LMU at UC IRVINE (1-5) Sunday, December 16, 2001-2:00 pm - Irvine, Calif. UP NEXT The Loyola Marymount women s basketball team goes on the road for its only game of the week. The Lions travel to Irvine, Calif., to face the struggling UC Irvine Anteaters this Sunday, Dec. 16. RECENTLY The Lions won their sixth game of the season last week defeating Long Beach State 76-68 at home. The win kept LMU perfect while playing in the confines of Gersten Pavilion, the Lions are 4-0 on their home court this season. Senior Bryn Britton, junior Kate Murray and sophomore Raelen Self each had careernights against The Beach. Britton netted a personal-best 34 points, while Murray set a new career mark with 10 assist. Self s 10 points was also a career best for her. BRITTON EARNS HER SECOND WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS Bryn Britton earned WCC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season by leading the Lions to a 1-0 record this week, 6-2 overall. Britton, a guard, scored a career-high 34 points in LMU s win over Long Beach State, which is only five points shy of the LMU single-game scoring record. She was 13-of-20 (.650) from the field, netting 3-of-6 (.500) from behind the arc and 5-for-7 (.714) from the charity stripe. Britton also picked up seven boards, two assists, two steals and one block. The Lions have won the award the last three straight weeks. LIONS PROTECT THEIR DEN LMU s win over Long Beach State last Thursday night gives the Lions a perfect 4-0 record when playing at home in Gersten Pavilion this season. The Lions will not see their home court during competition until Dec. 28 when they host Marist College at 7 p.m. Following that, LMU s next home games come in January of next year when they open West Coast Conference action against San Francisco and Saint Mary s on the weekend of the 11th and 12th. Last year s Lions recorded 11 home wins tying the record for single-season games won in Gersten Pavilion. MURRAY S MONEY FROM THE LINE Junior Kate Murray has been almost automatic from the free-throw line for the Lions. Murray is shooting an unconscious.909 from the charity stripe putting in 20 of her 22 attempts this season. She recorded 13 straight free-throws before missing her first of the year in the first half of the Lions game against George Mason two weeks ago. Murray went into that game a perfect 11-for-11 from the line. Murray s current percentage stands as the best ever in a single season. 2001-02 Loyola Marymount Women s Basketball Roster No Name Pos Ht Yr-Exp Hometown (Previous School) 3 Raelen Self G 5-6 So-1V Waipahu, HI (Kamehameha School) 5 Claudine Auld G 5-7 Jr-TR Corona, CA (Riverside CC) 10 Michele Brown G/F 5-11 So-1V Union City, CA (Logan HS) 12 Jasmin Matthews G/F 6-0 So-1V Corona, CA (Centennial HS) 22 Kate Murray G/F 6-0 Jr-2V Tigard, OR (Jesuit HS) 23 Adrianne Slaughter C 6-2 So-1V Englewood, CO (Cherry Creek HS) 24 Rosa Bernasconi G 5-6 Sr-3V Guadalupe, AZ (Seton Catholic) 25 Bryn Britton G 5-11 Sr-3V Porterville, CA (Monache HS) 32 Jacquelyn Woods F 6-0 Fr-HS Ashland, OR (Ashland HS) 33 Mary Turner G/F 5-10 Fr-HS Rancho Cucamonga, CA (Chaffey HS) 34 Shannon Wosman C 6-4 Jr-2V Rowland Heights, CA (Bishop Amat HS) 44 Jennifer Henry C 6-3 Fr-HS Etiwanda, CA (Etiwanda HS)

She loves the sun, the sand, the water and the career-high 34 points she burned The Beach, Long Beach State that is, for last Thursday night. Britton, a 5-11 native of Porterville, Calif., went 13-for-20 from the floor against Long Beach and hit 3-of-6 from long distance. Her 34 points puts her tied for third all-time on the single-game scoring chart and came just five points shy record. Britton broke her personal-best mark of 33 points which she set against Santa Clara (1/16/99). She put up 21 of her 34 points in the first half alone and finished the night shooting.650. Britton also made quick work of the easy points draining 5-of-her-7 attempts from the charity stripe. The free-throws made and attempted were a season-high for her. As if scoring at will against Long Beach State wasn t enough, Britton also went to work on the boards cleaning up the glass for a team-leading seven rebounds on the night. ENJOYING HER SELF AT THE BEACH Sophomore Raelen Self also had an enjoyable evening against The Beach last Thursday night. Self recorded a career-high total of 10 points against LBSU and was the only other Lion aside from teammate Bryn Britton to score in