Dear Potential SFHS Guard Member and Parents, Welcome to one of the most exciting organizations available to your student! The Color Guard program at South Forsyth High School offers many varied performance opportunities and gives students the chance to learn new performance skills in dance and pageantry. Our members learn the values of being on a team, along with other lessons geared at building strong, positive friendships and academic life. We strongly believe that there is a place for everyone in the band and guard program. We have hundreds of success stories. Many times, members who think that they may not be interested have become some of the most dedicated members once they have been a part of the experience. If you choose to participate, you can reap a variety of rewards. In addition to all of this, you become a member of a very active, multifaceted family. The South Forsyth Color Guard program has established itself as one of the top programs in the state and southeast, and we strive to offer the best available instruction and the widest array of events for our members. We hope that you share in the excitement of creating exceptional opportunities for the students. We encourage parents to be active supporters of our efforts through booster club participation, assistance in fundraising, and through volunteer work such as chaperones, equipment crew, or as a parent committee leader. We also hope that you will be visible supporters of the students by attending as many performances as possible. The information included in this packet should help answer any questions and orient you and family with the many different aspects of the program. Attendance at future Band Booster Meetings--monthly meetings designed to keep families knowledgeable of all aspects of our program--is still advised. The band program produces a Calendar online at our website (www.sfhsbands.org); you will want to keep it nearby. Feel free to call any Director or Band Booster officer for help and to get questions answered. Rarely do you see such a large group of students assembled in one organization with such a strong focus on achieving excellence! Take the opportunity to get to know the instructors, other parents and the members who make our success a reality. On behalf of all the High School Directors and Staff: Paul Clark Director of Bands, South Forsyth High School Phone: 770-781-2264 ext 10045 Email: pclark@forsyth.k12.ga.us

Objectives of the Guard Program The South Forsyth Color Guard is an integral part of school life and are recognized as an all-school activity. The band program and color guard are one of the largest and most active voluntary student organizations and its members form an active grou. The Primary objectives of the program are: Cultural - To foster the continued development of movement, music, and performance appreciation through the pageantry arts Educational To develop interested and discriminating performers, provide a well-rounded performance education and prepare members for leadership and performance activities beyond high school. Service - To lend color and atmosphere to certain school and community affairs while promoting and enhancing the dignity and reputation of South Forsyth High School at all appearances. Citizenship To develop the ability to function as a responsible member of a team, to enhance the members ability to interact with others in a positive manner, and to develop the ability to function as a responsible member of the community. Recreational - To provide all members with the opportunities for positive use of leisure time, an emotional outlet, and strong, positive social experiences. Color Guard Marching Band (Summer Fall) The South Forsyth Color Guard is a part of the South Forsyth High School Marching Band. The Guard is a non-musical section that provides additional visual aspects to the performance. The Color Guard interprets the music the marching band is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, sabers, mock rifles or other pieces of equipment and through choreographed dance. Rehearsals Since the Marching Band is an extra-curricular activity, its rehearsals schedule falls almost entirely outside of the typical school day. Marching Band Rehearsals are as follows but not limited to: Spring Marching Camp May 17 and 18. This is where we do a complete orientation of our program, as well as begin learning fundamentals Summer Section Rehearsals Tuesday and Thursdays, 5p-8p. These rehearsals are where we learn and develop fundamental skills in movement and equipment. Band Camp July 22-26 (9a-4p) and July 29-August 2 (9a-9p). This is where we learn our performance shows. School day rehearsals See Calendar for specific sectional days and times. Sectional Rehearsals An additional rehearsal per week devoted to just the members of a particular section Extra Rehearsals Typically on a Saturday in the month of August and September A Detailed Calendar with all rehearsal dates and times will be provided to each student that gains membership into the Color Guard.
