World Volley F É D É R A T I O N I N T E R N A T I O N A L E DE VOLLEYBALL Official Bulletin No. 60 February 2011 Edition in English News First FIVB Medicine Congress a success Commissions look for progress in 2011 The first FIVB Volleyball Medicine Congress came to a close on January 15 in Bled following three days of seminars and workshops attended by medical professionals involved in both volleyball and beach volleyball. Thanks to all those for their contributions throughout the years in my career which helped me to get to this point. Dr. Reeser began his career in volleyball science 19 years ago in 1992 when he spent a month with the then USA men s team Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President With 2010 now behind us the FIVB welcomed a number of different commissions to its headquarters in January in an effort to look forward to the upcoming year and make the next 12 months better than ever. It is a testament to the endeavours of all members of these commissions that the organisation continues to strive, and in an Olympic qualifying year I m sure the proposals they have put forward, which will be reviewed at the Board of Administration and Executive Committee meetings in April, will help bring greater value to both volleyball and beach volleyball. 2011 already looks to be an exciting year and the season officially begins in just a few months with the beginning of the rebranded FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour in Brasilia, Brazil. The highlight of the beach volleyball calendar this year is sure to be the World Championships, taking place in Rome, Italy for the first time in its 14-year history. This major event is of course partnered by the Youth and Junior World Championships, both integral to the development of the sport and nurturing young players before bringing them up to the top level. Additionally, the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup continues to break down boundaries, bringing top level competition to new territories in a bid to welcome new countries to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Volleyball will also be looking towards the Olympics this year when the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Cup takes place in Japan in November and December, the World League and World Grand Prix providing appetizers for fans. All in all, 2011 should bring with it a higher standard of volleyball and beach volleyball and although this may be a quiet time for international competition you can be assured that movements are being made in the heart of the FIVB to make sure that when it does eventually begin, it will surpass all expectations. Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President The participants at the first FIVB Medicine Congress which took place in Bled, Slovenia from January 13-15 Approximately 220 professionals from all over the world met in the Slovenian city for the event, which this year focused mainly on the prevention of injuries as well as the FIVB s continued efforts in Anti-Doping education. The Congress was the first of its kind for the sport s governing body and welcomed 35 invited lecturers to share their experience and knowledge with others at the forum. The FIVB President, Mr. Jizhong Wei, praised the efforts of all those who submitted material for the Congress. All these academic and expert papers should benefit coaches, players and administrators, Mr. Wei said. Vedran Hadzic MD, president of the Organising Committee, presented small gifts to all the invited speakers as a token of thanks in the closing ceremony, and the Congress also saw the presentation of the first FIVB Sport Science Award with Dr. Jonathan Charles Reeser M.D., PhD from USA the inaugural recipient. During his professional career he has not only made a meaningful contribution to the growth of the sport but to our understanding and knowledge of volleyball sports science, Dr. Amr M. Elwani, FIVB Executive Vice-President, said in praise of Dr. Reeser. Dr. Reeser, who has dedicated most of his life to the sport, responded with modesty after receiving the award in front of his peers. I am very proud, but I don t know, if I truly deserve the award, he said. There are many other people equally as deserving. I m honoured to receive this award. physician, Dr. Lee Rice, before becoming a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission in 1995, a commission he became chair of in 1999. In that role Dr. Reeser helped direct the formation of the USA Volleyball Team Physician Program, designed to ensure that national-team athletes received expert care from team physicians while competing both domestically and internationally. That programme continues to this day. Volleyball World Grand Prix Final Round venue gets thumbs up The venue for the finals of the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Macau, China received a satisfactory pass mark on January 20 following an inspection visit by Mr. Shanrit Wongprasert of Thailand, the event s technical delegate. The venue