look uniform. (Colors will be white, black, grey, or green). The girls will be required to practice with their hair up and no jewelry on according to MHSA rules and regulations. Fundraising will be done throughout the summer and season, and all members will participate. Fundraising must be pre-approved through BHS. Non-school related fundraising can be done for camp. Shoes, warm ups, etc. will be discussed when the teams are chosen. Please note: There is potential to cut the week down to Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for practice. However, this will be discussed between the coaching staff and the teams at a later time.
Requirements for 2017-2018 Cheer/Stunt team 1. Member must maintain a 2.25 GPA to be eligible to cheer. 2. Activity fees must be paid in order to participate. The activity fee much be paid before the member is eligible to begin practicing. 3. MHSA athletic eligibility forms and sports physicals must be submitted. 4. Member must comply with attendance policy. 5. Member must comply with all rules and regulations of BHS expectations for Spirit Squad form. 6. Team members must comply with MSHA rules and policies as well as policies set by BHS. 7. Parents must sign expectations and emergency contact form. 8. Cheer and stunt team member may not be involved in another activity during the season they are cheering, they are however, encouraged to participate in other activities in the off season. 9. All member will be involved with fundraising and school related support activities. 10. Uniforms are property of the athletic department at BHS in addition to bags and some pompoms. These items must be checked in and out by staff before and after season. 11. Members will be responsible for purchasing: a. WHITE no show socks b. BLACK spandex (2inch inseam) c. White cheer shoes d. Hair bow (team will get matching bows) e. Possibly pompoms which will be ordered together f. Males will get white tennis shoes and white socks g. Additional items may come up through season and fundraising can be done to pay for some of these expenses. 12. MANDATORY practices begins in August and attendance policy is put into action. Being a member of this team is a huge time commitment, it is very rewarding and will be a great experience but it does take dedication to the team. Please be aware as you plan your activities for next year.

The Tryout Process 1. The tryout clinics (Monday-Tuesday) will include learning the School Fight song, a sideline dance, and two short cheers. The applicants will perfect these along with jumps (a toe touch and jump of choice), and kicks on each side over the two day clinic. 2. Male applicants will begin basic stunting techniques and strength exercises. They will also learn the School fight Song, and cheer words. 3. The newly taught material will be judged on Thursday in front of a panel of judges and the BHS cheer staff. Tumbling is not required but can be done for bonus points during the tryouts. 4. The judges will score each applicant based on a scale given to them at the beginning of the Tryout. The final decision for the teams will be made by the coaching staff. These decision are FINAL. Any questions about the selection can be addressed to Coach Simmonds via email. Those that are not offered a position are encouraged to work on their skills and tryout again. 5. Captains will NOT be chosen during these Tryouts. 6. The teams and alternates will be announced/posted on Thursday, May 18 th, 45 minutes after the final tryout, in the BHS lobby. Once selected the athlete is asked to formally accept their position in a MANDATORY meeting for both athlete and parent/guardian. This will take place on Monday, May 22 nd at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria. At this time they will complete expectations policy and get practice information/dates ****Failure to attend this meeting will be an indication that the athlete is NOT accepting their position on the BHS Cheer team. ****
