Generally, my research questions focus on population ecology and management. Specifically, my interests revolve around the issue of density dependence in herbivores. To this end, I work with mule deer, moose, and bighorn sheep. However, my purview and expertise also extend to elk, whitetailed deer, pronghorn, mountain goats and other mammalian species. A core objective of my research is to enhance the management and conservation of mammalian species through the integration of new and emerging theory with classical experimentation. To complete rigorous and original research, I break my responsibilities into 5 categories: project identification, design, implementation (including funding concerns), data analysis and publication. My specific research projects have included: assessing the influence of habitat management on mule deer vital rates, evaluating the impacts of harvest management on mule deer recruitment, manipulation of bighorn sheep abundance to evaluate density dependence, and assessing life history characteristics of moose and evaluating this information in context of annual harvest management and license setting. Bozeman, Montana 59715 Supervisor: Bob Garrott (Associate Professor) Duties: This position was a graduate research position that resulted in my Master s degree in Fish and Wildlife Management. My focus in this position dealt with the identification and development of a researchable hypothesis that addressed the multi-dimensional management issues of large carnivore conservation and ungulate management in and near Yellowstone National Park. I specifically worked on the spatial ecology and movement behavior of wolves as it related to the distribution and vulnerability of elk and bison. This research was directly linked to predator/prey dynamics, community ecology, and the evaluation of populations and behavior in a changing landscape. Due to the spatial extent of these wildlife populations, this research required collaboration and interaction with federal and state biologists, university faculty, and other graduate students.
