Page-2 - Boulder Basin Outfitters January, 2017 Pack Trips & MORE The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is our summer camp. Pack Trips W e offer a wide variety of trips to fit your abilities and desires. The trips we offer range from 2 to 10 days. You can do a base camp trip and explore the region around that camp or do a progressive trip and travel to several new camp sites during your trip. Travel on horses up mountain valleys and across mountain passes, and let the beauty take your breath away. Then set camp next to some of the most pristine lakes and rivers. We ride an average of 4 to 5 hours a day and cover 10 to 15 miles per day. Our camps are clean and comfortable, sleeping tents are made of waterproof canvas and we provide sleeping pads. Solar showers and latrines are available. Canvas flies and tarps will offer shelter from sun and occasional rain shower. Sit around the campfire in cozy chairs and enjoy the camaraderie of friends and family, telling jokes and stories of days gone by and hear an occasional cowboy song. Cooks will prepare meals over the fire and on propane stoves and are served family style. Enjoy entreés like steaks, chops, chicken, burgers, and spaghetti for dinner, as well as all the fixings, light appetizers and wine. Breakfasts include bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes plus many more options. Lunches are usually sack lunches (because we are usually out on the trail exploring). BIGHORN SHEEP, goats & moose Bighorn sheep are one of the most prestigious animals to hunt in Wyoming. Most hunters have many years into gathering preference points. We don t take that lightly and understand that this is a once in a life time tag. The guides we hire are proven veteran sheep guides who live and breathe sheep hunting. We hunt areas 1 thru 5 in northwest Wyoming. We access these areas with horses and mules to our spike camps. Hunts are 10 days in length and you will be accompanied by your guide and a cook/ wrangler. In 2017 we had one sheep hunter; Ricky Martin joined Buck Porter in mid-september for his sheep hunt in area 1. Unfortunately, the weather turned bad with heavy snow and poor visibility, so they left the mountain with no ram. We planned for Ricky to return late in October; it was during this time that he and Buck spotted the mature ram, and could harvest him. We also offer moose and goat hunts: we hunt using spike camps and day hunting. Moose will take 11 + points to draw, and Goat is a once in a life time. TOP QUALITY HUNTS Rick Martin harvested this beautiful ram. Elk selfie. Boulder Basin Outfitters January, 2017 - Page-3 COW ELK We offer cow hunts from our wilderness camp and from our ranch house. These hunts are 3 days in length, and offer a great hunting opportunity as well as some of the best meat around. If you are interested in a cow hunt we can get you set up. Michael Johnson with this impressive archery bull. Paul Senft with his archery bull. ARCHERY ELK We offer Three: 7-day archery hunts during the month of September. The dates are 9/3-9/9, 9/12-9/18 and 9/21-9/27. These hunts are very productive and we average 90+% opportunity with a 33% kill rate across the board. (State average is 12-15% kill rate) These are pack in hunts on horses to our wilderness tent camp. Please see section on camp for the accommodations. Michael Johnson Joined us on the first hunt, and He & Ethan only hunted a couple days; to harvest a nice 6-point bull. On the second hunt 4 hunters joined us. We had a few storms move thru; which quieted the bulls down for a couple days. Paul and William were hunting with cross bows, and were both able to get bulls in range and kill. Patrick and Thomas had some close opportunities but were not able to connect. On the third hunt, we again had 4 hunters. The bulls were very active, bugling, and becoming very responsive. Hunter Jason Kempen and Carl were the only ones to kill a bull even though they were rutting hard. The other hunters hunted hard and had close opportunities, but were not able to kill a bull. We had another great archery season!