double digits that night. The 5-6 Hawaiian native attempted a personal-best 11 field goals and connected on three of them. She also drained two of her six attempts from beyond the arc on her way to a career night. Her previous career mark of nine points was set in her first game as a Lion last year against San Diego State (11/21/00). She matched that mark later in her rookie campaign against San Diego (2/10/01). YET ANOTHER CAREER-NIGHT AT THE BEACH Junior Kate Murray was the third Lion to ring up a career-night against Long Beach State last week. Murray started and played 37 minutes as she collected a personal-best 10 assists against The Beach. She smashed her old mark of six assists which she set against San Francisco (1/27/01) and then matched again against the Lady Dons (2/23/01). Murray is currently third among Lions with 25 assists this season. BRITTON LOOKING TO LEAVE HER MARK Senior guard Bryn Britton is well on her way to leaving LMU as the top scorer in women s basketball team history. The Porterville, Calif. native ended last season with 1,248 career points ranking her second to assistant coach Lynn Flanagan on the all-time points chart. Flanagan (1988-91) ended her four-year career as a Lion player with 1,436 points. Britton has tallied 134 points this season bringing her career total to 1,382, just 54 points away from taking over the title from Flanagan. Should Britton keep up with her current 16.8 points per game average she ll take over Flanagan s title before the end of the year. THE BERNASCONI BULLETIN Senior Rosa Bernasconi is inching her way into LMU history. The 5-foot-6 Arizona native currently has 853 career points and is 147 points away from reaching the 1,000 point plateau. Bernasconi who tallied 265 points as a freshman, 423 as a sophomore and 117 as a junior should have no problem attaining her 1,000th point in this her final year as a Lion. THE WILHOIT FILE Head Coach Julie Wilhoit captured the WCC Coach of the Year Award for the second straight season in 2000-01. Wilhoit, who enters her seventh season at the helm of the women s basketball program at LMU, led the Lions to a record breaking season last year. Under her direction, LMU set new school records for single-season overall wins (21) and single-season conference wins (10). She led the Lions to a 21-10 overall record, a 10-4 mark in conference play, to within a game of LMU s first ever regular-season conference championship, to their first appearance in the WCC tournament championship game and to their first ever postseason game. She was the first LMU women s basketball coach to earn the top coaching nod in 1999-00, the first to have earned it in consecutive seasons at LMU and only the second coach in WCC history to garner the award two straight years. She was named the fourth head coach in the program's history on June 30, 1995. Wilhoit came to LMU after a two-year stint at the University of Pittsburgh- Bradford. With the Lions, she holds a 68-108 (.386) overall record and 27-63 (.300) record in West Coast Conference play. Wilhoit is in her 14th year as a head coach and owns a 189-178 (.515) overall record. WILHOIT WIN WATCH Head Coach Julie Wilhoit is nearing a milestone in her 14 year coaching career. Wilhoit, a native of Osgood, Ind., has recorded 189 career coaching victories and is just 11 wins away from achieving her 200th win as a head coach. Should the Lions continue their current hot streak, Wilhoit will achieve the feat well before the end of the season. 2001-02 WCC Standings Conf. The Anteaters began their 2001-02 season with a win over San Francisco (59-48) but have been unable to put up another victory. UCI has lost five straight games since the win over USF, three of which came in overtime periods. The Anteaters have played just two games at home so far, recording losses to UNLV (72-51) and Idaho State (84-76) in those contests. Cindy Oparah and Brandy Hudson are the only two UCI athletes averaging double digit scoring totals. Oparah leads the Anteaters with a 16.8 points per game average while Hudson is averaging 11.2 points per game. Oparah is averaging a double-double as she also collects 12.0 rebounds per game. Although UCI owns a 7-2 advantage over LMU, the Lions won last year s meeting (66-63). WEEKEND REVIEW VS. LONG BEACH STATE - DEC. 6 LMU recorded its sixth win of the year with a 76-68 victory over Long Beach State on Thursday night in front of 439 in Gersten Pavilion.