for the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix Final Round is the Macau East Asian Games Dome Accompanied by Mr. Alex Vong and Mr. Jose Tavares, president and vice-president respectively of both the Macau Sport Development Board and the Organising Committee of the finals, Mr. Wongprasert visited various competition and training facilities together with the Galaxy Hotel, the official hotel for the event which will run from August 24-28. Ten years after successfully staging the 2001 FIVB World Grand Prix final round, Macau will once again play host to the elite international women s tournament. Mr. Wongprasert said most of the facilities in Macau met FIVB requirements, with some even exceeding the governing body s standard. While some minor improvements are still required before the finals, Mr. Wongprasert was confident that all the facilities would be ready in time, and believes that the Organising Committee will deliver a highly successful tournament. The preliminary round of the FIVB World Grand Prix will take place from August 5-21. USA won the title last year in Ningbo, China ahead of Brazil and Italy. Commissions descend on Lausanne January was a busy month for the FIVB s Commissions with a total of eight meetings taking place, seven of them at the governing body s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. While the Development, Legal, Press, Rules, Refereeing, Coaching and Technical Commissions met in Lausanne, the Medical Commission was held in Bled, Slovenia, a day prior to the first ever FIVB Volleyball Medicine Congress starting on January 13. The FIVB Commissions meet annually and help to evaluate and review the previous 12 months as well as put in place new proposals to help the sport in all aspects. These proposals are then put forward to the FIVB Executive Committee and the Board of Administration for approval who will discuss them at the next set of meetings, set to take place from April 4-8 this year. Technical & Development Warm reception for Cool Volley A brand new initiative targeting volleyball education for youngsters was announced at the FIVB Development Commission meeting held on January 11 at the world governing body s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Cool Volley, which aims to develop volleyball through schools, complements current FIVB projects such as Mass Volleyball and Volleyball at School by providing schools with the necessary tools to introduce students to the sport. Videos, training exercises, mini-games and webcasting will help teachers give students access to volleyball around the world. Cool Volley is all about bringing the enjoyment of volleyball right to the surface of the sport in an effort to show that it can be played by almost anybody, the Development Commission President and FIVB Executive Vice-President, Mr. Vicente Araujo, said. Although competitiveness is one of the most important aspects in volleyball, it is easy to forget why every athlete competing in any sport in the world first started - for fun - and Cool Volley will help teachers bring fun to students globally. Cool Volley will also provide a stepping stone to club volleyball for young people and allow upand-coming national federations to attract more players to the sport by playing it in a much simpler format, with the hope that this will encourage the emergence of clubs in places where the game is yet to be properly established. Furthermore, a number of Cool Volley will provide plenty of tools for school teachers to help motivate children to get active through volleyball educational goals can also be achieved through playing Cool Volley, including learning new playing and life skills, selfdiscipline, cooperation with others, and the idea of fair play in sport. New technical resources to be made available by FIVB The FIVB will add more tools to the top-class material currently available to national federations and instructors in the coming months by establishing a free open resource for the volleyball family it was announced at the Tech- nical Commission meeting at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on January 22. The new material will help improve FIVB courses by giving further tools to instructors FIVB Volleyball Cooperation Programme Calendar - February 2011 Dates Country Type ORG. Days From To Ghana VCP Coaches FIVB 21.02.11 28.02.11 8 Technical evaluation DVDs of both the FIVB Men s and Women s Volleyball World Championships will shortly be sent to all national federations and development centres so they can be used in coaching, refereeing and technical courses, and a Mini Volleyball publication, which aims to aid instructors, will also be distributed in March. Additional resources will be added to the newly launched FIVB development section of the FIVB website, meanwhile. It is hoped that a gallery of historical matches and library film will be uploaded along with further integration with Sponet, an online library which contains a host of educational resources for volleyball, which has over 18,000 sports-related articles available. All of the new content will be available for free from the FIVB. Adding such resources to the website will also help preserve the history of the game in a digital format. The Technical Commission also discussed the option to create a scrapbook tool for instructors in the future. This would enable those holding courses to properly plan activities and exercises, utilising the potential of the new data. 4