Page-4 - Boulder Basin Outfitters January, 2017 With these licenses being so difficult to draw we go the extra mile to give the hunter the best opportunity to kill the bull of his dreams. In the past years, we have killed many of the top bulls in the state of Wyoming and we have received awards and recognition for these bulls. If you have points built up in Wyoming, please gives us a call and we would be happy to discuss the options that may work for you. The areas we hunt are 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59 & 66. This year we took 6 late season bull hunters; 2 in 59, 3 in 53 and 1 in 56. We hunt area 59 from my base camp in Boulder Basin, this has proven over the years to be one of the best late season bull hunt in the state: this year was no exception. Our first hunter Justin Raymer rode in with us on Halloween; as we prepared for opening day. November 1st, I rode to one of my look out spots to glass for bulls. We arrived before day light, and shortly after we started finding bulls scattered around the country. We figured we spotted 100 bulls that first morning. We had found a couple bulls that we felt required a closer look, as we moved closer to where they were we spotted several more bulls off to our left. We knew right away the one bull was good so I put the scope on him and did a rough calculation: I scored him around 380. Justin felt like he wanted to shoot TOP QUALITY HUNTS LATE SEASON BULLS Greg with an awesome late season bull. this bull so we moved closer and found a good rest for the shot. We ranged him at 450 and with some quick adjustments Justin fired and the big bull crumpled. This was a massive 6x7 bull that scored 385 5/8. The next week resident hunter George Joest rode into camp with us, we decided to go out that evening and do some scouting. We spotted a bull in the distance and decided in the morning we would get closer for a better look. The next morning, we moved quietly thru the dark woods to where the big bulls had been seen. Soon daylight came and the big bull was nowhere to be found, At least on our side of the mountain. I spotted 5 bulls across the valley, but could not tell anything about them, as we were looking into the sun. We decided to get closer and after about an hour we were close enough to score the bull. We were still 500 yards but We offer 3; seven-day rifle elk hunts from our wilderness tent camp in Boulder Basin. These are horseback hunts, and are high success hunts. The bulls are 5 &6 point, and will score 280+. Our first hunt 9/30-10/6 we had 8 rifle hunters in camp. Tom and John Hafeman Joined us again with a group of their friends. First morning Tom Killed a beautiful 6x7 bull. There was another 6-point bull there, but John was not able to get a shot at him. The next day John and I went back to where we had last seen the bull and found him. John shot the bull and he stumbled into the trees: when we turned around there was a grizzly bear coming towards us. We chased the bear off and headed over the hill to find the bull. When we got to where we had last seen the bull I eased into the trees to try to find the elk. Unfortunately, the bull had moved further than we had expected. I returned to the horses, and that bear had tracked us down the hill and caught the scent of the blood; he went around us and started tracking the elk. We knew the bear would claim the elk, but decided to follow the tracks so we could recover the horns when the bear was finished. We tracked for a way and the elk had joined another bunch of elk. The Bear was a young bore and got confused, and like us was unable to follow the sign. I knew the elk would die so decided in a couple days I would go back to the area and look for blood. Several days later I went back to the area and found the elk and 4 bears, I decided to wait until the next week to recover the horns; I was able to recov- RIFLE HUNTS er the horns the next week. Hunters Jeremy ward and Steve Collins joined guide Ethan, and were both able to kill nice 6 point bulls. Jim Rettler, Mark Beder; Bill Schnitzer & Todd Kultgen had some opportunities but were not able to connect. Sorry guys maybe next time. With the snow, we received during the prior 2 weeks the elk were really starting to migrate on the second hunt. We had 6 bull hunters and 2 cow hunters in camp on the second hunt (10/8-10/14). Andrew Bowen Brought another group buck this year, and Guide Clayton Langan Joined our guide team. Clayton Andrew and Robert Bowen teamed up and they both killed nice bulls. Bruce Holliday and cow hunter Bob Ernst joined me on the hunt. Bob made short work of his hunt