What is the South Calgary House Hockey League? (Background) The purpose of the South Calgary House Hockey League (SCHHL) is to provide recreation players the opportunity to play hockey with a fixed schedule, limited travel, while providing the participants the opportunity to play other sports. Some Calgary Hockey Associations have been operating House Leagues for a few seasons and have been very successful based on the feedback received from their families that participated in those programs. These House League programs are endorsed by Hockey Calgary for the Novice, Atom & Pee Wee levels. The South Calgary House Hockey League will consist of the following Hockey Associations: Bow Valley Hockey Society Blackfoot Hockey Association Lake Bonavista Hockey Association Midnapore Hockey Association Southwest Hockey Association We hope to attract some of our current community players, new members and attract back, some players who may like to play in a less demanding program; in a sport they love. What Age Categories will this program be offered to? The SCHHL will be offered to Novice, Atom and Pee Wee aged players. Program Dates October 5, 2015 January 30, 2016 No games will take place on the following long weekends: October 10, 2015 October 12, 2015 (Thanksgiving weekend) December 25, 2015 December 27, 2015 (Holiday Break) Program Scheduling Novice Teams: Home & Away games will take place: o On Saturdays or Sundays. o In the SE Quadrant of Calgary. o Between 8:00am 8:00pm. Practices will take place: o Between Tuesday and Thursday evenings. o Within 4:00pm 8:00pm. o Each Association will setup practices times based on their respective Associations ice availability.
Atom Teams: South Calgary House Hockey League Home & Away games will take place: o On Saturdays or Sundays o In the SE Quadrant of Calgary o Between 8:00am 8:00pm Practices will take place: o Between Tuesday and Thursday evenings o Within 4:00pm 8:45pm o Each Association will set up practices based on their respective Associations ice availability. Pee Wee Teams: Home & Away games will take place: o On Saturdays or Sundays o In the SE Quadrant of Calgary o Between 8:00am 8:00pm Practices will take place: o Between Tuesday and Thursday evenings o Within 4:00pm 8:45pm o Each Association will set up practices based on their respective Associations ice availability. Each Hockey Calgary SCHHL Team will receive 14 games & 14 practices throughout the season. **All games will be 1 hour in length** Program Details The SCHHL will be offered in addition to the traditional Minor Hockey Novice, Atom and Pee Wee Leagues. These House Leagues are OPTIONAL Leagues and are separate from the Minor Hockey in Calgary. Some of the highlights of the program include: All SCHHL teams will be sanctioned by Hockey Calgary and all players, coaches and teams will be properly registered within their home Association and Hockey Calgary. House League games will only be against other SCHHL teams. All games will follow the Hockey Calgary Playing Rules & Regulations and will be officiated by registered Community Officials. Score will be kept during each game, but League standings will not be kept throughout the season. Attempts will be made to balance each team and there will be no ranking of House Teams. There may be limited player evaluations at the beginning which will be required to balance the House teams. House League teams are not permitted to affiliate players to the Community Stream. There will not be any Playoffs, Exhibition or Tournament games. Teams will not be permitted to purchase any additional practice or game ice.
Program Registration Hockey fees for the House League will be lower than the Minor Hockey fees; mainly due to the different ice requirements and registration fees required between the different streams. Novice - $650 Atom - $650 Pee Wee - $650 You will need to follow all of your home Associations Registration processes; such as, but not limited to: Parent Respect in Sport Proof of Age Proof of Residency Registration Fees will be payable to your home Association, based on their payment options. Team Pictures will also be included in the cost of registration. Registration will be based on a first come first served basis. All interested players are to register through their home Association and if the program fills, a waitlist will be formed by each Association. Then depending on the length of the waitlist, the players may be offered the opportunity to play for another Association within the SCHHL for the current season. Equipment Required Full equipment is required at all times (including a practice jerseys); as per Hockey Calgary guidelines. Each Team will wear their respective Associations jersey and game socks will also be provided by each Association. Goalie gear for the Novice Age Category teams will be provided by the team s home Association. Note: A Jersey Deposit Cheque may be required by your home Associations. Coaching All interested Coaches will need to follow the procedure to register to coach, as set by your home Association. All Association & Hockey Calgary qualifications will be the same as mainstream hockey; with the exception that Atom Coaches may not need the Checking course.