Bangkok hosts AVC Beach Volleyball seminar Confederations The AVC staged a beach volleyball technical and refereeing seminar in Bangkok, Thailand from January 14-16 in preparation for the marked increase in the number of beach volleyball tournaments set to take place in 2011. The seminar was part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all 25 events scheduled for this year meet the same high standard and was held with the support of the FIVB Development Centre in Bangkok. New Zealand s Andrew Hercus who chaired the control committee at last year s Asian Games Beach Volleyball competition in Guangzhou, China gave a lecture and also oversaw the theoretical and practical activities. Officials and referees from nine countries China, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Vietnam and Thailand attended the seminar. Its objectives were to ensure a coordinated approach with the AVC Referee Delegate on all activities related to referees, court personnel and volunteers, as well as the implementation of necessary security measures to keep athletes, officials, spectators, media representatives and sponsors safe. Andrew Hercus, seated centre, and FIVB Board of Administration member and Thai Volleyball Association Executive-Vice President Shanrit Wongprasert, seated second from left, presided over the opening of the seminar Hercus explained that he hoped those in attendance would make sure that the marketing of their events fulfilled the AVC s requirements; that they would report to AVC representatives on the status of the preparations for their events; and that they would ensure that the personnel involved in the events fulfilled all assigned duties thoroughly and efficiently. The AVC is subsequently scheduled to hold a volleyball technical and refereeing seminar in Beijing, China in February. Coaches on learning curve in Gambia The Gambia Volleyball Association staged a four-day volleyball coaches clinic at the Gambia National Olympic Committee in Bakau from January 24-27. The course provided Africa Zone II coaches with an opportunity to share and enhance their knowledge and was held in collaboration with the FIVB Development Centre in Senegal. The centre s goal is coaching and athlete development leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and although this was not an official FIVB course, it showed that there is a strong desire to develop the sport in the region. Mbaye Deme, who is the director of the FIVB Development Centre in Senegal and an FIVB instructor, led the course and was very pleased with the contribution of the participants. The coaches are doing are great job, said Deme, while acknowledging there was still room for improvement. Participants at the volleyball coaches course in Gambia came from throughout Africa Zone II 5

Confederations Brazilian Tour marks 20th birthday with new teams The Banco do Brasil Tour celebrated its 20th birthday as the latest edition of the competition, established in 1991, began on January 13 on Camburi Beach in Vitoria, Espirito Santo. The tour is scheduled to pass through Rio de Janeiro, Guaruja, Curitiba, Balneario Camboriu and Santa Maria between January and April before heading to Salvador, Aracaju, Maceio, Recife, Joao Pessoa and Fortaleza between September and December. The best 11 individual results of each player will be used to determine the season s champions. In this pre-olympic season, the appearance of new Brazilian teams has been closely observed not only on the national tour but also on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour. Last year s national champions, Pedro Cunha and Thiago Santos, are not sharing the same side of the court in 2011, with Pedro having decided to resume his partnership with Pedro Salgado, his partner at the 2009 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch Junior World Championships. Thiago, meanwhile, picked the World Tour s Most Outstanding Player in 2008 and 2009, Harley Marques, as his new partner. In the female event, the top three teams from last season Juliana Felisberta da Silva and Larissa França, Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli, and the Salgado sisters, Maria Clara and Carolina remain together while Olympians Ana Paula and Renata Trevisan have joined forces again. The 2010 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour champions, Juliana and Larissa, teamed up again for the new Brazilian national tour which began on January 13 Meanwhile, the Brazilian Volleyball Federation has decided to improve its Under-21 tour and as a result the tournament this year will feature 12 