by killing a cow the first day of the hunt. The next day Bruce killed a 6x6. Bob Harten Matt Boos teamed up with Seth Ballard. Matt also killed a cow on the first day of the hunt, and Bob followed suite a couple days later; by killing a nice 6-point bull. Philip and Richard Knock joined Ethan, and they hunted a couple days but soon had killed a couple nice bulls. As the hunt ended we were 8 for 8 and looking forward to the next week. The third hunt (10/16-10/22) started off fast; on the first day of hunting Brian Geary, Ralph Zappala & myself headed to Castle Creek to try to get on a bunch of elk we had spotted. Ethan was going around the other way to cut them off. He and hunters Alan Geary & Kevin Mogolia ran into a herd on the way over and they killed a big 6x6, and as it turned out was Kevin with a great bull. the biggest bull of the general season. Mean time we got into the bunch of elk, and Brain killed a real nice 6 point. Ralph had held out trying for a bigger bull than the last time he was here, but wasn t able to harvest one bigger, but did kill a nice 6 point. Kevin killed a really nice 6 point later I scored the bull within an inch. George made a great 500 yard shot and the tumbled down the hill. The bull was unique as both of his third points had hooks at the end: the bull scored 386 7/8. We had 3 hunters in area 53, but was unable to find a bull the hunters wanted to shoot. Warm weather seemed to of hold the migration up in the area. Greg Davis drew an area 56 type 1 tags, and chose us as his outfitter. The first day of the hunt I rode in to hunt a couple of my favorite spots. We had seen 20-25 bulls but nothing elite. Later in the hunt we spotted a bull that we wanted to get a closer look at: well lets say we got too close, and spooked the bull before Greg could get a shot. We figured the bull would score around 370. We hunted several more days looking for that bull but was un able to locate him. A huge storm came in and dumped 24 of snow on us. We had spotted another big bull, but by the time we got to him the next day he had moved onto private property. The last day came around and we decided to try another drainage: the temperatures at day light were somewhere around 20 below zero. We spotted 5 bulls up on the ridge and decided to shot the 1 bull. We ranged the bull at just under 600 yards, found a solid rest band Greg put 3 out of 4 rounds in the great beast. We figured the bull around 350; what a great last day bull. that week. Texas hunters Ken Chalk, Nathan Green & Ben Leman joined guides Mike White and Seth Ballard. Nathan and Ken both killed nice bulls on the same day. Ben went a few days and he found a bull he liked and filled his tag. We finished 7 for 7 and all were big 6 points.

We have a cook fly where the cook prepares the meals and a BS fly that our guest can get under in case of the occasional rain shower. We also have the comforts of a latrine and shower. Chairs add to the comfort around the camp fire. Our cook prepares family style meals over the fire and gas stove, appetizers and cocktails are served nightly along with dessert to top the evening meal off. Our hunting camp consists of a 16x40 dining tent where we eat and socialize. The sleeping tent is a canvas 10x12 tent with cots, foam pads and a wood stove. We also have a latrine and shower for your convenience. Our chef prepares and serves family style meals with the entire fixings. You would be hard pressed to find a better meal at a 5 star restaurant! MULE DEER AND ANTELOPE We offer three 5 days deer hunts from our ranch house; starting October 25th -29th, 10/31-11/4, 11/6-11/10. We access the wilderness on horses to hunt for the day, and return to the ranch at night. Most of the areas we hunt are general, but do offer some limited quota areas. We also offer a wilderness tent camp hunt from our boulder camp: This is a 6-day hunt. On average, we harvest 4 & 5-point deer that score 150 to 170 inches, and our success rates average 85-90% On mature buck deer. This past fall we had 5 deer hunters, and we killed 3 nice deer. The 2 hunters who did not kill left early after 2 days of hunting. Kathryn also had a deer tag again this year and she killed another nice buck. We have multiple antelope areas we hunt around the state of Wyoming. Some of these areas are very difficult to draw and others are easy we will discuss with you to see what options work for you. These hunts are 3 days in length and we hunt from 4 wheel drives and ATVs. We hunt from my ranch house, motels and sometimes a wall tent camp. These are high success hunt on mature buck antelope. Paul and his