Program FAQ s South Calgary House Hockey League Who Should Consider Registering for the House Leagues? o All Southwest Hockey Association; Atom, Novice and Pee Wee aged players are eligible to register for the SCHHL. o This is an optional program. Families have a choice between the House League and the traditional Minor Hockey league. Space is limited. Will there be Fundraising on House League Teams? o Each Association will set guidelines as to the amount of fundraising that will be permitted for each House League Team. o This may mean a limitation to the type of fundraising, or no fundraising at all. Will Cash Calls be required on the House League Team? o Each Association will set guidelines as to the amount of the cash calls; that will be permitted by each House League Team. o Cash Calls will be limited only to only allow the purchasing of Association apparel & team building events. o Cash call requirements will be significantly less for House teams compared to Minor Hockey teams. Are we required to participate in any of the Associations Major Fundraising Events? o Supporting Association Fundraising Events allows Associations to develop their programs and help keep registration fees reasonable. Any required involvement will be at the discretion of your home Association. Are we still required to Volunteer & is there a Volunteer Bond? o Yes. Volunteers will be required by each team, such as: Coaches, Team Managers, Team Treasurer o The Volunteer Bond will be determined by each home Association. Refer to your home Association Registration Information. Note: If your home Association has maxed out on the registrations and you choose to transfer to another SCHHL Association team, you will be expected to participate in that Association Volunteer Bond Program. Where will the schedule be posted? o Schedules will be posted on the Hockey Calgary and local Minor Hockey Association websites. Will the schedule be set for the season? o Yes. Once the Association has secured all ice contracts for the season, the games and practices will be scheduled according to the Program Scheduling noted above. o Once the ice availability has been reviewed, every effort will be made to have set practice schedules each week for the duration of the House League season.
How many teams are in the House League? o There will be a minimum of ten (10) teams formed in each Age Category amongst all the Association in the SCHHL. This means a minimum of two (2) teams in each Age Category; Novice, Atom & Pee Wee; per SCHHL Association. How many players are on each team? o Novice teams will consist of 16 skaters o Atom teams will consist of 15 skaters and 1 or 2 goalies o Pee Wee teams will consist of 15 skaters and 1 or 2 goalies Are there a minimum number of players required for the House League? o In order for our House League to go forward, we require a minimum of: 32 Novice players 30 Atom Players & 2 Goalies 30 Pee Wee Players & 2 Goalies o Note: **We do reserve the right to cancel this House League if we do not meet this minimum registration requirement. Players impacted will be able to change their registration accordingly** Are there space restrictions in the House League? o Yes. Space is limited for the House League to the registration numbers noted above. o If Associations have a waitlist, then those players may be sent to the other Associations within the SCHHL that are short players. Tentative date to determine this is July 30 th. Can we participate in Exhibition games and Tournaments, etc? o No. House League teams will not be permitted to play in any Exhibition games or Tournaments (inside or outside of Calgary).Nor will they be permitted to pick up any additional ice throughout the season. Will there be Playoffs? o No. House League teams do not participate in Playoffs. Will there be any sort of Final game? o Yes. During their final game, the following may be planned: Singing of O Canada with Player Introductions at the start of the game. Ice time will be 1.25 hours in length Players will receive Medals after their last game, and we will try to present the medals on ice; if possible. Each Association may cover the cost of medals; up to $500.
My son/daughter is a goalie. Can they also participate as a player? o For the Atom and Pee Wee Age Categories: Goalies will either split each game, or they will take turns in net, allowing them to play out for the games that they are not in net. This will be decided once teams have been formed. Can I request my son/daughter play with their friend? o Yes. Friend request will be accommodated by each Association and teams will consist of a mix of skill level. o Associations will ensure each of their teams will be equal in skill set Will standings be kept? o Score will be kept during each game, but League standings will not be kept throughout the season. Will Coaches be provided & do they require Certification? o Yes. Each team will be assigned volunteer Coaches; like any other Hockey Calgary Community Team. o Coach Application information will be posted to the website. o All Coaches will have to be certified as per the Hockey Alberta/Hockey Calgary Rules & Regulations, except that Atom Coaches do not need the Checking course. Respect in Sport, Coach and Safety are all still required as well as Police Checks. o Coaching development for both House and Minor Hockey teams will be the same. Will Goalie gear be provided? o Yes. Associations will provide Goalie Gear for the Novice Age Category only. How do I register? o You would register through your home Association Registration system. o Once logged in, you can make your selection for the House League or Minor Hockey League. o Players are only able to participate in one (1) League for the current hockey season. o Players may change Leagues between seasons only.