events, all to be played prior to the national tour stops at the same venues. Chile pair look for improvement Defending women s Chilean Beach Volleyball Circuit champions Carolina Piña and Francisca Rivas headed the rankings of the 2011 circuit after four rounds of what is turning into an intense and exciting battle for the crown. After events in Anakena, Maitland, Windows and Iquique, Rivas and Piña topped the leader board. It is a tough tournament, Piña said. The fight is getting harder every time and we work a lot to keep on top. The duo were leading the rankings with 1,640 points but are keen to improve and add to their experience. Now we see the fruits of the work we did in Brazil, Rivas added. We have improved a lot, but this is not enough, we must continue working to stay the best pair in Chile. In February they were due to get the chance to continue their progress with the South American Beach Volleyball Tour returning to the country for the first time since 2009. Czechs take colourful approach to attracting new generation Nobody can accuse Czech volleyball of lacking colour after the country s volleyball planners launched a bright new scheme to encourage children to take up the game at the end of last year. The Czech Volleyball Federation (CVS) will co-host the CEV Men s European Championship with Austria in September, but while older spectators are guaranteed to attend the event, the CVS is banking on something else to attract a new generation to the sport namely its Colour Volleyball project for youngsters aged between six and 12. Colour Volleyball comprises five different games, each for a different age group and each assigned a colour yellow, orange, red, green or blue. The yellow category, for instance, involves children just throwing and catching the ball, while the blue category, for older children, is a three-against-three game. The CVS has already staged several events, notably a tournament at the Sportcentrum in Nymburk, some 45km from Prague, which took place from December 27-28 last year, and drew large numbers with 560 children playing across 26 courts. It was certainly a The CVS has already staged several events, notably a tournament at the Sportcentrum in Nymburk, held on December 27-28 last year, which drew 560 children playing across 26 courts colourful occasion with every youngster wearing a T-shirt coloured according to his or her category. It was a unique tournament, Radek Krpac, press officer for the Czech Federation, said. The organisers did a great job in making it a success. There were prizes for the winning teams but, as Krpac added, the important thing was the feeling that the children enjoyed it. The project will continue this year with a tournament in April in Karlovy Vary and another in May in Prague the two venues for the European Championship. It will then culminate from September 10-12 with another event in Karlovy Vary where youngsters will have a chance to see Europe s finest in action once they have completed their own games. 6

Cubans vote for Volleyball Confederations Cuban volleyball proved the most popular sport in the annual poll of the Caribbean country s best national teams and athletes. Volleyball earned the vote for best team sport after a year in which the men s national team won silver at the FIVB World Championship and finished fourth in the FIVB World League. Another feather in the sport s cap was the gold medal claimed by the Cuba boys team at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, not to forget the 12 medals won on the Beach Volleyball NORCE- CA Circuit. Robertlandy Simon and Kenia Carcaces were the most outstanding players of their respective men s and women s teams while Wilfredo Leon and Alexis Lamadrid also made the top-10 list. These players topped the list of the best players selected by the Cuban federation, which was completed by Raydel Hierrezuelo, Yoandy Leal and Yoana Palacio, juniors Cuba celebrate reaching the 2010 FIVB Men s World Championship final Yassel Perdomo and Yonder García, and beach volleyball players Kirenia Ballar, Sergio Gonzalez and Yoendry Kindelan. Mexico and Canada join Dominican hosts for training camp Mexico, Canada and the Dominican Republic s youth and junior teams started the new year hard at work with the three squads training and scrimmaging together at the volleyball complex in Santo Domingo throughout January. Mexico s pre-youth and youth players arrived on January 2 for a two-week stay in the Dominican capital where they began their preparations for the FIVB Volleyball Girls Youth World Championship 2011 in Ankara, Turkey in August. The Canadian junior team from Edouard Montpetit College of Quebec meanwhile, travelled to Santo Domingo for a 12-day training camp, which concluded on January 18. This time a year ago The FIVB confirmed that Rome would be the setting of the 32nd biennial World Congress while the Coaching, Refereeing and Rules Commissions came together for the first time in a landmark meeting at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