non-typical buck. Carl's corner Awesome back straps. I wasn t sure if we could get much busier than what we had in 2015, But 2017 blew it away. Our summer trips were busier than ever; with 2 and sometime 3 pack trips going out at one time. With our Orvis endorsement, we get a lot of fly fishers come to enjoy our pristine rivers. We had several all-women s groups come into fish and did several Cody To Jackson trips. Our fall was busy as well. After taking all 3 places in Wyoming for the top archery bulls the year before; We were excited to get the season started. We had 9 archery hunters and killed 4 great bulls. Rifle season started slow, but we finished strong: killing 17 for 21 and all 6 point. Late bull hunts were down a bit, but that goes that way with the draw. WE killed some amazing bulls. We again had the Girls of BBB come back for another cow hunt this year. We went 6 for 6 and had a great hunt. We had 22 cow hunters this past year and killed 18 cows. The deer season was good despite the weather warming up. We were 3 for 5 and the 2 guys that didn t fill left early. Happy Trails, Carl Sauerwein

Boulder Basin Outfitters January, 2017 - Page-7 We are booking our general season elk camp 2 years out if you are interested in a spot. We highly recommend you contact us to discuss dates and put a $500 deposit down on the hunt accompanied by a reservation form. This is the only way to secure a spot with us. If you apply for and draw a license then call us at that point to book a spot, we IMPORTANTINFORMATION probably will not have an opening for you. You can find reservation forms on our website or contact us and we can email one to you. You can pay with a check, money order or credit card. We do this on a first come first serve basis. You may also ask and we can email our refund policy. If you book a spot with us for elk YOU MUST PUR- CHASE PREFERENCE POINTS to increase draw odds you can ask and we can instruct you on how to do this. We also highly recommend travel insurance this will protect you if you are unable to come on your hunts and have to cancel after you have drawn licenses. There are several choices available; if you are a member of SCI they have a travel insurance that is good, the other is travel guard thru AIG insurance. One thing I cannot express enough is physical fitness. This is a horseback hunt in the Rocky Mountains so doing some physical fitness before your hunt will greatly increase your odds at harvesting an animal. We also recommend riding some before your hunt so you are more comfortable on a horse. WE do have weight restrictions of 275 lbs. for our horses. The Tetons. Robert Bowen with an awesome bull. PREFERENCE POINTS If you are planning to hunt with us in the future, we highly recommend that you purchase a preference point each year, even if you are not applying for a license on any given year. Tips are very much appreciated by the GUIDE, COOKS and WRANGLERS for a job well done. We expect the staff to work hard and take care of the client; however, we cannot say how individuals will get along. We believe that our job is not done until the meat is at the processor and you have been introduced to the taxidermist. At this time, you can decide how much you wish to tip your guide. Years ago an average tip was $100; now the average is somewhere above $100 each for the Cook & Wrangler and around 10% BOULDER BASIN OUTFITTERS of your total hunt to the guide. Each hunter will have to decide upon the amount based on his own experience and financial abilities. This is not a subject we like to discuss as we feel this is your decision; however, we feel ALL the STAFF needs to be adequately tipped without adding a gratuity to your bill. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us. References We do have references but due to privacy rights, will only give them out upon request. If you would like to check out some of our references, please feel free to contact us. Meat Processing We have a meat processor in Cody. They will ship your meat right to you. Due to being the only processor in town; they most likely will not be able to do rush orders as they are so busy. If you choose not to have your meat processed here, bring some large coolers and you can take it home with you. Taxidermy There are many taxidermists around the country and you may have a preference. If not, the only one we recommend is Nature's Design Taxidermy in Cody, Wyoming. They do beautiful work and their turn-around time is usually 6 to 8 months. www.naturesdesigntaxidermy.com Contact Information Boulder Basin Outfitters, Inc. Carl Sauerwein 3348 Northfork Hwy.
